The American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog in St. Louis, Mo., United States is a 14,000 square foot museum containing an enormous collection of:

• dog-related materials
• decorative objects
• paintings
• sculptures
• bronzes
• prints

If you visit the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog take note the museum is in the process of relocating to New York City at 101 Park Avenue in January of 2019.

Dachshund lovers: There is a Dachshund Museum in Passau, Germany. This museum houses more than 4,500 Dachshund-related collectibles, and art all in honor of the Dachshund, a delightful breed of a dog. The founders have been collecting things for the last 25 years and now sharing their treasures with the rest of us.

The Saint Bernard is honored in Barrland, Martigny, Switzerland. This museum boasts of exhibits featuring the Saint Bernard in art, culture and literature. You will be able to meet and greet real Saint Bernards at the Barry Foundation Kennels on the first floor.

Grooming your dog improves its looks but also lifts the mood. The breeder you purchased your puppy from is also a wealth of information to you about grooming and the equipment you need to maintain a good home maintenance grooming program.

Here are a few general tips:

1. Before bringing your puppy home, obtain the right tools such as the right nail trimmers, a styptic powder used to stop bleeding such as Kwik Stop, teeth cleaning tools, brushes, wide and fine-tooth combs, shampoo and a blow dryer. For superior results use Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo. A grooming table with a grooming arm to hold the dog in place is helpful, but any sturdy table is fine.
2. Choose a brush according to type of your dog's hair. You can check with any professional groomer to get ideas of what type of brush is best for your breed of dog or consult your breeder.
3. Long and short haired breeds should be brushed every other day if not every day to remove dirt, debris and prevent matting, to control shedding and help create a shiny, healthy coat.
4. Keep your dog's nails trimmed.
5. Keep the hair trimmed around the eyes to avoid hair falling into the eyes and causing irritation.
6. Wipe the inside of your dog's ears weekly with a gentle ear cleaner such as Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner. You will avoid costly vet visits for ear infections.

Here are a few things NOT to do:

1. Avoid using "human" beauty and hygiene products such as shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste.  Human products contain chemicals that can be harmful to your pet. Many human toothpastes contain xylitol which is toxic to dogs.
2. The best way to remove mats is to use your fingers, a product especially designed for removing mats such as the Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist, different types of combs, your fingers and a lot of time and patience. Even better is to keep up with brushing routines avoiding mat production altogether. Why is the Dog Considered "Man's Best Friend?"

It is astonishing to realize that people have been breeding dogs since prehistoric times. Early dog breeders began using wolves to create domestic dogs. It is so hard to imagine that even the smallest of our dog breeds has roots going back to the wolves, but it is absolute truth.

People bred dogs in the beginning to perform specific various tasks and jobs. Some of the earliest jobs our dogs performed were:

• Hunting: People had to eat something, so by having this need to survive, they realized to train a dog to hunt for their food was one important way of survival.
• Guarding: This was another important aspect of survival. People needed ways to protect their homes and families. Why not breed a dog especially to work as their "guard."
• Herding: Herding is thought to be among one of the earliest jobs of the dog. People had the need for "something" to herd their sheep and other livestock animals, so why not train the dog for this very important role of survival.

For thousands of years and across all cultures humans bred dogs specifically toward physical and mental traits best suited for many different job roles vital to human survival. No wonder the dog is considered "man's best friend."

Learning about dogs has been a great passion of mine now for going on more than 20 years. I am fascinated by every dog breed's history and roles they play in our lives, but especially how dogs help human beings to survive.

From the sleek Greyhound types bred to chase fleet-footed prey and the huge mastiff types used as guard dogs and warriors (two ancient examples of dogs bred for specific jobs for human survival) to the tiniest of dogs such as the little Yorkie. 

The Yorkie or Shih Tzu is bred mainly as a companion. We read countless pieces of research telling us how healthy it is to live with a pet. The companion dogs add to human survival as they live with us comforting us in times of loneliness, in times of extreme grief, providing us with laughter with their antics and more. They could possibly be a God-sent prescription for people living alone to aid in their survival.

Down through time as human beings became more sophisticated with dog breeding, there came into existence specific breeds of dogs, custom-bred to suit the breeders' local needs and circumstances. For example, the Greyhound was the foundation type dog for the Irish Wolfhound and the dainty Italian Greyhound. All three of these dogs look like each other, but once you learn about each of them, you will never mistake one for the other.

There are over 340 dog breeds known throughout the world and from the creativity of human beings, this list continues to grow.
