How to Keep Your Pet Puppies/ Dogs Safe

Avoid upset from a  puppy wondering off and getting lost. Learn how to prevent illness or injuries. It is always so much more heartbreaking to find out after the fact that you could have done something to prevent an illness or injury. In this article I hope to share with you some good information about basic safety measures to prevent mishaps and to help ensure your dog/puppy’s safety and well-being.

Preventing Puppies/Dogs from Becoming Lost

Collars and Identification tags are important:

Place a collar and dog identification tag on your dog/ puppy as soon after you receive him or her as is possible. There are kind people in this world who would return your dog/ puppy in the case of loss if only they knew whom to call. Be sure to put your name and telephone number on the tag.

Training and Fencing is mandatory whenever possible:

Teach your Shih Tzu puppy how to “sit” and “stay” in the house when a door to the outside is opened. Most of the Shih Tzu I own goes out only one door in my house. This is the door that leads to a totally fenced in yard. Most of them will not go out any other door when it is opened. I did have a problem with my Little Lucy running out the front door, into the street, waddled down the street as fast as she could into the neighbors drive across the road and was confronted with their huge black Lab. She quickly turned around and came back home! But while on her journey, she was joyful and happy as could be thinking she was out on a delightful adventure that could have taken her life had the big black lab not stopped her head on.

I keep a lock on the gate to my fenced in yard.

Households with young children running in and out pose a special problem. They might just inadvertently let the dog/puppy out. If this is the case in your household, you probably will want to install door locks that cannot be opened by the children without your helping them. You can also put baby gates in areas that lead to the outside doors if this works for you.

When you walk your dog/puppy always keep him or her on a leash, unless you have him or her off leash trained.

Keep records that can help you locate your dog/puppy if he or she is ever lost. Keep a current photo handy and a good description of your dog/puppy that includes distinguishing marks such as white around one eye and black around the other eye. Microchips provide good identification information for your dog/puppy.

A common mishap with indoor pets is poisoning from eating common houseplants. Below is a list of toxic plants:

•Misletoe
•Philodendron
•Potted chrysanthemum
•Weeping fig

Check with your vet for a phone number for a poison control center for pets. Keep the number posted near the phone and use it if your pet ever eats anything you know or think might be poisonous and your vet’s office is closed.

Choosing a Happy Space for a New Puppy

Help your new puppy develop good habits right from day one in your home. The earlier your puppy becomes accustomed to his surroundings and belongings the more secure he will be in a new environment. Consider the following tips:



•Create a space for your puppy before he or she arrives
•Invest in a comfortable bed
•Baby gates may be appropriate for your particular situation
•A collar and leash for your  puppy should be waiting in his space
•3 or 4 chew toys and Life's Abundance Treats and Chew Treats
•Plan out a regular schedule of eating, potty times, playing, exercising and confinement

At first you will want to confine your puppy to a designated area in your home. This is for the safety of the puppy when you are not around to supervise and also to keep him away from your personal belongings. It has been said by many dog trainers that giving puppies too much freedom too soon is a major cause for puppies developing bad habits. Instead of giving a new puppy full run of your house, give him access only to the objects you provide for him such as his personal toys chews, food and water dish, bed, etc., in a small confined space, which is “his own personal pad.”

Choose the puppy’s space wisely. If you choose a place pleasant, giving the puppy plenty of room to move about freely, but not a huge area of space, you can use it for his “room” far into the future. If you get the puppy used to this one space right from day one, it will be easier on you and him to leave him in that space anytime you need to leave or wish to do something that does not involve the puppy. You will come home to a puppy who has been comfortable and content even though you were away.

Even though you designate a particular space for the new puppy, you can still have him or her out and about with you and the family as much as you desire and even sleep in the same room with whomever you desire at nighttime. His or her space does not mean the puppy has to remain there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This is only a spot you want to get him use to for times you cannot play with him, or supervise him, to keep him out of trouble and to keep your belongings out of his reach.

All these suggestions should make the puppy feel like an important member of your family.

The space you choose is entirely up to you. A lot of people like to use a kitchen, utility room or bathroom. You do want to choose a space that will “always” belong just to the puppy.

Kitchens are a good place to section off a space for your puppy as kitchens seem to be a place where the family gathers and where the pet should be also. A space such as this helps to keep the puppy a constant part of the family.

Confinement for hours at a time, even when the is older, is always better in a space or a room where he can move about, stretch his legs, or lie on his side with his legs straight out if he wants instead of confinement to a crate or cage. Crates and cages are great for housebreaking techniques, but not for the “total space” you want to give your in your home as his own space.

A good idea is to block in the puppy with baby gates so he can see outside his space. Puppies love nothing more than feeling a part of whatever is going on with their people. Never, ever lock your puppy in a room all by himself with the lights out.

Cages

If your breeder has already trained the puppy to use a crate, place the crate inside his space with the door open.

Consistent use of a crate is an excellent way to housebreak most puppies. Not all puppies are created alike.  I have had some puppies I could use the crate for housebreaking, and others I could not.

A cage is not a good place to keep a puppy for long periods of time or for the times of the rest of your life when you are away. A cage is a good tool to use for housebreaking and to create a cozy den area with nice, soft, plush blankets inside and the door open for the puppy to go in and out as he so desires. It should be a “refuge” place for your puppy once housebreaking is over.

The Cesky Terrier is a Handsome Hunter

He is assigned to the Terrier Group in the AKC registries, and looks like a cross between a Scottie and a Sealyham. The Cesky Terrier is muscular, has short legs and stands no taller than 13 inches at the shoulder.



The colors are several shades of gray that includes a stunning "platinum." His wavy hair gives him a sporty, continental look. His medium-long neck lends him a dash of elegance.

They were developed by Frantisek Horak. Mr. Hoark was born at the Castle Karlova Koruna in Chlumec Czechoslovakia June 12, 1909. This area was where Isabela Palomino horses were bred. Young Frantisek wanted to breed horses and ponies when he was very young. At the age of 9, his parents allowed him to start breeding dogs.

These little dogs are loyal family members who require continued socialization. They have a reserved nature towards strangers. Like most terriers, they like to dig. Give he ore she a secure backyard where exercise is safe and secure. Other exercise can include tracking, agility, earth dog and obedience.

This little terrier has been portrayed on postage stamps in Czechoslovakia.

Shih Tzu Top Knots, Eyes and Ear Care

The standard coat of a Shih Tzu should be luxuriously long and dense with a good wooly undercoat. The hair on top of the head may be tied up. When a Shih Tzu is completely brushed and combed the Shih Tzu should have a sleek look. The beard comes to a point and a long, luxuriant moustache flows over the beard.

Method of making a Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy topknot:
1.Part the hair from the ear on both sides of the head.
2.Gather up in one hand the hair in the middle and slip on a latex band at the base.
3.The band may have to be wrapped around twice to make it secure.
4.A ribbon or barrette is recommended to be attached to latex band.

How to make your own Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy bows:

1. Cut one yard of ribbon. The ribbon can be any width you desire.

2. From this yard of ribbon, cut another piece about 5” long. Splice this in half lengthwise.

3. Cut the remainder of the yard in half. This material should give you enough for two ribbons or bows.

4. Wrap one of the long pieces around two fingers. Slip the folded ribbon off your fingers and double it over.

5. With a utility scissors, snip off a piece at the corners in a “V” shape, but not a sharp V, for you will lose any thread of support. There should be a piece of ribbon left at the centerfold to hold it all together.

6. Take one of the spliced pieces (5”) and tie the ribbon at the centerfold securely.

7. Separate each fold by gently pulling out and twisting each fold out from the center. Do both sides. When all the folds are pulled out and twisted, the bow is completed. All that remains is to fasten the bow to a tuft of hair, using the ends of the center splice to tie the knot. Cut off any excess ribbon that remains.

Care of the Shih Tzu or Shih Tzu puppy’s ears:

Because of the long hair covering the Shih Tzu puppy’s ears, problems can develop when the ear gets little air. Clean the excess hair out of your Shih Tzu puppy’s ear canal (not the ear flap) to improve air circulation and help prevent infection.Use a high quality ear cleaner weekly and you will likely avoid costly vet appointments for ear infections, etc. Use Life's Abundance ear cleaner:

Swimming Safety Tips for Pet Parents and Their Dogs

The above dog breed I chose for this article may not be the most perfect for swimming, but if you listen to the video, you might learn tips that can make him an accomplished swimmer with you. This dog breed looks like a sheep. It is called a Bedlington Terrier.
