The English Springer Spaniel is Friendly, Playful and Hardworking

• The English Springer is one of the gun dogs in the Spaniel family. His traditional purpose or role in our life is for flushing and retrieving game. They originated in Norfolk around the 19th century. You can expect he or she to live 12 to 14 years.

Skills:

An English Springer Spaniel is foremost an upland flushing dog. There are a number of skills that owners train the dog to perform for their role or purpose in our life. They include:

1. Retrieving to hand
2. Soft Mouth: Can be taught to deliver game with a soft mouth, meaning the dog will not puncture the catch with its teeth.
3. Quarter: This pattern is one of the primary criteria used to judge the dog in a field trial
4. Scenting: Ability  to scent game is of utmost important to the hunter. The dog should have a good nose in both wet and dry conditions.
5. Flushing: Springers should have a positive flush. It should not hesitate or point when encountering game.
6. Hup: This is the traditional command to sit and stay.
7. Follow hand signals: The dog must be responsive to hand signals in order for the hunter to be able to direct the dog into areas of particular interest.
8. Steady: The dog should be steady to wing and shot when hunting upland birds.
9. Blind retrieve: Adequately trained, the trained and experienced dog can be expected to use all of the above attributes to be conducted by hand, whistle and command to a position whereby an  unmarked lost game bird can be picked and retrieved to hand.

The English Setter is part of the Setter family of dogs which includes the red Irish Setter, White Setters and black and tan Gordon Setters. The English Setter's standard temperament is best described as a "Gentleman by Nature," although as mentioned above they can be strong-willed and mischievous especially if coming working/field breeding lines. They are energetic, people-oriented dogs will suited to family life that intends to give them lots of attention and activity. They are said to be particularly happy with children. English Setters are said to be very intelligent and can be trained to do just about any task another breed can do with the exception of "herding."
