Are Coats, Hats and Rain Gear a Necessity for Your Dog?

Since Mother Nature provides the dog with its own outer fur coat you might think why bother with anything else. Little dogs, however, lose their body heat more quickly than the bigger dogs. Small dogs usually have a nice coat of hair, however, their small size still makes it necessary to add a little something else for colder temperatures. For the toy breed dogs it is like a necessity to provide them with something extra for those cold, blistery days outside. Outer garments will help the toy breed dog to retain their body heat in colder temperatures.

When purchasing a coat for your toy dog use the same good sense as you do when purchasing your own coat. Look for good construction. Wool and micro fiber fabric retain warmth. If you live in a climate that experiences cold winters look especially for materials made of wool and fleece. Be sure the coat covers the dog enough to keep him warm.

The coat should fit the dog comfortably around the neck, chest and armholes. Pay special attention to these areas and measurements when purchasing a coat. Coats don’t normally stretch like a sweater does. Exact fit will be more important than when purchasing a sweater for your dog.

What is the cost of a good dog coat? Designer dog coats can cost several hundreds of dollars. A coat purchased at a large pet supply store of which there are many of the same, can retail for $20 or less. If you live in an area like, Boston, New York, Maine or Minnesota where the winters can sometimes become severe you probably should invest a little more money than $20 on a coat for your dog. Although cost does not always mean quality, sometimes the best of materials used to construct the garment will cost a little more. So look over the coat carefully when you purchase and be sure it is the quality you want before paying the higher price.

Lycra body suits are available as an alternative to the traditional coats. Since the Lycra is stretchy material the product fits well on most dogs. The legs are built into the suit so the whole dog is covered securely. There are waterproof versions you can purchase for rainy climates. The Lycra suits are not quite as attractive as a faux fur or leather coat, but your dog will most likely love the warmth and comfort – sort of like you wearing a pair of sweats as opposed to tight fitting jeans!

Whoever would think that a raincoat would come in handy for a dog? They most certainly can be handy for your little dog. Little dogs can quickly become miserable in the rain, and like chilled to the bone. If you live in a rainy climate, your little dog would probably appreciate some sort of rain gear. As with all other dog fashions, the choices can be overwhelming, there are so many for us today.

Hats and hoods are just adorable on a dog of any size.  It is true that humans lose most of their heat from their heads. Dogs are not much different. A little hat or hood can also help your dog to retain body heat in colder climates.

Achieving a Beautiful Coated Shih Tzu Tips

There is nothing more beautiful than a just groomed and well groomed Shih Tzu. A Shih Tzu is a beautifully-coated dog. When you take the time to cultivate the Shih Tzu’s thick, luxurious coat it is truly a joy to behold.

Once the Shih Tzu’s coat is ruined or let go almost beyond repair, the Shih Tzu’s coat take endless time and energy to restore to its original beauty. Therefore, it is wise to take a little time each day to keep your Shih Tzu’s hair in top condition. This, of course, is especially true if a Shih Tzu is to be presented in the show ring.

Daily grooming is absolutely essential to the well-being of the Shih Tzu as well. Regardless of whether your Shih Tzu is a show dog or a house pet, the Shih Tzu’s coat requires regular, careful attention.

To make the Shih Tzu grooming routine a bit more simple, first establish grooming as a common practice in the daily routine and decide upon a particular spot for grooming your Shih Tzu each day. Over time, you will find the Shih Tzu grooming routine to be a very special bonding time for you and your pet companion.

Lighting is important. You will make the Shih Tzu grooming process easier for yourself if you choose a spot with good lighting.

Place your grooming table in a spot where you will have the least distractions. Keep toys, dog biscuits, other dogs or family pets out of sight.

Let the Shih Tzu know there is work to be done and you intend to do it. Be firm, yet gentle. Many Shih Tzu tend to resist first attempts at grooming. However, if introduced and maintained properly, the grooming routine will become a time the Shih Tzu looks forward to as “special time” spent with you. And always remember, “Surface grooming” is never enough. You must decide to groom your Shih Tzu from the skin to the end of the hair if your efforts are to be effective.

Shih Tzu are nervous about their footing, therefore, the grooming table should be steady. Ribbed rubber matting on the Shih Tzu grooming table is best for the surface and is easy to clean. I have found just a plain vinyl top card table is steady enough to perform all my Shih Tzu grooming chores. The vinyl top is easily cleaned and disinfected after use.

Do not overlook the tiny nails of a very young Shih Tzu puppy. I often dread clipping the nails of tiny, young Shih Tzu puppies. However, the task must be performed at least once weekly. The best way to trim the nails of a very young Shih Tzu puppy is to hold the puppy in your lap on its back. Keep a bottle of Styptic powder or a similar coagulant (powder to stop bleeding) handy in the event that one nail is cut too short and there is bleeding. Invariably, even as often as I have clipped nails, I will still end up with some bleeding at times. So don’t feel bad if it happens to you. Just keep your powder handy, dab it on with a q-tip, hold it tight with pressure for a minute or so and the bleeding will stop quickly.

There is no specific set amount of time recommended for grooming to produce the desired effect. You will get better over time. Shih Tzu with very heavy coats will naturally require more time. Again, remember to allow enough time each day for going over the entire Shih Tzu from the skin out. What you skip over one time will be twice as hard to remedy by the next Shih Tzu grooming session. You also risk pulling out twice as much hair when a spot is allowed to get twice as much tangled. If your desire is the beautiful coat so characteristic to a Shih Tzu, you must never let the coat tangle and twist into knots that result in hair breakage and hair loss.

The correct brush for the Shih Tzu should have pin bristles and the coat should be brushed in layers from the skin out to the very ends of the hair. If your brush gathers hair on one side only, you are not holding the brush properly. The Shih Tzu coat should be brushed in the direction in which the coat is to fall.

There is one exception to brushing the Shih Tzu’s coat in the direction in which the coat is to fall. The one exception is for Shih Tzu puppies. The method for brushing the coat of a Shih Tzu puppy is “every which way.” The “every which way” coat brushing of a Shih Tzu puppy actually stimulates the skin and hair cells to encourage growth of the permanent coat. The legs can be fluffed up as a last minute finishing touch as well.

Matron Mammary Gland Care After Whelping

It is necessary to examine your  matron’s mammary glands daily, directly before whelping and throughout nursing and weaning periods. A secretion of moderately thick liquid clear or brown with streaks of white milk is normal.

If this discharge is bloody or yellowish in color you need to consult with your vet. The first secretion, known as colostrums, is normal and present in every new mother. Colostrums contain the mother’s antibodies and are necessary to newborn puppies, particularly in the first 24 hours of life.

If you are tube or bottle feeding, and the dam has colostrums, express some into the formula. Keep your  dam updated on immunizations prior to mating time. Never vaccinate a pregnant dog. The antibodies in the colostrums protect the newborn puppies against infectious diseases to which the mother is immune.

Matrons will shed hair along the abdomen prior and after whelping. However, if your matron has long hair, it is likely you will need to trim close also. The best is to shave down the entire abdomen and genitalia area just prior to whelping. Puppies can ingest air while nursing if hair remains around the mammary glands. The presence of hair also collects milk and promotes rapid bacterial growth and can cause illness in the puppies, which can lead rapidly to death.

Heavy mammary glands require daily washing and thorough drying of the entire abdominal area until the  puppies are weaned. The  dam’s milk glands should always feel pliable, being moderately soft although heavy and full feeling to your examination. Your  matron is in trouble should there be any hardness in an entire individual gland or row, visible redness and/or red streaks or yellowish or bloody discharge expressed.

Placing a bandage over the nipple of the affected teat is usually sufficient to stop very young  puppies from nursing. Use a small amount of camphorated oil of Vicks VapoRub to stop older puppies from nursing at an infected site. Seek veterinarian care for your matron. Nursing from infected mammary glands could cause serious illness and diarrhea in the  puppies.

For clean up use a little bleach and sudsy water to clean the whelping box and the box you keep your newborn puppies in.

Reviving Lifeless Puppies at Birth

If a puppy’s progress is impeded, staying too long in the birth canal, it may be visibly lifeless. Some of these  puppies may have a faint heartbeat but no respiratory response. Others may show neither condition of life. A few visibly stillborn puppies will respond to efforts of resuscitation.

Never blow into a gurgling puppy’s mouth! Never blow into a  puppy’s mouth and nose before it has first been shaken-down. If you fail to shake a  puppy down before resuscitation is attempted on a visibly stillborn  puppy, you will force the amniotic fluid present into the  puppy’s lungs. The  puppy will die of asphyxiation, drowning in its own life fluid.

First prepare a visibly stillborn puppy for resuscitation by using the bulb syringe and shaking-down method several times to clear the airway as much as possible.

Wrap your hand around the puppy’s chest, your fingertips against the rib cage just behind the elbow. Pump your fingers two or three times in rapid succession to stimulate the heart. This action expels the oxygen in the  puppy’s lungs. Quickly follow the pumping by covering the  puppy’s muzzle, mouth and nose with your mouth. Blow gently. Do not blow too hard. You could rupture the  newborn’s delicate lung tissues. Do not blow air you have exhaled! Use your cheeks only to gently push fresh air into the puppy’s lungs. Give the puppy four breaths, then repeat the finger-pumping action over the lungs and heart. It may be necessary to repeat these resuscitation measures of breathing and pumping for as long as 20 or 30 minutes before the puppy may respond sturdily on its own.

Check the puppy’s color after four or five minutes of resuscitation. Are the puppy’s pads and gums pink or blue? If the gums are white or bluish white, it may be too late to save this particular  puppy. If the  puppy’s gums and pads on the paws were pink at birth, and pink in response to your resuscitation efforts, there is a chance the  puppy can be revived.

Once the  puppy is resuscitated and breathing well on its own, give the  puppy a final brisk toweling. Thoroughly dry the  puppy, causing it to cry and use its lungs. Give the  puppy back to its mother.

Identifying Puppies:

Nail polish to the  puppy’s toenails can be used to identify look-alikes. For example, the right front foot toenails of one  puppy may be painted red, another  puppy’s painted in pink. The left forepaws on two other  puppies, and the hind toenails on four additional sibling  puppies is left. Bottle Feeding Orphan Puppies

Nursing bottles for orphaned puppies can be obtained through the veterinarian, pet supplier, wholesale catalogs or the internet. You should purchase several nipple styles to see which works best for you and your puppies.

Puppies can become colicky just like human newborn babies. Be careful about allowing a  puppy to ingest air when either tube or bottle feeding. Always turn the bottle and nipple end down, before offering it to the puppy. All the air in the bottle will rise to the solid end. When the  puppy is nursing freely bubbles rise in the bottle. The bubble flow should be fairly rapid, small and uniform in size, rising in even response to the  puppy’s nursing. If the bubbles are large the  puppy may also be ingesting air. Check the nipple cap.

Occasionally remove the bottle from the  puppy’s mouth to allow a return passage of air back into the bottle. A return passage of air occurs either through turning the bottle upright or by momentarily loosening the cap. Do not abruptly pull the bottle from the  puppy’s mouth. Place a finger in the corner of the puppy’s lip to break the nursing hold.

Some puppies may instinctively resist the unnatural feel of a manufactured nipple.

1. If the dam is available, rub the bottle and nipple and a towel over her mammary glands.

2. Drape this towel across your stomach and lap.

3. Hold the puppy on your lap against your abdomen.

4. Express a small amount of formula from the bottle and wipe it over the nipple.

5. As you introduce the bottle’s nipple to the  puppy’s mouth, move your legs slightly, jiggling your lap.

6. Also jiggle the bottle up and down in the puppy’s mouth using tiny motions. The movements re-create the dam’s breathing and  puppy’s nursing position on the dam that should cause the  puppy to instinctively and reflexively latch onto the nipple.

7. Have lots of patience.

You will need to burp the bottle fed puppy after each feeding. Do not allow the puppy to nurse the bottle dry to avoid a colicky baby. You can burp your puppy the same as you would a newborn human baby on your shoulder with gentle pats and rubs between the shoulder blades.

To Avoid Pancreatitis Feed Your Dogs a High Quality Diet

The disease of pancreatitis can occur in your dog if you feed the dog table scraps and/or garbage. It is important to feed your dog a well-balanced diet of high quality pet food. Pancreatitis presents itself from a severe inflammation of the pancreas. The pancreas is an organ that aids in the digestion of the dog's food.

Symptoms of pancreatitis in the dog include:

• A dog who suddenly starts to vomit
• The vomiting may cause dehydration and the dog may become lethargic
• The dog may also experience diarrhea

The above symptoms are of course common to many diseases in the canine population. To help your vet make an appropriate diagnosis, be prepared to give him or her a good past history of events of your dog's eating patterns and what you been feeding the dog as well as other health related history. A good history from you, the dog owner, will help your vet determine whether or not the dog has pancreatitis due to improper eating or some other disease.

If you have been feeding your dog a pet food that is high in fat, or a high-fat meal, or the dog has actually been getting into the garbage can and eating from therein, the diagnosis could very well be “pancreatitis.”

Certain pesticides and some drugs have side effects that will cause an episode of pancreatitis. However, studies show there is higher incidence of pancreatitis among miniature Schnauzers and in obese animals. If your dog is on the “fat” side, the symptoms described above could be an episode of pancreatitis. Your vet will need to make the final diagnosis. If your dog vomits repeatedly, call your vet immediately as you do not want him or her dehydrating. Force water and some Pedialyte if repeated vomiting and diarrhea occurs during the time you await your vet’s appointment or in route to the emergency vet clinic.

Episodes of pancreatitis requires vet examination. The pancreas of a dog makes digestive enzymes in an inactive form. These are then changed to the active form when they enter the small intestine of your dog. When a dog develops pancreatitis, the active enzyme is made in the pancreas and the organ digests itself. Damage to the pancreas may lead to diabetes and loss of liver function.

When your dog is diagnosed with pancreatitis, the intestinal tract will require rest. All food and water should be withheld from the dog for a period of time. If your dog is dehydrated he or she may require vet hospitalization so intravenous fluids can be given. Pain medication may also be prescribed for your dog during this time.

The dog normally responds to treatment for pancreatitis within a few days and can be put back on food. Slowly introduce an easily digestible diet to avoid diarrhea again. Remember, the dog's digestive tract has been “irritated.”

When a dog has repeated episodes of acute pancreatitis or other signs of diabetes, the final diagnosis may be “chronic pancreatitis.” Acute pancreatitis occurs suddenly and does not last long. There is no permanent damage to the organ when “acute pancreatitis” occurs in the dog. However, in “chronic pancreatitis” the pancreas does undergo permanent damage and possible loss of function may occur.

To avoid Pancreatitis, avoid feeding your dog table scrapes and keep him or her out of the garbage can. Always feed the highest quality of pet food you can afford. I recommend feeding a formula from Life's Abundance.
