What the Shih Tzu Owner Should Know About Grooming Part 1

The show dog Shih Tzu owner who does not want to groom his Shih
Tzu himself should know what must be done and when. This
knowledge is necessary so he/she can take the Shih Tzu to a
professional groomer or handler for show grooming at the right
time.
Shihtzu (cropped)

All Shih Tzu owners should know several basic grooming
techniques. It is very important to use the right equipment.
There are many different types of brushes, combs, clipper blades
and other tools. If you use the wrong brush, brushing technique,
comb or clipper blade you can easily break Shih Tzu’s hair or
give the Shih Tzu brush burn.

I recommend using Life's Abundance Grooming products for the Shih Tzu. I will showcase one product in this article. Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo. You can take your preferred products to your personal groomer to use on your shih tzu.

Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo

  • Organic rosemary & sage
  • Natural kiwi & mango extracts
  • Cleans without stripping away natural oils
  • Moisture-activated odor eliminators
Pamper your precious pet with a revitalizing botanical infusion of organic rosemary and sage. Enhanced with the nourishing essences of coconut and palm kernel oil, Revitalizing Shampoo naturally cleanses and beautifies coats. Even a small dollop of this conditioning formula works into a luxurious, foamy lather, to deeply cleanse and leave coats silky, fragrant and tangle-free. The luscious scents of mango and kiwi mingle with energizing citrus notes to bring out natural shine. Natural antioxidants from organic rosemary and sage help prevent damage from weathering and environmental factors. Natural emollients help soften hair and give the coat more body.

Revitalizing Shampoo doesn’t just mask odors … moisture activated odor-fighters react immediately to absorb and neutralize tough pet odors. All that’s left after a bath is a beautiful coat, fragrant with a delicate citrus aroma. Gentle enough for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age. Item Size: 12 fl. oz.

Some knowledge of anatomy is useful. You will need to maintain
proper control of the Shih Tzu while grooming. Control points
are used to alert the Shih Tzu to what the groomer wants him to
do. Shih Tzu puppies are especially important for the groomer to
control properly while grooming. Take care not to frighten the
Shih Tzu during early grooming sessions. The grooming sessions
should be fun for both the Shih Tzu puppy and the owner.

Introduce your new Shih Tzu puppy to grooming as soon as you
bring him home. At the young age of 8 weeks Shih Tzu puppies
usually learn proper grooming manners quickly if they are
handled properly.

Aspects of grooming that contribute to a Shih Tzu’s good health:

1. To prevent ear infection keep the Shih Tzu’s ears clean of
hair.

2. Remove excess wax promptly. This can be done with a piece of
cotton that has been dipped in alcohol.

3. Be careful not to pry deep in the ear or stick anything small
into the ear. If there is reason to do so, the Shih Tzu should
be taken to a veterinarian.

4. Keep toenails trimmed and filed. This helps the Shih Tzu to
walk easier and more comfortable as well as keeps him from
snagging furniture or scratching owner’s legs and arms.

5. Anal glands should be expressed to avoid discomfort to the
dog by your veterinarian if you groom your Shih Tzu at home. The
professional groomer can do this if you have your Shih Tzu
professionally groomed.

6. All Shih Tzu owners should have some knowledge of ticks,
fleas, and lice and know what to do if the Shih Tzu becomes
infested with any of these parasites.

Shih Tzu can very easily be groomed completely at home if you
learn some basic grooming techniques, use the right equipment and grooming products,
and have some knowledge of anatomy of your Shih Tzu.

Tips to Keep Your Dogs Happy on Cold Winter Days

Cold weather is coming for many of us. This means many households, dogs, and people will be spending more time indoors to stay out of the bitter cold. Of course, there are always some dogs who actually love the cold weather, the ice, the snow and this time of year becomes more their playground than the warmer months. However, this is not the case for many of us. Since you won't be able to keep your dog happy watching the latest movies on Netflix, let us explore some simple ways to fight dog boredom while you watch the latest movies on Netflix.

Watch the video below from Life's Abundance Dr. Sarah, an on staff vet, to learn a few tips on how to  keep your dogs from getting bored. Let us face it, we all get bored, and we need ways to relieve the boredom. Dogs are no different.

The Carolina Dog Breed is Possibly One of the Ancient Free-Ranging Dogs of the United States

Normal roaming grounds for the free-ranging dogs were from the Southeast through the desert Southwest in ancient times. Studies show behavior and ecology suggest a close ancestry with a possible descent with the Carolina Dog Breed of today. The ancient free ranging dogs accompanied man across the Bering land bridge into North America some 10,000 to 14,000 years ago. Just imagine man (most likely native Americans)crossing over these lands and these dogs appearing to accompany them. I notice on the old westerns, they would often put dogs in their episodes that resemble these dogs. Sometimes they will be crossing over the lands, other times might just be in the middle of town where their saloons and other business were.

Dakota, the Dixie Dingo (or Carolina Dog)

Their personality is generally shy and suspicious. Once these dogs accepts a human into their pack the shyness and suspicion disappears toward that human. The Carolina Dogs are said to be easily trained and eager to please. They are assigned to the Hound Group in the American Kennel Club registry. I imagine they probably have some kind of special "howling" noise they make, but I am unsure about this. I can imagine them sitting way up high on a mountain with their heads up in the air and making that howling noise that perhaps only their human companions or other in their pack would understand.

An interesting fact about the Carolina dogs is that they dig snout pits. These are small, conical depressions in the dirt that fit the dog's muzzle exactly. Females are the ones who do most of the digging of snout pits between September and January. I suppose the males are welcome in the pits when a female is not using them or perhaps the females go around digging multiple pits for anyone in their pack to enjoy. (source: American Kennel Club)

Another fascinating story about the Carolina dog's ancestors is that they perhaps came from the feral wild dogs in the Southeastern United States were domesticated in ancient times by Paleolithic Native American peoples. It is believed the Carolina Dogs possibly lived in the wild for thousands of years with some being periodically re-domesticated or semi-domesticated by Native American peoples.

Another unique trait of the Carolina Dog from studies by Dr. I. Lehr Brisbin, Jr. show in the wild they defecated and urinated in streams, creeks and other bodies of water suggesting long-term adaptation to the wild via the behavior of hiding their scent in water in order to evade wolves and coyotes who are known to kill dogs. I think this is absolutely fascinating information. Who, but the creator of this animal, could have taught them ways to protect themselves from hungry wolves and coyotes. We think we got troubles in this day and time with different things, but just think of how the people in these ancient lands had to deal with wolves and coyotes busting through their doors and windows!

Do you have anyone on your gift list in which just has everything and you cannot think of one thing to buy for them? If they have pets, I suggest giving them Life's Abundance Gift Certificates.

Loud Noises: We all know how loud celebrating, happy or joyous children and adults can be on holidays. Be aware that your pet kid may react with anxiety around small children or the loud noises.

Pet Costume Safety: This is becoming more important as more people get in on the fun with dressing up their pet kids for holidays. Be sure the costume does not restrict the pet's movement, his or her breathing, hearing, making noise or eliminating. Try the costume on at least the night before your pet kid will be wearing it for celebration just to see how your dog or cat responds to it.

In the following video Dr. Sarah, an on staff vet at Life's Abundance goes over many more pet safety tips for Halloween celebrations.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgis is a Powerful Little Worker

They are long in body, short on legs, built with sturdy bones and have a deep chest. The Cardigan Welsh Corgis moves powerfully with speed and grace. Weight is anywhere from 25 to 34 pounds, and as most dog breeds, the females will be a little smaller. A popular coat color is the blue-merle pattern, however, they come in several colors ranging from red (see photo below) to the blue-merle pattern. Cardigans have tails whereas the Pembrokes who look very similar do not have tails.

Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Profile

They are loyal, affectionate and smart, very even-tempered and never shy. Energy level is very active, they are rugged herders with a great love for the outdoors. If you too love the outdoors, the Cardigan Welsh Corgis dog breed may be just the perfect dog breed for you.

Photo Credit: By Dhlstrm, CC BY-SA 3.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=1988768

They thrive on mental and physical activity. They are said to be good with children, but better with supervision. They are good with other dogs with supervision. Shedding is seasonal. Grooming chores will be occasional. They respond well to appropriate training techniques. They stand 10.5 to 12.5 inches high. You can expect your Cardigan Welsh Corgis to live 12 to 15 years. Of course, what you feed him or her will either help the dog to live longer or less. This dog breed barks when necessary.

The Cardigan Welsh Corgi originated in the British Isles. They first came to the Cardiganshire (actual place of origin) with the Celts while they migrated to Wales in 1200 BC. His purpose was to nip the heels of cattle and drive them which cleared his owner's ground of neighboring cattle before fences were used. This was an interesting first job for this dog breed! Today, of course, he can dwell happily with you as a pet companion. (source: American Kennel Club)

It is wise to feed any dog the Life's Abundance Wellness Food Supplement:

  • Helps maintain overall health
  • Naturally nutritious ingredients from whole foods
  • The perfect complement to our premium foods
  • Made in USA
Supplementing your dog’s diet can play a crucial role in maintaining overall health. We know that some dogs require additional nutritional intake to help them maintain a healthy body, due to age, breed, environment and other factors. Based on this premise, our holistic veterinarian has formulated the perfect complement to your dog’s daily diet. Life’s Abundance Wellness Food Supplement for Dogs is formulated with a broad array of naturally nutritious ingredients from real food to help maintain overall health. The nutrients contained in this superior supplement are sourced from foods, chicken liver, cranberries, carrots, eggs, pineapples and many others.

“The more we learn about the way bodies function, the more amazing they seem to us. There is a growing amount of anecdotal evidence that suggests a mammal’s body has a highly complex, natural intelligence. As a holistic veterinarian, I review such evidence, interpreting it within the context of established scientific knowledge. Based upon these observations, it seems that a dog’s body “prefers” nutrients as they exist in real foods, in their more natural state. On a cellular level, their bodies are familiar with the nutrient components and therefore the body knows to absorb and assimilate exactly what it needs. That is why I believe that small amounts of nutrients in real foods can have a profound affect on a dog’s body. In light of this information, I formulated a new approach to add to the overall nutrient intake, creating Life’s Abundance Wellness Food Supplement for Dogs.”

Help Fearful or Aggressive Dogs Using Desensitization and Counter Conditioning Techniques

Desensitization is a process used to change the dog's behavior where the dog slowly learns not to react emotionally to something whether it is a person, place or thing. Counter Conditioning works to teach the dog to trade fear and aggression for a more desirable behavior. Training works best when the dog is hungry. Provide your dog with Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats. Notice the way this beautiful poodle is sitting still. Most likely, this behavior was accomplished by successful training and did not just happen on it's own. Who knows? Before this picture was taken, the poodle could have had a fearful or aggressive reaction to a person, place or thing, but is now calmly sitting. Any owner can achieve positive results using these techniques.

Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats were made especially for positive reinforcement and work perfectly with this training program.

At Life's Abundance we believe good behavior needs to be rewarded. Each time you reward your dog for the desired behavior, the dog associates the good behavior with the reward, thus, reinforcing the good behavior and getting rid of the bad behaviors you want rid of.

Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.

Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised chicken and lamb.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors..

With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

This type of training works with any breed of Dog. Isn't this Maltese just beautiful? Look at that face, almost like a human expression. Most of our pets do NOT automatically do what we would like them to do. There are exceptions to this rule of course, but most of the time, we as owners have to "train and teach" the accepted behaviors. Just imagine for a moment this same Maltese fearful of a person, place or thing just before this beautiful photo was snapped, but because of positive training techniques, is now resting beautifully and is picture perfect!
