It is a very old breed.
Chinese Temples still have centuries-old pottery, paintings and tapestries picturing the Japanese Chin. In the old days, this little dog were privileged pets belonging to the nobles of oriental courts. Once you get to know a Japanese Chin you will see what seems to be an inherent humor and old-world supreme courtliness attained from their original masters.

Perry was presented with a pair of Japanese Chin. He gave his pair of Chins to Queen Victoria of England. Later, several Japanese Chin found their way to the United States.
Mrs. James S. Hoffman was one of the leading breeders in the United States during the 1800's. She was an avid fancier often writing about how the Japanese Chin was the perfect companion.
The Japanese Chin or Spaniel is a sturdy little dog who is able to thrive well in all types of weather and climates. Their personality is one that will never forget a true friend and will grieve themselves to death when faced with loss of their true human friends. They will do anything or sacrifice anything for the people they love. They are loveable, loyal and obedient to all members of their family. They make perfect companions for children. They give all members of the family attention and are never a nuisance to visitors.
We see a lot of black and white Chin's, however, they come in red and white as well.
Being easy whelpers, they have a natural maternal instinct making them the perfect mothers to their babies.
They are smart and are a breed who loves the attention of being dressed up. They love being little actors and actresses for their human companions, and for this reason are a beloved pet for little girls in particular.
