Heartworm Facts

Heartworms are transmitted via mosquito bites and not from pet to pet. They live in the heart and large blood vessels. Mature worms produce larvae that goes back into circulation and can be picked up by mosquitoes to transmit to another host. This process creates a vicious cycle.
Dogs make the most ideal hosts, however, cats can also be infected. Dogs experience the most severe form of the disease. Heartworm can do a lot of damage in the heart and therefore prevention is key.
As the parasites disrupt a normal heart and lung function, pets display signs of heart disease such as:
  • cough
  • low energy
  • coffee-colored urine
Treatment involves either surgery or drugs. Bottom line remains prevention is so much better than taking chances of contracting this disease. Heartworm prevention is available in a number of forms:
  • pills
  • injections
  • topical
Heartworm is more prevalent in the Atlantic and Gulf states, however, it has been diagnosed in all 50 states. Even if you live in a state with low incidences of the disease, all states have climates where heartworm can flourish. You can see how many cases of heartworm have been reported in your area by visiting https://heartwormsociety.org/veterinary-resources/incidence-maps.

Be aware that all natural remedies do not work as well as medications. Heartworm kills and you simply do not want to take the risk. Pets need monthly prevention for adequate protection. Test your pets yearly for heartworm, even if they have been on regular heartworm preventive medications. Why? Because things happen regardless of how hard you to try to be consistent with prevention treatment:
  • you might be late with a dose
  • the dog spits out the pill and you miss this incident
Although adult heartworm disease is treatable, some animals just don't survive. It is always better to be safe with careful prevention measures than to be sorry.
