Help for Dogs Who are Constipated

Dogs usually have one to two bowel movements per day. Dogs who are suffering from constipation will:
  • not go at all
  • strain to defecate
  • produce rock-hard stools
  • in chronic cases, the constipated dog may retain hard, dry fecal matter in their digestive tract
Causes of constipation include:
  • lack of exercise
  • more serious problems such as cancer
  • blockages inside the colon
  • a diet lacking in fiber is most often the problem for constipation
  • Older dogs are more prone to constipation
What can you do for a dog who is constipated?

If the problem just started, a few home remedies will work.
  1. Feed your dog a little bit of pumpkin. Pumpkin is high in fiber and moisture plus many dogs like the taste of pumpkin.

How to Deal with Coat Shedding

Some dogs shed more than other dogs. For example, these breeds among others shed more:
  • Labrador Retrievers
  • Newfoundlands
  • Pekingese
  • and more
Breeds that are almost shed-free include:
  • Dachshunds
  • Poodles
  • Shih Tzu
  • Border Terriers
  • and more
Of course there are reasons why some breeds shed and others do not. How you deal with the shedding is subject of this article.

We know that different dog breeds shed in different amounts and some shed seasonally while others shed all year long. It depends a lot on what type of coat your dog has. The Golden Retrievers has a thick, double-coat, which makes it necessary by nature to shed all year long.
Dogs who shed seasonally usually shed in spring and fall. You will notice your dog's coat becoming lighter in the spring. This prepares the dog for the warmer weather. In preparation for colder weather, you will also see a change in your dog's coat and higher incidences of shedding.
For dogs that shed seasonally, you’ll notice that most shedding occurs in the spring and fall. In the spring, your dog’s coat will become lighter, in preparation for the warm weather. Similarly, in the fall, in preparation for winter, you will see a change in your dog’s coat and a higher incidence of shedding.
What should do for dogs that shed often?
Brush them weekly, if not several times per week and daily during heavy shedding. Life's Abundance distributes a wonderful product to help you at brushing time. Bath Fresh Mist neutralizes odors, leaves the coat silky and shiny and also freshen up the coat in between baths.
Use the right brush for the type of coat your dog has. For dogs with short coats such as Beagles or Pugs use:
  • A natural-bristle brush, hound mitt or glove with bristles on the palm does a fine job loosening dead hair
How you brush also matters. While brushing a short coat:
  • Brush the coat first in opposite direction of hair growth. This action helps pull dead hair out.
  • After the above step, brush in the direction of hair growth to remove it.
  • Repeat this process a few times to get out all the hair. The process also helps distribute natural oils from the skin all over the coat.
  • If you are using a hound mitt or glove, massage he coat in a circular motion to loosen hair. Now brush the coat in direction of hair growth. Repeat a few times. Practice this procedure especially during heavy shedding seasons.
For dogs with longer coats such as Pomeranians, Shih Tzu, Collies, Yorkies, etc.:
  • Use a tool that can reach down under the outer coat and grab the downy undercoat to pull the dead hairs out.
  • Slicker brushes are excellent for this type of coat.
  • Brush the coat in both directions a few times. You will start to pull out less and less hair with the brush.
  • When a double-coated dog really starts to shed, switch over to a coat rake or shedding tool. Pull the tool along the coat in the direction of hair growth, then pull up and away.
  • If you use a shedding tool with blades, do not press too hard.
  • If you run into tangles or mats, use a steel comb or a mat splitter plus some Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist.
Health problems that may cause excessive shedding include:
  • endocrine disorders such as hypothyroidism
  • congenital problems such as follicular dysplasia
  • allergies can cause skin and shedding problems
If you have a dog who itches a lot until sore spots come up try using Life's Abundance Soothing Mist. This product will soothe skin irritations and nourish the skin with a blend of aloe vera, marigold, lavender, and chamomile. If skin irritations become severe, be sure to consult with a vet.

What is the most effective method to combat shedding?
  • Simply, regular brushing, combing, and the use of gentle all natural shampoo and grooming products such as those offered through Life's Abundance.
