You Can Feed Your Dogs Bread With Caution: There Are Risks

How many times have you seen dogs eat sandwiches, slices of bread and even whole loaves of breads. These meals of bread usually go down fast! I have seen many photos of dogs eating bread and sandwiches. I can't recall seeing a photo of a dog eating an entire loaf of bread, but I am sure it happens.

Bread is usually in every human's cabinets or refrigerator. We love sandwiches of all kinds. The delicious middle part usually ends up with at least one slice of bread on both ends. Guess what? Our dogs love them too!

Is it safe for dogs to eat bread?

The answer is "yes" and "no."

Bread is safe for dogs to eat in moderation. If you must feed your dog bread or give bread for treats use only plain white bread. Wheat bread is safe if the dog is not allergic to wheat grains. However, dogs can be allergic to white bread as well. The good news is feeding bread to our dogs does not usually cause stomach upset.

Feeding bread as a treat now and then will not harm the dog so long as the dog eats a well balanced diet otherwise and gets plenty of exercise. Bread can put on the pounds and add to dog obesity.

On the negative side, bread will not add nutrition to your dog's diet. It is a filler food that does not contain nutrients your dog needs. Bread itself is not toxic to dogs with a few exceptions. It depends upon what ingredients is in the bread you feed as to whether or not it might be toxic.

There are risks to feeding bread to your dog.

Dangerous bread dough: It is best to not feed bread dough as a dog's stomach provides a warm, moist and draft free environment that may cause the dough to rise within the dog's stomach. This rising action can distend the stomach and release toxic levels of ethanol into the dog's bloodstream. The pressure of dough rising in their stomach can also cause bloat, however, the real danger is from the alochol toxic effects.

If you suspect your dog has eaten bread dough by accident, call your vet immediately. This can pose a dire emergency.

Toxic bread ingredients: The biggest danger comes from raisins. Raisins are highly toxic to dogs. Garlic is another ingredient found in some breads that can be toxic to dogs. Nuts and seeds in some breads can cause problems for dogs. Some nuts such as macadamia nuts and almonds pose the greatest danger, but even the safer nuts can cause stomach irritation and pancreatitis because of the high fat content. Xylitol, an artificial sweetener is found in some brands of peanut butter and baked goods. Xylitol is toxic to dogs. If you feed bread to your dog regularly, always check the ingredients list.

Is bread good for dog upset stomach?

It is best to feed a dog with an upset stomach a bland diet of rice and boiled chicken for at home care. You can also call your vet for expert advise.

In conclusion:

If you want to feed your dog bread, feed ONLY very small pieces of bread at a time to avoid obesity that can then lead to diabetes. Also, be sure to read the ingredients label for toxic substances. Use plain or wheat bread and never feed bread dough.
