What to do if Your Cat or Dog Becomes Poisoned

Many things non-toxic to humans can be deadly to dogs and cats. Chocolate for example a lot of people already know is dangerous - - the dark chocolate. Chocolate toxicity in dogs can lead to seizures, vomiting, diarrhea and coma. The extreme dosages of chocolate poisoning can be fatal. The most fatal are dark chocolate and baking chocolate.

A common sugar substitute called Xylitol found in sugar-free gum, candy and many other foods is toxic to dogs, but not to cats. In dogs, it can cause low blood sugar and liver failure.

Over-the-counter medicines such as Ibuprofen, naproxen and acetaminophen cause gastric ulcers in both dogs and cats. Acetaminophen can lead to anemia in cats.

Cough and cold medicines containing phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine or acetaminophen are all dangerous to cats and dogs. Never give these medications to your cats or dogs.

ADD and ADHD prescription drugs can cause tremors, seizures, heart problems and even death in cats and dogs. Cats are highly sensitive to antidepressant medications. Cymbalta and Effexor can cause severe neurological and heart problems.

Rat poison is deadly for dogs.

Grapes and raisins contain a substance that can lead to canine kidney failure.

Oxygen absorbers: These are freshness packets included in some foods to keep foods fresh. They often contain iron which can be poisonous to cats and dogs. Don't let a dog or cat ingest these packets.

Flea products for dogs are toxic to cats; they often contain pyrethrins which can cause feline seizures and tremors.

Household plants: Lilies are a number one source of toxicity reported in cats. They can cause kitty kidney failure. If you have a cat, don't keep lilies in your house or your yard. Philodendrons and pothos can cause oral ulcers and foaming at the mouth.

If you suspect your pet has been poisoned you should:

  • remain calm
  • remove your pet from the area where the poisoning occurred
  • be sure the pet is breathing and behaving normally, if not, go immediately to an emergency clinic
  • contain the poisonous material to prevent additional exposure
  • obtain a sample of the questionable material, store in a plastic baggy for preservation and ease of transport
  • the more evidence you can supply your vet, the easier it will be to diagnose the problem and render a solution.
  • call your vet's office for guidance prior to your visit or contact the 24-hour pet poison hotline at 800-213-6680 (there is probably a fee).
  • do not induce vomiting unless your vet recommends this
  • never give pet oil, milk, food, salt or anything orally without talking to a vet first
The prognoses for poisoning is better the sooner it is reported. Never hesitate to get help as soon as possible. Immediate treatment could save your pet's life.
