The Curly-Coated Retriever

The Curly-Coated Retriever is strong, robust and agile. His coat is full of small, tight, water-resistant crisp curls. He is bred to be a multi-purpose hunting retriever working for as long as there is work to be done. He will retrieve game in the heaviest of cover and iciest of waters. Colors are black or liver.

The Coton de Tulear is a Charming, Little French Doggie

I think I am in love all over again! Such a cute little dog is the Coton de Tulear. They are well known for a profuse white coat that feels as soft as cotton. In fact, coton is French for "cotton."



They stand about 9 to 11 inches tall and weigh somewhere between 8 and 13 pounds. They are robustly sturdy for their size. Most people cannot help but "smile" at the sight of a Coton's sweet expressive face. I know I did and was immediately in love. Their personality is bright, happy-go-lucky, having endless charm and born to love and to be loved. It is a recipe that is for sure to warm your heart and brighten your every day. They will follow you to the ends of the earth! Below is as a show dog:


They are good with children which makes them an ideal family pet. They love to clown around. Your kids will adore them as much as you do. They are also good with other dog breeds, depending upon how good the other dogs breeds are with them of course. They will never be a bully and will never start a fight.



They require weekly grooming. Shedding is seasonal and they are hypoallergenic. They are expected to live  15 to 19 years. Below is a happy "long legged Coton de Tulear."



The history of the Coton de Tulear is not very well documented. It is most commonly believed that they are descendants of dogs who survived an ancient shipwreck near the Madagascar coast. They were closely controlled by the Merina in the 17th century, who was the ruling tribal monarchy in Madagascar. They are happy little dogs! Directions:
Shake well. Gently apply enough drops into the ear canal so that it is moistened. Massage the base of the ear canal to help loosen wax. Feeding Toy Dogs

One pitfall new owners of toy dogs fall into is the feeding of "puppy formulas" way too long. The toy dog may seem like a baby for a longer period of time due to its small size, however, be aware that a maturing toy dog needs a different food formula than a young puppy. The Arrival of a New Puppy

Welcoming a new puppy into your home is filled with happiness. It can be difficult to announce the event especially if there are young children in the house. • allow the new puppy to sleep as much as he or she wants and don't be alarmed if that is not much or a whole lot
• if other pets are in the home, don't push them on the new puppy right away
• keep new puppy isolated for its safety and the safety of other pets, allow older pets to get acquainted with a new pet through the wire of the cage where the new puppy can feel safe

The Very Lively Mexican Hairless Dog

He was known long ago in Mexico as the Tepeitzcuintli. In the United States he is known as the Mexican Hairless. He is full of vivacity and spirit and about the size of a small Fox Terrier, well proportioned and shapely. In weight he ranges from 3 to 15 pounds.



The Mexican Hairless dog is hairless on body with a suggestion of coat being in the short tuft of coarse hair on top of the skull. His historical background is similar to the Chinese Crested. He comes in the same colors as the Chinese Created as well. He can be spotted, solid or splashed.

Most Mexican Hairless dogs are slow to warm up to human beings. Once they do, they are usually exceptionally devoted to their owners. They are a bit difficult to train and quick to anger.

This little dog was greatly revered by the Aztecs and was named for the great god Zolo. The god Zolo was believed to have come to earth in the form of the Zolo dog.

His eyes are hazel, yellow or dark. His skin is smooth and soft, not wrinkled. It is interesting to note this dog is usually hot to touch. The tail is long, a smooth rail, carried out similar to that of Manchester Terriers.

Maternal Immunity

Puppies are born with very few antibodies against disease. The mother will first produce colostrum. Colostrum is the first milk and is nature's way of providing newborn puppies with their first doses of antibodies to produce against disease. Puppies' bodies will not produce their own antibodies to disease until they are about six weeks old. Puppies must have at least one feeding of colostrum in their first 24 hours of life. By keeping the mother updated on vaccinations, she has a good chance of passing on her immunity to newborn puppies that helps to guard them against disease.

Access to colostrum is only good for the puppies in the first 24 hours of life. Access to the mother's colostrum in the first 24 hours of life is crucial.

The immunity to disease passed through the mother's colostrum called "maternal immunity" usually lasts for several weeks in the puppy's system. It gradually fades as the puppy's own immune system begins developing and becomes capable of producing its own antibodies at around 14 to 16 weeks of age.

The exact time of maternal immunity's fading is very variable, but it generally occurs between 6 and 16 weeks. The goal of vaccination programs is to cover any gap in immunity by starting vaccines immediately after the maternal protection fades and when the puppy's body is capable of producing its own antibodies.

Vaccines are given to puppies several times to cover this gap. When the maternal immunoglobulins fade and leave the puppy without protection from disease, vaccines given at this time will prompt the puppy's maturing immune system to produce its own protective antibodies against disease. To be sure the series of vaccines given your puppy provides the immunity it needs, you can ask your vet for a Titer Test.

Do not vaccinate a pregnant shih tzu. You must do so before she is pregnant on a yearly basis.
