The Shih Tzu Dog Breed has had Many Nicknames

Several theories exist as to how the Shih Tzu was created. It has been reported that around the year 1650 the Dalai Lama visited China and brought along three “holy dogs” from Tibet. The Dalai Lama was believed to be a reincarnation of Buddha. Tibetan monks were devoted to breeding “holy dogs” to resemble their perception of lions. Based upon this theory, it is believed the three “holy dogs” were interbred with Pekingese to create shorter muzzles, broader heads, smaller dogs in general and is quite possibly the foundation of today’s Shih Tzu breed.

Shih-Tzu

Some people believe the Shih Tzu was created by crossing Lhasa Apsos with Pekingese. Another theory is that the Tibetan Spaniel was bred with the Pekingese to create predecessors of the Shih Tzu.

Others believe the Shih Tzu developed centuries ago in Tibet and reached China originally as a purebred. The answer to just how the Shih Tzu were created still eludes us today. Its origin is steeped in mysteries and legends. The Shih Tzu is generally the result of interbreeding original Tibetan “holy dogs” and various “lion dogs” in China. It is also generally accepted that the oldest and smallest of the “holy Dogs” are the ancestors of today’s Shih Tzu.

Through time the Shih Tzu has had many nicknames:

1.Lion Dog
2.Holy Dog
3.Fu Dog
4.Chrysanthemum-faced dog
5.Sleeve Dog
6.Under The Table Dog
7.Shih Tzu Kou
8.Lhasa Lion Dog
9.Lhasa Terrier
10.Tibetan Poodle
11.Shock Dog
12.Imperial Shih Tzu
13.Teacup Shih Tzu
14.Imperia/Teacup Shih Tzu
15.Standard Shih Tzu

After World War II, there were very few Shih Tzus in Europe. A few of the larger specimens reached the U.K. from China. Of these few larger size Shih Tzu, many had medical problems or died at an early age. The problems could have been caused by poor living conditions, insufficient food or food of low quality.Always feed a high quality food to your Shih Tzu. I recommend and have had good results with Life's Abundance.

Breeders began breeding as many of the remaining Shih Tzu as possible. They did not remove a Shih Tzu from the breeding program just because it wasn’t a perfect specimen of the breed, and at that time, who really knew what was a perfect specimen of the Shih Tzu anyway. The result of these breedings resulted in Shih Tzu much larger than was ever seen in the Chinese Imperial Palace during the days of the Empress Dowager. Eunuchs tried desperately to keep the very exquisite, small treasures of the Imperial Palace from reaching anyone outside the Palace. There were even instances where some Eunuchs fed the Shih Tzu glass just before releasing them to others outside the palace and then committed suicide themselves.

Despite all their efforts, however, Shih Tzu managed to survive. We are blessed today with these exquisite creatures, and regardless of what their nicknames have been or is now, the fact that we have Shih Tzu at all is quite a miracle.

What Exactly is a Shih Tzu?

The Shih Tzu has long been prized solely as a companion. The Shih Tzu’s temperament is of the utmost importance. It is the Shih Tzu’s unique head and expression that actually distinguishes the breed from two other related Oriental breeds, the Lhasa Apso and the Pekingese.

Shih-Tzu

Shih Tzu are alert, arrogant, full of playful antics, and affectionate. Dog show judging is based on how closely each Shih Tzu entered approaches the ideal picture described in the breed standard.

Much of the Shih Tzu breed standard is devoted to the head. A correct head and expression should be round, warm and soft. The head of a correct Shih Tzu is large and round when viewed from the side. The ears look like they blend in with the head. The Shih Tzu’s topknot should be placed fairly low on the forehead in a double band to keep the hair from falling forward into the Shih Tzu’s eyes.

The eyes of a Shih Tzu should be round, large and dark. A small amount of eye white is acceptable. Excessive eye white in the corners of the eye or around the entire eye detract from the desired warm, sweet expression. Lack of good dark pigmentation on the nose, lips or eye rims also distracts from the desired warm, sweet expression. The eyes should be placed well apart.

The muzzle is short, square and unwrinkled. This is unlike the longer, narrower muzzle of the Lhasa Apso or the extremely short, wrinkled muzzle of the Pekingese. The jaw is undershot, which means the lower jaw is longer than the upper jaw. The teeth should not show when the mouth is closed. The lower lip should not protrude when viewed from the side.

The Shih Tzu should move smoothly, flowingly and effortlessly. One common problem area in the Shih Tzu is poor fronts. Front and rear angulations should be in balance for smooth movement with a good front reach and a strong rear movement.

The Chinese said the Lion Dog should have dragon eyes, a lion head, a bear torso, a frog mouth, palm-leaf fan ears, a feather-duster tail and movement like a goldfish. Lion Dogs (Shih Tzu) appear not only in Chinese art, but also in the art of Tibet, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia.

The first imports of Shih Tzu to the United States came from England. These very early imports were noted to be “quite large.” In 1955, Shih Tzu were admitted by the AKC to the Miscellaneous Class (the breed is now in the Toy Group). At this time the Shih Tzu breed began to gain greater popularity. In 1998, 38,468 Shih Tzu were registered with the American Kennel Club, ranking the Shih Tzu eleventh of all registered breeds.

Famous owners of the Shih Tzu have been: Zsa Zsa Gabor, Yul Brynner, Elizabeth, Queen Consort of George VI.

Puppy Whelping Postpartum Care

Whelping a litter of  puppies can sometimes be physically and emotionally exhausting for both you and the  matron. Before you take your well deserved rest, be certain the matron and puppies are comfortable, each puppy has nursed well, the heat lamp is not too close, and the heating pad is not turned up too high. At this time it is crucial to maintain proper environmental temperatures. Newborn puppies are incapable of controlling their own body temperatures. Chilling to any degree leaves newborn puppies susceptible to infectious disease. Room temperature should be maintained at about 85 degrees Fahrenheit for at least their first few days.

Initially offer your dam only soft, messy-type foods and the wellness supplements from Life's Abundance. Use a high quality milk replacement added to her food. I like using Life's Abundance canned formulas with Just Born milk replacement powder sprinkled on top or mixed within.

Most  dams are ready for a good meal once whelping is over and the puppies are all settled in nursing well. However, do not worry if she refuses one or two feedings during her first 24 hours of motherhood. Do not expect her to leave her newborn puppies. If she is too exhausted to eat right after whelping, she will be ready by the next day most usually.

To prevent serious cleanup problems, place four interlocking layers of open newspaper on the floor over heavy plastic film such as that used by painters. Plastic sheeting covered by newspaper saves all flooring, is nonporous, makes any cleanup easy and is inexpensive to purchase.

Use Clorox bleach, ¾ cup to a gallon of water to disinfect the whelping box and immediate area. You will need to disinfect daily.

Two days following whelping, offer your matron soft food mixed with a high quality dog food. I use  Life’s Abundance and have found it to be the absolute best food and supplements.  Turkey and Shrimp with Broth is one good choice. Try them all to see which is your matron's favorite and give that one to her at this time.

Your dam should be seen by a veterinarian for a postpartum examination within 24 hours of whelping. It is not uncommon for a dam to retain one or more placentas, large amounts of blood and other body fluids in the uterus. It is also possible that she retained one or two puppies as well. All of these need to be expelled immediately. Retention will predispose the dam to infection. Many veterinarians will give the oxytocin shot within the first 24 hours of whelping to help her expel any retained fluids, placental material and/or puppies.

Puppy Difficult Wet Delivery

In this article I discuss some methods of helping during a difficult and/or wet puppy delivery.

While your matron is doing her part with the delivery, you can gently but firmly grip the puppy’s sac with the aid of a towel or diaper. Hold the puppy in a position of presentation to prevent it from being withdrawn back into the birth canal. Each time your  matron has a contraction the puppy is closer to birth. You, as a  mid-wife need only to hold the puppy to prevent withdrawal and allow Nature to work.

Sometimes it may be difficult to grip the puppy’s sac. If the head is definitely presented first, break open the sac from around the  puppy’s head. Immediately use a pediatric bulb syringe to suction amniotic fluid from the puppy’s mouth.

A difficult or large  puppy may require more than two or three contractions. In general, there should be no more than four contractions. If more than four contractions there may be a problem if the  puppy has not been whelped. You may need a professional vet’s assistance at this point.

A breech delivery puppy is presented rear-foremost. The hind legs are tucked against the puppy’s abdomen in the direction of the head. This presentation normally does not present a problem for the  puppy or the matron because the head of a puppy is larger in circumference than the body. Puppies are generally whelp freely and do not require professional assistance.

A breech delivery can be difficult to assist when a puppy is confined in the slippery sac. Surgical gloves are helpful for securely holding the slippery sac. Gauze pads make a second good choice. A thin towel is adequate as a third choice. If none of these items are available and you must work with your bare hands, use your fingers. Gently secure a grip on each side of the puppy without applying undue pressures. As each contraction occurs, apply a steady, firm pressure, preventing the puppy from slipping back inside the birth canal. Never pull!

I recommend giving matron "special" food after delivery. Try using one of the canned foods from Life's Abundance. Wait a little while also as she will have all that nature provides her for nourishment as she consumes each placenta from her baby. Some people think to NOT allow matron to eat the placenta is the best way to go. I disagree. I believe nature provides our animals with ways to nourish their body through the consuming of the placenta or after birth. This usually comes just after the puppy is born. It is full of nature's nourishment.

After she is settled in with her puppies and for a few days after the birth, offer her some canned food from Life's Abundance. She will appreciate the "special" food as a way of pampering her. You also need to give her the dry food as she wants it.

Pork and Venison is a good choice, however, use the flavor your matron likes best.

Routine Hygiene After Puppy Whelping

Your  matron will keep her whelping box clean the first few weeks. She will stimulate her puppies to eliminate and ingest their wastes. Newborn puppies are born incompletely developed. The matron must stimulate them to urinate and defecate or the puppies become toxic and die.

The whelping box still needs to be cleaned and disinfected daily. Use ¾ cup Clorox bleach to one gallon of water. Clorox bleach is highly effective against Parvo virus. Your  dam’s discharge must never be profuse, overly bright red, greenish or odorous. Should any of these conditions occur, call your veterinarian for advice.

Change the  whelping box linens daily the first week and twice daily thereafter. Do not allow the bedding to become damp. Chilling is fatal to newborn puppies. Bedding in the whelping box should be completely flat. Puppies can become lost under wrinkled bedding.

Newborn  puppy stools should be checked as they eliminate. A bright or strangely colored stool, yellowish streaked, foamy or mucous of consistency are signs of trouble. Hard stools accompanied by straining and crying or loose stools of a diarrhea condition are indicative of life-threatening conditions. Normal  puppy stool has form, is not overly hard, runny or mucous. It is brown and holds together in a soft but formed “rope.”

The only time a  matron should wear a collar is when you take her out the yard or to the vet. Remove the collar prior to whelping and throughout the time puppies are near their dam. Do not use flea collars when the dam is with her puppies.

Four interlocking layers of opened newspaper on the floor over heavy plastic film such as that used by painters are helpful in preventing serious cleanup problems. It is not necessary to discard plastic sheeting after each use. Clean with a solution of ¾ cup Clorox bleach and 1 gallon of water.

Caring for Unthrifty and Premature Puppies

If this is your matron’s first litter she may become nervous or even terrified. Your attitude at this time is very important. The manner in which a matron accepts or rejects her offspring is often in direct response to your attitude or even the whelping box site.

Normal puppies are plump and firm at birth. They have good muscle and skin tones. The skin on the abdomen, feet and mouth is pink. If  puppies cry continuously or constantly squirm and crawl, these are signs of infant distress. Well-nourished, healthy puppies are warm, quiet and sleep most of the time. They yawn at awakening. Do not excessively handle newborn  puppies. Do not allow others to handle newborn  puppies. Only the breeder or caretaker should handle newborn puppies. Excessive handling of more than one person increases the chance of transmission of infections to the newborns.

UN-thrifty Puppies

UN-thrifty  puppies have poor muscle tone. Obvious signs of discomfort are constant crying and initially high levels of activity. UN-thrifty puppies appear thinner than siblings and are limp to touch because of poor muscle and skin tones. UN-thrifty  puppies may feel cold to your touch or cooler than their siblings. The skin over the abdomen, feet and mouth interiors may appear reddish purple or paled when compared to other siblings.

An UN-thrifty  puppy is usually incapable of sustained nursing and readily loses nipple contact with the dam. They become easily chilled. Such UN-thrifty puppies may respond positively to a few milliliters of raw liver juice fed daily for their first few weeks. Supplementary tube or bottle feeding for three or four days every four hours around the clock may be necessary. If you notice a weak, UN-thrifty  puppy, remove it from the litter and maintain it in the puppy box. You can place the puppy back on the dam at regular intervals under your close supervision. This way the dam is able to stay in touch with the weak UN-thrifty puppy. She will stimulate elimination, clean and nurture them at this time. This regular periodic tactile time helps avoid failure-to-thrive syndrome. Many weak and UN-thrifty  puppies can be successfully saved.

Premature Puppies

The first 24 hours are critical to premature puppies. They must be maintained on an hourly schedule. The next 48 hours requires an every 2 hour schedule around the clock. The following 48 hours can be stretched to a 3-hour schedule around the clock. By the fifth day, premature puppies, can be changed to 4-hour intervals. At one week, the night feedings only can be set to a 6-hour schedule, resuming 4-hour intervals during the day. This is a highly intense schedule for a breeder or puppy mid-wife. It must be maintained until the premature  puppies are ready for their first semisolid foods at about 13 days of age and after their eyes have opened. Many premature puppies can be saved on this routine.

Saving Orphaned Puppies

If you want to save your orphaned puppies you must be totally dedicated to them on a 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week basis for the first few weeks of life. Raising orphaned puppies is the most challenging and taxing task any breeder could undertake. Success is gratifying.
New born pups

Maintain the puppies in an incubator environment with a temperature of at least 90 degrees Fahrenheit to start out. Reduce the temperature to 85 degrees after three or four successful days and you see the puppies are stable. Slowly decline the temperature by small increments. After a week the temperature can be slowly declined to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. Maintain this temperature until the  puppies are three to four weeks of age. After four weeks the temperature may be reduced to 75 degrees.

Orphaned puppies are prime candidates for failure-to-thrive syndrome. Under normal conditions, the  puppy is bumped and shoved instinctively with litter mates. These natural instincts insure that the  puppies use their body, pushing toward the dam for nursing, pushing in rivalry against litter mates. The dam vigorously washes her offspring, cleaning the puppies and bringing about elimination. This tactile stimulation is crucial to the development of a strong healthy puppy.

You must effect stimulation by gentle periodic stroking with one or two fingers, awakening the  puppies directly prior to feeding. During feeding periods it is necessary to snuggle the puppies to simulate the same type of nurturing the dam would have provided. You become a surrogate dam to orphaned  puppies.

Puppies are born with sealed eyes. The puppy is unable to hear at birth. You as the surrogate dam will need to artificially stimulate the orphaned puppy to defecate and urinate. You can do this easily by using a cotton swab dipped in baby oil. Gently swab the genitalia and anus area until the puppy urinates and defecates. The surrogate dam must stimulate puppies to elimination on the same regular basis as feeding intervals. The orphaned puppy must be stimulated to urinate and defecate at each feeding interval until able to independently perform these functions.

Consult with your vet as to which puppy milk formula you should use, and the type of feeding method.
