Heartworm Facts

Heartworms are transmitted via mosquito bites and not from pet to pet. They live in the heart and large blood vessels. Mature worms produce larvae that goes back into circulation and can be picked up by mosquitoes to transmit to another host. This process creates a vicious cycle.
Dogs make the most ideal hosts, however, cats can also be infected. Dogs experience the most severe form of the disease. Heartworm can do a lot of damage in the heart and therefore prevention is key.
As the parasites disrupt a normal heart and lung function, pets display signs of heart disease such as:
  • cough
  • low energy
  • coffee-colored urine
Treatment involves either surgery or drugs. Bottom line remains prevention is so much better than taking chances of contracting this disease. Heartworm prevention is available in a number of forms:
  • pills
  • injections
  • topical
Heartworm is more prevalent in the Atlantic and Gulf states, however, it has been diagnosed in all 50 states. Even if you live in a state with low incidences of the disease, all states have climates where heartworm can flourish. You can see how many cases of heartworm have been reported in your area by visiting https://heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/incidence-maps.

Be aware that all natural remedies do not work as well as medications. Heartworm kills and you simply do not want to take the risk. Pets need monthly prevention for adequate protection. Test your pets yearly for heartworm, even if they have been on regular heartworm preventive medications. Why? Because things happen regardless of how hard you to try to be consistent with prevention treatment:
  • you might be late with a dose
  • the dog spits out the pill and you miss this incident
Although adult heartworm disease is treatable, some animals just don't survive. It is always better to be safe with careful prevention measures than to be sorry.

Why Does My Pet Eat Grass?

It’s a question pet parents routinely ponder. While there are competing theories regarding why dogs and cats consume grass, a conclusive answer has yet to be supported by scientific study. Here’s a brief overview of the current speculation behind your companion animal’s impulse to graze …
 jojo shih tzu
1. It’s an ancestral thing. The prey of wild dogs and cats frequently have grasses in their intestinal system, so domesticated dogs and cats still retain a yearning for a spot of grass in their diet.

2. Our companion animals know of some nutritional value in grasses that we have yet to uncover (such as antioxidants).

3. They do it to provoke vomiting if they’ve eaten something that has upset their stomachs.

4. They are augmenting their keen sense of smell with taste to discover more about their environment.

5. They simply like the taste and texture of grass, so it’s just for the sake of satisfaction!
Although we may never know the exact reason why, we do know that this is one of the most commonly asked questions that veterinarians hear from their clients. If you notice excessive grass-eating with either your dog or cat, please consult your vet.

Moving to a New Place with Dogs

Moving is usually a big deal for everyone concerned including your pets. Your goal should be to help  your dog be happy, healthy and well adjusted in the new place. Here are a few tips.

 Robin Carlson

Moving to a new house no matter where it is can be stressful for everyone including your dog. In fact, it can be especially confusing and upsetting to your dog. Make one of your biggest priorities to create stability and consistency for the dog or dogs.

Before you head out, be sure to have contact information ready for the local emergency veterinary hospital. If you will need a new primary vet, have one lined up and have your pet's medical documents transferred to the new vet's office in advance.

As much as possible, keep your dog's routines consistent during the move. Once inside the new home, immediately create a comfortable safe place for the dog or dogs. Unpack your pet's items first. Items such as crates, beds, feeding and water bowls can be comforting and familiar for pets to have on hand immediately once arriving into the new place.

 Robin Carlson

Fill prescriptions in advance of the move. Research and learn how the new climate if any could impact your dog's health. Find out about fleas, ticks, and heart worm in the new area prior to your move.

Keep in mind that everything is new and different for your dog or dogs. They might backslide a little on things like potty-training or crate training. In a new place your dog or dogs might need new training for new spots or about basic manners.

Pack some high value treats and make training a game. For best results use Life's Abundance Tasty Reward Treats.

  • Positive reinforcement has never tasted so good
  • Perfectly sized for carrying in your pocket
  • Gluten free, no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors
  • Made in USA with Chicken and lamb from New Zealand

Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.
Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised chicken and lamb.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors..
With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

Secure your pet on moving day. The last thing you want is to lose he or she on the way to the new place. Wouldn't that be devastating? All it takes is just one door left open by a mover for a pet to escape through during the chaos of moving. Be sure your pets wear current identification at all times. It actually is best to crate or kennel your pet in a quiet, familiar place of the home until it is time to move he or she.

Be sure in advance of the local ordinances of new address concerning number of pets or breed restrictions.

Once you arrive to the new place make certain everything is safe before allowing your dog off leash to explore his new home.

How Dogs Experience the World Around Them

Do you wonder how your dog perceives the world around him? Have you ever wondered what is he or she really thinking?
 KTW Wraps
According to researchers canines actually construct a mental image of what they smell before they see it. A dog's eye sight is weaker than its smell. Now for more insights. The following gives us a closer look at how dogs view, interact and understand the world.
Just as we see slightly differently with each eye, a dog can smell with each separate nostril to help identify the location of a scent. In addition, dogs form a picture in their head of what they are expecting to find when they're looking for a scent!
 Kathy Tucker
The dog has a special organ in the nasal cavity called the vomeronasal organ specifically to process scent. Their sense of smell is 10,000 times better than ours. Dogs can detect the equivalent of a half teaspoon of sugar in a swimming pool! Isn't that amazing?
A dog's sight is much worse than ours. They are also red-green colorblind.
Dogs hear at a frequency of 40 Hz to 60Hz while humans only heart at 12 Hz to 20 Hz. They can hear sounds from as much as four times further away than humans.
Hound dogs really do have a better sense of smell than other dog breeds, thanks to selective breeding. Working dogs such as German Shepherds come in close behind.
