What to do if Your Cat or Dog Becomes Poisoned

Many things non-toxic to humans can be deadly to dogs and cats. Chocolate for example a lot of people already know is dangerous - - the dark chocolate. Cough and cold medicines containing phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine or acetaminophen are all dangerous to cats and dogs. Never give these medications to your cats or dogs.

ADD and ADHD prescription drugs can cause tremors, seizures, heart problems and even death in cats and dogs. Cats are highly sensitive to antidepressant medications. Cymbalta and Effexor can cause severe neurological and heart problems.

Rat poison is deadly for dogs.

• the more evidence you can supply your vet, the easier it will be to diagnose the problem and render a solution.
• call your vet's office for guidance prior to your visit or contact the 24-hour pet poison hotline at 800-213-6680 (there is probably a fee).
• do not induce vomiting unless your vet recommends this
• never give pet oil, milk, food, salt or anything orally without talking to a vet first

The prognoses for poisoning is better the sooner it is reported. Never hesitate to get help as soon as possible. Immediate treatment could save your pet's life.

The Independent, Friendly and Affectionate Cirneco dell'Etna Dog Breed

The Cirneco Dell'Etna dog breed has been present in Sicily for over 2,500 years. He shares a common origin with the Pharaoh Hound and other breeds throughout the Mediterranean basin.

What does the evidence show?

Paleo diets have seem to be the "thing" in human nutrition for the past few years. Thus far, there is not any one strict definition of a paleo diet. The general idea is that if a caveman did not eat it, neither should you or in the case of dogs, "your dog." Basically, the paleo diet avoids all processed foods such as cereals, pastas, and added sugars. The paleo diet does not advise eating grains and advises to keep carbohydrate sources limited to vegetables and fruits.

A paleo diet is nutrient-dense having every ingredient chosen for a purpose. Carbohydrates chosen are those that cause less peaks and valleys in blood glucose and energy levels throughout the course of a day. Paleo diets avoid things like fillers and artificial colorings and flavorings. A classic paleo diet does not allow the use of legumes like peas or lentils, which in fact, are excellent sources of protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals.

Limited ingredient diets came into being due to a wave of pet parents being concerned their dogs had food allergies. Fact is more the number of dogs who have food allergies is not as large as the number of dogs who have "food allergy symptoms."

The idea behind limited ingredient diets is to limit intake to proteins to an unusual source that a pet has not eaten before and carbohydrates that a dog has not eaten before, and hopefully create a diet for the dog that does not trigger food allergy symptoms. The end result of this thinking brought about diets such as kangaroo and oats, or duck and peas.

The most common ingredients that cause food allergens in dogs are:

• beef
• chicken
• lamb
• wheat
• corn
• eggs

The above ingredients amounts to the most common used ingredients in pet foods. If your dog has a true food allergy, he or she is probably going to need to undergo an elimination trial and all sorts of testing to see what is going on and then move onto a special diet for the rest of his or her life. If he or she has some minor symptoms of food intolerance or if you are just trying to avoid the major allergens in dog foods, it can be cost prohibitive to put your pet on a novel protein diet of which many are "prescription-only" or are not meant for all life stages. In the long run of things, it just does not make sense to seek out one of these diets if you do not have to due to medical necessity.

The Chow Dog Breeed With the Mane of a Lion and a Personality Like a Cat

Chows are compact and powerful standing between 17 and 20 inches at the shoulder. They have several unique features:

• a lion's mane ruff around the head and shoulders
• a blue-black tongue
• deep-set almond eyes which give them a snobbish expression
• stilted (stiff-legged) way of moving

Chows can have a rough or smooth coat in red, black, blue cinnamon or cream.

Their personalities are serious-minded, dignified, bright and aloof. They are not very active dogs. A couple of good walks a day should be enough exercise. They are better with older children. It is not recommended you house them with other dogs. Shedding is seasonal. The Chow needs grooming about once per week. They can top out in weight at 45 to 70 pounds, and stand about 17 to 20 inches. Their life expectancy is 8 to 12 years. You can expect the Chow to bark very little.

The Chow as a breed is more than 2,000 years old and may even date back much farther. The breed probably originates from the northern parts of Siberia.

You will find them to be a bit stubborn and less eager to please than other breeds of dogs. They have a cat-like personality making them very independent. A Chow requires early socialization and training and probably requires an equally strong willed, stubborn owner. They have a mind of their own and will become your master if you allow it. As puppies they are naturally well behaved deceiving owners into thinking they don't need formal training. This is a mistake. When an untrained Chow reaches adolescence he may refuse to accept authority. Start training in early puppyhood. Puppy kindergarten is highly recommended.
