Once conceived, it is possible for a matron to "withdraw" her pregnancy by either a spontaneous abortion or absorption of the fetuses during the early stage of development. Females can also show all the signs of pregnancy and it actually be a "false pregnancy." I had a dog one time who would scratch and act as if she was about to deliver (when other girls were delivering). I would go along with her and place her in a whelping box. She would even "fake having contractions" or perhaps she thought she was having contractions. In a few weeks she would act as if it was all over and the puppies were weaned, but she wouldn't leave her whelping box the entire time "she thought" she was having puppies, which sometimes was as much as 2 months acting as if she was having puppies and I would just go along with her as if she was until she decided to stop the act. This same dog even took over another girl's puppies and nursed them, but never produced puppies herself. She had milk but never any puppies. It was the oddest thing. I suppose she absorbed or lost her litters, but could produce milk and nurse other girl's puppies. She didn't want to just help. If she could take over an entire litter, she would do so.
In most cases, however, pregnancy does occur when bred, and goes along quite normally.
The pregnant matron requires a higher volume of food intake. As she progresses toward the end of her pregnancy term, she will usually demand to eat more and more. The quality of the food given to a dog during pregnancy is much more critical than at any other time in her life. You must use the highest quality of dog food you can find. Feed Life's Abundance canned foods after whelping for a few days and then add the canned over top dry Life's Abundance food to give the mother extra pampering for the duration of the time she raises her puppies.
Do not allow your pregnant dog to become overweight. Overweight matrons may have more difficulty delivering puppies. Do try to exercise your pregnant dog. If she is reluctant to run and play on her own during this time, take time to walk her on a leash. Exercise can help her to maintain energy and good muscle tone during whelping.
Inertia (just plain shutting down from fatique) is one of the greatest cause of still born puppies. Moderate exercise during pregnancy is very important.
As long as your pregnant Shih Tzu's appetite is good, don't be alarmed if she does become a little depressed or withdrawn. Most usually the behaviors are from hormonal changes rather than something going wrong with her or the pregnancy.
