The Long, Wrinkled Up Face Bloodhound

Bloodhounds are large scent hounds bred for hunting deer, wild boar and since the Middle Ages tracking down people. They stand about 23 to 27 inches at the shoulder and weigh up to 110 pounds. The most famous feature of a bloodhound is the long, wrinkled face with loose-hanging skin, huge drooping ears, and warm, deep-set eyes. The expression through his eyes convey solemn dignity. Coat color can be black and tan, liver (reddish brown) and tan or red.


He has a thick powerful body and legs which enable him to follow trails over miles of tough punishing terrain. It is not known exactly how long this breed has been around. Many authorities say the breed was known throughout the Mediterranean countries long before the Christian Era.

Claudius Aelianus noted the Bloodhound  was unrivaled for its scenting powers and his determination to stay on the trail  until the quarry was located way back in the 3rd century A.D.

Be willing to provide lots of exercise for your Bloodhound as most fall into the medium to high activity energy level. Develop exercise programs according to age and development stage.

Be prepared to watch Bloodhound puppies put on 3 to 5 pounds per week. Don't overdo it with heavy pounding exercise on asphalt/concrete and hard surfaces during the little puppy, growing puppy and teenage years. Choose grassy, barked/mulched walking trails or areas for walks instead.

Most Bloodhounds have no concept of their size or strength around small dogs or toddlers. Monitor play times with small dogs and toddlers. Everyone in the family needs to be involved with training the Bloodhound with everyone reinforcing the desired behaviors from the start. No other dog breed can play the "pitiful role" as well as a Bloodhound. Be strong and resolved, preparing him for the adult years to come. It is much easier to correct a 4 month old than an adult Bloodhound.

He is majestic looking as well as just plain "big." This guard dog is brawny and can tip the scales at 140 pounds plus stand as high as 30 inches at the shoulder. Just imagine meeting him at the door?

 He has  an all black double coat that is warm enough to allow the Black Russian Terriers to patrol some of the coldest habitable places on earth. During the war years many purebred animals became almost extinct in the Soviet Union, however, people still needed them.

The Black Russian Terrier was used as Military Dogs in 1958 when the first standard for them was published in "Regulations and Requirements for Training and Usage of Military Dogs." Today, they are more likely to be used guarding suburban families more than political prisoners. Their looks alone make them intimidating and dominating. They are not a good fit for novice owners. They are smart and sensitive dogs that train beautifully under a firm but loving hand. The Black and Tan Coonhounds not only have an amazingly sensitive nose like their cousins in the hound family, they also have a sweet disposition and long velvety ears.

The Black and Tan Coonhound is big and strong! A male can stand 27 inches at the shoulder. Take into account his majestic oval-shaped head and he is considerably taller. Where did he originate?

It is believed the Black and Tan Coonhound descended from the St. Hubert Hound (Bloodhound), then through the Talbot hound already known in 11th century England during the reign of William I, Duke of Normandy.

If possible, enroll him in obedience training classes and learn the training methods. He will not respond favorably to a heavy hand. Choose an instructor who will work with you and your Black and Tan Coonhound as a team. Be sure and teach him "good manners," as this will help if you consider competing in the obedience ring where the difference between a well-mannered dog and one that's not will save your sanity, and of course, increase your enjoyment with him.

Your main goal with the Black and Tan Coonhound is to raise a dog you can live with. Teach him the limits and restrictions early in life and be consistent. Teaching him a few basic commands may make quite a difference if you wish to hunt with him even in the woods. Coming when called, heeling and a command to stop barking (in places he should not bark of course, like your truck) will make quite a difference in a relationship with the Black and Tan Coonhound.

The heritage of Biewer Terrier dogs has always been much speculated. They first appeared in a litter of Yorkies bred by Mr. and Mrs. Biewer who had been raising and showing Yorkies for over 20 years. The Fluffy White Dog, the Bichon Frise

The Bichon Frise is French for "fluffy white dog." This is a very accurate description for the 10 to 20 pound four legged cotton balls. If you are one who suffers with allergies to dogs, this breed should bring you allergy relief as they are bred to be "hypoallergenic." In addition, another great aspect of this little dog is the fact that their white, curly coats rarely shed. Shedding is a lot what causes allergy reactions in humans.

The Hardy and Intelligent Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bermese Mountain dog thrives in cold weather (just like me). I love cold weather these days better than in my youth when I only lived for summer time to roll around. The Bermese is an intelligent and strong dog. Both qualities originally helped him to perform work on the Swiss farms.

Today he enjoys a life playing sports and spending time with his human companions. They are known to get along with the entire family, however, they may become especially attached to ONE lucky human within their family unit. He seems to play favorites within his family unit, much like many humans do in their family units.

Provide the Bermese Mountain dog a small fenced in yard as a place of convenience and safety. He is by nature moderately active. The Berger Picard is a Medium-Sized, Active and Athletic Herding Dog

He was bred to be a working companion. He responds well to training. His coat is shaggy with a wiry topcoat and a short dense undercoat which produces a weatherproof coat that is rough to touch. Colors are shades of fawn with or without gray underlay, trim on the ears and brindle.

He is one of the French herding breeds from a group of dogs brought to northern France and the Pas de Calais during the second Celtic invasion of Gaul around 400 BC. They have been a difficult breed to establish in North America. These dogs became scarce in Picardy, the region of northern France between Normandy and Paris when the area was ravaged during both World Wars.

The Bergamasco Sheepdog Has a Strong Work Ethic

The Bergamasco Sheepdog has a coat containing dog hair, goat hair and wool. They all combine to form black or gray felt-like mats which grow over the course of the dog's life. When the dog is approximately 6 years old the mats reach the ground. Another unique characteristic about this dog breed is that when the mats are wet they can actually smell like a "sweater." Isn't that amazing? Just look at this amazing dog breed!

The Bergamascos worked closely with their shepherds in a one-to-one relationship in Italy. Their goal was to protect the flock. A unique relationship existed between the Bergamasco dogs and their masters unlike other shepherding breeds. They enjoyed a partnership with the shepherd in the isolated high mountain valleys. Just one human, a small number of dogs and hundreds of sheep to tend, the shepherd needed his helpers to be as independent as they could be. Therefore, the Bergamasco was developed among them to be able to problem solve on its own.

The American Kennel Club assigned Bergamasco Sheepdogs to the herding group.

In my opinion, another uniqueness of this breed is how there is a curtain of hair that protects the dog from snow blindness.

The Bergamasco is very sociable and is able to develop independent relationships with each person in a household unit. They also will relate to each person individualized. I also find this fact amazing, yet, I have seen this trait even in my shih tzu breed.

Where did the Bergamasco Sheepdog originate? Dog historians can trace his origin back nearly 7,000 years to what is now Iran.

Another amazing discovery about this dog is that most people with allergies to dogs are NOT allergic to the Bergamasco coat. However, people with allergies to "wool" or "lanolin" have been known to have allergic reactions.

Despite his appearance of perhaps being a very huge dog, underneath the coat the Bergamasco Sheepdog is really a trim, athletic dog who weighs from 50 to 75 pounds (this is still a huge dog for me as I am used to 9 pound dogs).

It has been noted this dog breed does not have a tendency to overeat, so you may NOT have a "weight" problem to solve with he or she.

The dog has an extremely acute ability to hear and has been noted to be almost psychic aware of its environment. I suppose this would mean the dog can "foretell" what might be happening in the environment. This might be a good trait as a guard dog. Source: American Kennel Club

It would be nice for dog owners to be aware of "danger" of household intrusion ahead of time by learning what the dog's warnings ahead of time could be. They most likely could predict with accuracy approaching visitors or violent behavior. They have been known to warn unsuspecting people that another dog was preparing to attack. And this is truly amazing to me as well. This breed of dog could perhaps make an amazing guard dog for the right person or persons.

Judging from the appearance of this dog, I would say "grooming" might be a major concern. The Belgian Tervuren is One of the Four Belgian Herders

The Belgian Tervuren has long hair "blackened" fawn or red. He like the other three Belgian herders are characterized by an elegant but muscular frame, a proudly carried head, an alert and intelligent demeanor, and a work drive that is never satisfied. 

The male Belgian Tervuren has a more profuse sporty collarette around the neck. Both male and females are known in its country of origin as the Chien de Berger Beige. This variety owes its name to the Belgian village of Tervuren, home of M.F. Corbeel, who was an early devotee of the breed. Corbeel bred the fawn colored "Tom" and "Poes" who are commonly considered the foundation couple of the breed to produce the fawn color.

The Belgian Tervuren is an excellent listener. When it comes to training he is alert for instructions from his trainer as well as the praise. They do well with obedience training as well as a variety of other activities and dog sports including agility, rally, herding, coursing ability test, and tracking.

He is an excellent home companion, intelligent and sensitive so long as adequate training is provided him.

He reigned in the Belgian's countryside as a general herding and guard dog. I would venture to say he also would make a fantastic guard dog for his human companions. Source: American Kennel Club
