Dog Grooming Behavior Modification Tips

Does your dog  wiggle and squirm, back off and fight you what seems every bit of the way when you try to groom him or her?

It is also true that some dogs never do get to like or learn to like grooming sessions. These dogs will require extra patience and most likely extra work on your part to actually get them groomed.



Some dogs will try every trick they can think of to hamper your progress. Some of my Shih Tzu will purposely lay their heads on the table while I “try” to pluck the hair from their ears hiding the ear I am trying to work on.

Dogs are quite intelligent. They can use this intelligence against you when it comes to grooming time. I think it is a rare dog, however, that does not eventually come around and be cooperative. You have to make them think it is “special time just for them and you.” Dog love anything that seems to be out of the way special treatment just for them.

Be gentle!

Be even gentler in sensitive areas such as the groin, the feet, under the tail, around the eyes. Even the sweetest and calmest of dogs will flinch a little in these areas. Most dogs allow a groomer to be pretty brisk on the body, and chest, but such enthusiasm in the tender regions can resemble more “torture” than special treatment, and the dog will gladly let you know they consider it to be torture!

If the dog is a long haired breed you will be so much better off getting him or her use to grooming as a puppy, the very day you bring your  puppy home should be the first day of grooming as well.

Grooming your dog will probably never seem easy, but it can become a very gratifying experience for both the dog and its owner. Show your dog you take pride in his appearance. Most dogs definitely appreciates this interest, gentleness and attention, which will result in a closer communication and relationship between you and your dog. Before a bath, put a drop of or two of mineral oil in your dog's eyes to prevent burning from soap suds, although you will always need to use a tearless shampoo for the face and around the eyes, a few drops of mineral oil also says to the dog that you are taking extra care of him or her. Tip #4

Start at the withers of your dog with the water hose or device that delivers water to your dog for the bath. Let a little warm water run in the sink around his feet first, and then work from the withers backwards to the end of the tail. Soak the dog's head the very last. This technique provides for the dog staying warmer and less restless if he gets the feel of the water on his body before having the stream of water directed over his face and eyes. They sometimes get startled at the point of water reaching their eyes. It is good, however, to rinse the eyes with a stream of water during the bath.

Early Puppy Eye Development

The average puppy’s eyes open between 12 and 15 days of age. The ear canals open soon thereafter, usually within a day or two. All puppies are born with their eyes and ears sealed shut. Do not try to open them. If you force or pry open the puppy’s eyelids during any development stage, you can cause the puppy irreversible injury. Puppies are unable to see or hear before this time. Puppies are receptive to the stimuli of light and dark, noise and quiet. Puppies will open their eyes before 12 days; some are even later than the 15 days.

If all but one or two puppies have their eyes open and functioning well, check with your veterinarian about the slower developing puppies. A brood matron’s eggs become fertilized during the breeding process at different times due to multiple insemination. Some puppies that develop later may be just simply because they were conceived at a later time.

Keep the puppy area under subdued lighting conditions during the eye-opening period. Use heat lamps with caution once puppies’ eyes have begun to open. If you need to continue using a heat lamp, construct a large aluminum foil “basket” or “hood” around the light. Punch numerous tiny holes in the fabric with a pin, thin, sharp pen or pencil tip.

Check the puppy’s eyes as they first open to see if the ear ducts are functioning properly. Wash the eyes and keep them moist with a warm washcloth. The glands do not always initially function adequately. Well-functioning tear ducts are indicated by glistening bright “reflective” eyes.

Sometimes if the puppy’s eyes open early or if the puppy is premature they do not have fully developed and functioning tears ducts. In these cases apply an ophthalmic ointment just under the eyelid, or consult with your vet for an appropriate routine to follow. If you use the ointment, apply it five or six times daily or according to your vet’s instructions. It is important to treat unproductive tear duct glands. Blindness can result if left unattended. Treatment is usually only a few days. A sterile 5 percent boric ophthalmic ointment solution can be purchased from your vet or pharmacy (under your vet’s instructions). The ointment can be applied every four hours. Treatment should continue until the Shih Tzu puppy’s eyes lose the dry “flat” (non-reflective) appearance.

Puppies’ eyes when first opened will have a protective film, bluish in color. If the puppy’s eyes are white or solid blue consult your veterinarian.

By three weeks of age, puppies’ should be able to focus fairly well.

Use extreme caution when photographing puppies between 8 and 20 days of age. Prior and after this time a flash may be safer. Extreme and bright light can damage a Shih Tzu puppy’s delicate eye tissues.

Learn to Tube Feed Puppies

It is not difficult to learn the correct tube feeding procedure. Purchase the tube feeder through your veterinarian, who will be able to equip you with the correct diameter catheter and syringe size for your puppy. Sterilize both catheter and syringe between early feedings. The syringe will have graduated markings on the side to record accurate intake. You will need a bowl or large measuring cup for warm water, a candy thermometer and a nontoxic indelible pen or dull knife.

1. Place water heated to 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the bowl or measuring cup.

2. Heat the formula separately (also to 100 degrees Fahrenheit) using the candy thermometer to regulate the temperatures of both liquids.

3. Put the thermometer, syringe, catheter and warmed formula into the bowl of water for transport to the puppy.

Each puppy should be measured for feeding. Correct measurement is crucial to the puppy’s well-being.

1. Lay each puppy flat on it side on a towel.

2. Measure the catheter from the rounded tip held at a point just behind the puppy’s last rib, along the side of the chest and throat, to just in front of the  puppy’s muzzle.

3. Mark the spot of the puppy’s muzzle on the catheter with the pen or dull knife.

If you get the catheter too short, the formula may be aspirated by the puppy. If you introduce a catheter too long it can puncture through the newborn puppy's delicate stomach wall. Have your vet walk you through the procedure.

If the end of the catheter is too wide to allow attachment to the syringe, sever the catheter directly behind the beginning of the flute to allow secure attachment to the syringe. Now that you have the syringe attached, place the catheter end into the warmed formula and withdraw the syringe from the plunger. Fill the syringe a few milliliters over the amount directed by your vet. Keep the catheter tip pointed downward, preventing air from getting in.

1. Place the puppy on a towel in your lap, head elevated in a slightly inclined position. Wrap one hand around the back of the puppy’s head, palm against the back of the skull.

2. Stroke the puppy with your thumb and opposing fingers on each side of the muzzle by the lip corners. The puppy should respond by opening its mouth.

3. Always keep the syringe elevated and the catheter end pointing downward.

4. You want very small amounts of formula to slowly drip from the catheter’s tip, preventing air from getting in.

5. Directly and gently introduce the tube through the front of the  puppy’s mouth. Never force a catheter down a puppy’s throat. Never insert at an angle.

6. The  puppy may at first struggle at the catheter’s introduction. Do not push if the catheter does not slip easily down the esophagus. Withdraw the catheter and try again. If the puppy struggles against the introduction of the catheter, gently apply a small amount of steady pressure to the catheter against the puppy’s resistance; the puppy should reflexively swallow. The passage should suddenly open and the tube should slide down easily.

7. The catheter is in correct position when the mark you made is just slightly beyond the tip of the puppy’s muzzle.

8. Slowly depress the syringe plunger to begin feeding.

9. Never feed a  puppy until its abdomen is distended and hard. If the  puppy’s stomach remains flaccid, you have not fed enough. Feed half the formula, and then burp the puppy.

10. Be sure to have your vet walk you through the correct procedure for tube feeding before you try this yourself.

Learning to Recognize Canine Aggressive Behaviors

Any breed of dog can exhibit aggressive behaviors. Do you understand what it means if a dog bares its teeth at you? Is your dog warning you to back off or is your dog simply smiling? If your dog suddenly snaps at you – is this a failed bite or a warning that a bite might be coming next? The truth is these are typically aggressive behaviors that can range from visual warnings to postural or symbolic threats. Every dog owner needs to learn these subtle or not so subtle warnings of aggression, whether it be with a Shih Tzu or a Pit Bull. Any dog breed can exhibit aggression.

Dog aggression is often meant primarily not to harm so much as to alter the behavior of another creature, human or animal. Dogs communicate their aggressive intentions through changes in expression, posturing, and maneuvering, some so subtle as to be easily missed or misunderstood by a passerby or even the owner. A dog’s communication system is quite different from a human’s communication system. It is important that every dog owner, whether it be a Shih Tzu or a Pit Bull, or a tiny teacup poodle, learn the dog’s basic communication system expressing aggression.

The actual bite is often preceded by several aggressive responses and warnings. These might include staring, growling, tensing up, and walking stiffly. No one, however, would misinterpret the savage attack of a child by a Pit Bull, as anything other than pure aggression and most people would also interpret the attack as the dog being absolutely uncontrollably vicious. In a breed such as the Shih Tzu, one does not normally see such types of viciousness, however, as with all canines, it is possible. All canines are related to the wolf and even though humans have domesticated them extremely well they can still from time to time exhibit those wolf like behaviors.

Aggression may develop gradually in a pup as it matures. Play growling and nipping by puppies  may seem harmless, but they often represent warning signals of what can be possible later on. Growling and nipping in puppies needs to be handled immediately and eradicated. The mouth of a puppy should never be allowed on human skin regardless of the activity. One possible way of handling a mouthing puppy on human skin is to immediately close the mouth of the puppy and hold it tight while saying sternly to the puppy – NO BITE.

All puppies are prone to want to chew. They are teething and this is a very normal behavior, however, when it is transferred to human skin, it is not normal and not acceptable. It can be solved if caught in the early stages assuming there are no other emotional problems occurring with the puppy. You can also quickly put a chewable object in the mouth of the mouthing  puppy.

I suggest using tasty and nutritious chew treats to substitute for mouthing behavior or to place in the puppy's mouth when they exhibit mouthing or biting behaviors. The Mysterious and Charismatic Shih Tzu Companion

What sets the Shih Tzu apart from other breeds? The Shih Tzu is mysterious and charismatic. Its charm, self confidence and alert countenance is certainly very alluring. The Shih Tzu is highly intelligent. The Shih Tzu’s outgoing personality, big eyes with that warm and trusting expression is so hard to resist. Is a Shih Tzu going to be the right dog for you?

First of all, the Shih Tzu want to be with their people more than anything else in their lives. They do not do well in lonely kennels or when left alone for long periods of time. They have been bred for centuries to be a quintessential companion, always at your side, always in your presence craving love and attention.

If you sit down, your companion will want to immediately sit with you or an even better spot in the Shih Tzu’s mind, would be to jump into your lap and lavish you with kisses. He or she will want you to pet and snuggle him.

If you are eating, your Shih Tzu will either beg you for a bite or sit waiting patiently until you give him a bite. In essence, if you want a constant loving companion by your side at all times, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you.

Shih Tzu are usually active, busy, curious and creative. You will need a variety of toys to help keep the his or her mind occupied. You will need a fenced-in yard or an area where you are able to walk your Shih Tzu for exercise.

Shih Tzu are very good natured, but also very vivacious. Shih Tzu have a good sense of humor and would rather clown around than to be serious. Always keep in mind that Shih Tzu were bred to be ornamental or decorative pieces to have around, not for any particular work purpose. A Shih Tzu thinks just their presence is enough and anyone should be pleased to just be in their presence. They are proud and arrogant with a slight stubborn streak. A Shih Tzu has a mind of its own.

The Shih Tzu is a palace-dweller. For thousands of years the Shih Tzu had addresses in such places as imperial palaces, chez Dalai Lama, and with top political figures and dignitaries homes. It was a status symbol of wealth and dignity to own a Shih Tzu. To your small Shih Tzu companion, your safe and cozy home is its palace. Give your Shih Tzu a comfortable place to sleep (and I might add, the Shih Tzu discovers quite quickly that “your pillow” is the most comfortable spot to sleep), excellent care, high quality food and a loving family. Your Shih Tzu could not be happier. Although their stubborn streak may appear from time to time, the Shih Tzu can be trained quite successfully. Just use consistency and patience with your training lessons.

Types of Dog Aggression

In this article I will discuss 4 types of dog aggression that could be a warning sign to the owner that his Dog is in need of professional help.

Four types of dog aggression are:

1. Dominance Aggression Toward People
2. Interdog Dominance Aggression
3. Fear Aggression
4. Territorial Aggression

Dominance aggression toward people: Dominance is the driving force behind all canine aggression. Without dominance dogs would not be able to stand up for themselves. Even a Shih Tzu with a submissive type temperament will have a small amount of dominance behaviors, enough to warn intruders off a favorite food, toy or circumstance.

Protection of the dog's valued assets can be virtually the only sign of dominance. An aggressive response by a dominant dog may also occur when the dog is prevented from doing something it wants to do, in response to manipulations around the head and neck or when the dog is disciplined.

Different dogs have different priorities with regards to what will “tick them off.” Dominance aggression is also dependent upon the time, place and circumstance. Dominant dogs are not likely to become aggressive toward the person he perceives as his leader. Dominance aggression is the primary way dogs  establishes their hierarchical structure and relationships with each other. Therefore, some dominance aggression in dogs is to be expected.

Inter dog dominance aggression: This is a dog that constantly picks fights with other dogs. The subordinate dog defers to a dominant dog by averting his eyes; holding the head low, body hunkered down, tail tucked or held low, which is the canine equivalent of waving a white flag. Treatment of aggression between dogs is not easy. You can, however, keep your interdog dominant dog on lead when he is likely to be confronted with other dogs. Seek professional help if your dog continually exhibits this type of aggression.

Fear aggression: Fearful and insecure dogs may exhibit aggression whenever they feel threatened. Often there has been a point in these dogs’ lives when they were exposed to some unpleasant experience involving a person or another dog. Many dogs from rescues, pet shops or puppy mills may acquire fear aggression. A dog purchased from a reputable breeder and then mistreated by new owners can also acquire fear aggression. Fear aggression involving people are often men and children, and almost always strangers. Professional help is often needed for this type of dog and most often the cause for the fear aggression can be ascertained.

Territorial aggression:
Some dogs' aggressiveness to strangers and other dogs occurs when they are approached within their own space or territory. The territory can be the owner’s home and property. They will bark and otherwise attempt to intimidate intruders until such time as it is clear that the visitor is welcome by the owners.

One very positive side of dog aggression is that a good guard dog is better than any alarm system. A house with a dog is far less likely to get burglarized. Many times the house with the dog or dogs remains unmolested. Just having a dog with you as you walk is a deterrent for many would-be attackers.
