Spooky Canine Superstitions

It does make sense that superstitions about dogs would crop up over time beings how we have spent so much time with them. Read more to learn about a few of the most unusual dog legends.
 Julie Ann 's Shih Tzu
Legend or Superstition: A Howling Dog Brings Death
This is one of the most common dog superstitions that can be found in multiple cultures. In Greek mythology, a howling dog was thought to be a signal that the Wind God had summoned death to a nearby home. In Norse mythology, dogs howl at the approach of Freyja, the Goddess of Death. In Welsh lore, the king of Annwn patrolled the land riding supernatural  hounds that only other dogs could see. The howling was their way of acknowledging the presence of these spooky beasts as they raced by. Hint: Don't tell your kids these kind of bedtime stories!
Facts of Dog Howling:
Dogs howl as a form of communication. Have you ever heard the orchestra of dogs howling together? One dog begins to howl, and even dogs nearby will sometimes join into the songs of howling creating a grand orchestra of howling dogs.
Dogs also howl for attention. Perhaps the howling dog orchestra is one way all dogs collaborate with each other saying: We need more attention! Other times dogs howl as expressions of anxiety and sometimes a howl is just a very loud way of saying HELLOOOOOO. Since dogs are pack animals, one dog's howl can be heard many miles away thus creating the "howling orchestra." I tend to think they all just like to hear their voices howling together in happy tunes only they the dogs understand. They could be saying HELLOOOOO to each other.
Legend or Superstition: Dogs Can See Ghosts:
If you live with a dog you probably have experienced at least "once," when it is pitch black outside, you are home alone, and in the eerie silence, your dog suddenly starts to stare at a wall, or a door with no window and starts to growl. Your eyes widened and you gasp wondering what it is the dog senses that you don't hear or see. Did the dog see a ghost? Will the ghost suddenly appear to you as well or pass through the closed door into your presence?
Facts:
Dogs do perceive the world differently than we do, however, this is hardly proof dogs see supernatural beings or ghosts. Dogs enjoy a heightened and sensitive experience of their environment beyond our capabilities. This is demonstrated by dog whistles that pick up high frequencies we cannot register, but a dog can hear, as well as dogs have a smell 10,000 more times sensitive than humans can smell.
In addition, many people report dogs appearing agitated in moments before natural disasters and storms. The theory is dogs can pick up on sensitive vibrations we miss out on. These dog capabilities help trainers to train dogs to be alert to people about to have seizures and other human dangers. The dog's heightened sense of smell also helps solve many crimes.
Legend or Superstition: Seeing Three White Dogs Together Signals Good Luck

This legend comes from an English myth that says seeing three white dogs standing together is a sign of good fortune, particularly financial luck. There is an alternate version of this legend saying good luck will come to you if you spot a Dalmatian on the way to a business meeting.

4. Seeing Three White Dogs Together Signals Good Luck
Origin: An English myth contends that seeing three white dogs standing together is a sign of good fortune, particularly financial luck. An alternate version states the same good luck will come to you if you spot a Dalmatian (pun intended!) on the way to a business meeting.
Fact: No one is quite sure where this came from. Maybe because these dogs were rare, it was more of a unique find to see them wandering the streets! Just as possible is the simple associations people make between white being a symbol of good luck and black a symbol of bad luck, an unfortunate fallacy that results in many wonderful black cats and dogs having a more difficult time getting adopted.
It is my express opinion just having a dog in the house is good luck no matter what else is said about the matter. More and more research suggests people who own pets of any kind are usually healthier and live longer lives than people who do not own pets.
I am sure there are 100's of more dog related legends and superstitions. These are just a few for entertainment purposes.

Pamper Your Pets During the Holidays

November 2018 is halfway done. The holidays will soon be here. This is the time of year our thoughts linger over how much we have to be thankful for. Many of us have a special dog companion that makes our family complete.
Most of us realize giving our dogs some of our Thanksgiving dinner is NOT the way to go. A better way to celebrate the holidays with our canine friends is to provide them with some special food and gifts right along side other family members.
For Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners consider giving your dog the treat of some healthy wet foods. Turkey and Shrimp in succulent broth, looks so tasty even you might be tempted to eat it, and the aroma is just as delightful. This meal includes some nutritious eggs and cheddar cheese. It is chock full of  healthy fats and minerals and made in the U.S.A.

• Healthy avocado, flaxseed & olive oil
• Guaranteed taurine & L-Carnitine

In fact, canines can’t resist the delightful flavor of this delicious medley, seasoned with just the right amount of basil and parsley.

Every serving of this premium canned cuisine includes optimal amounts of added vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and omega fatty acids, all to help maintain a healthy, happy body.

Serve as a complete and wholesome stand-alone meal or as mouth-watering topper for our premium kibble. No matter how you dish it out, Turkey & Shrimp in Broth is the perfect way to deliver powerful nutrition, canned feast style!
And of course, as most of us do, wrap up some dog toys and other gifts to place under the tree, so your canine companion can tear into things just like the rest of us on Christmas morning!

Cockapoo Designer Dog

A Cockapoo is one of the designer dog breeds. It is a cross between either an American Cocker Spaniel or an English Cocker Spaniel and a poodle (most cases are a miniature poodle or toy poodle). The Cockapoo has been in the United States since the 1950's. They usually have a long lifespan of 14 to 18 years.

Cockapoo

Since they are a floppy-eared breed, I recommend for best results to start this breed on an all natural ingredients herbal ear cleaner such as is offered through Life's Abundance.

Cockapoos have become popular because they generally combine the outgoing, loving personality of the Cocker Spaniel with the low-shedding, low-dander qualities of the poodle.

They are usually an active breed and thrive well in environments with lots of space for exercise. They also do well as walking, running or jogging partners. They are agile and can excel at "retrieve" games and enjoy activities such as swimming. They are very personable dogs, adoring their humans, and do not thrive well alone, or left alone for long hours at a time.

A litter may produce some pups more like the Cocker Spaniel and others pups more like the poodle, then some pups having both the looks of a Cocker Spaniel and Poodle. The same goes for personality traits.

Cockapoos may also be popular due to the variety of colors produced that include:
  • black with spots
  • black
  • tan, beige or buff
  • red, including auburn and apricot
  • brown, varying from light to dark
  • sable with tipping or shading in black
  • cream
  • white
  • silver
  • brindle
  • Roan
  • Merle
  • beige with brown and grey markings
The coat of  Cockapoo will vary from dog to dog. Most in a litter will have a coat somewhere between the Cocker Spaniel and a Poodle. It is also probable some will have a coat more similar to the sleeker coat of the Cocker Spaniel, while others may have the curly coat like a poodle. The coats are usually low shedding, grow quickly and require frequent grooming. Use Life's Abundance Grooming Products for best results.

Weight can be anywhere from 7 lbs. to 24 lbs. depending upon which parent they inherit genes of body build.

The Loyal and Independent Hanoverian Scenthound is a Hunting and Tracking Dog

The Hanoverian Scenthound  comes to us from Germany. He or she grows into a medium to large size dog who is highly efficient, well proportioned and powerful.
Hannoverscher Schweisshund

Notice his strongly muscled fore and hind limbs which qualify him for tireless work. He or she will have a broad, deep chest enabling long, strenuous chases. This dog has a slightly wrinkled forehead, clear, dark eyes producing a serious expression typical of the Hanoverian Scenthound. He is serious about his occupation in life and it is very plain to see through his expression.

The primary color of this breed is red that can vary from a pale fawn color to a dark brindle (looking almost black). source: AKC

Feed he or she a formula that caters to his unique digestive needs throughout the various phases of life. He or she should do quite well on Life's Abundance All Life Stages Formula as an adult. Feed the puppy Life's Abundance Large Breed Puppy formula.

Grooming requirements are quite low. Start an ear cleaning routine as a puppy using Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner and you should be able to keep down ear infections as this formula rids the ears of wax build-up, dirt and debris.

You will need plenty of space for the Hanoverian Scenthound to roam and play. He or she will make great hiking, camping or jogging companions. He or she will require a handler who is very self confident having a strong personality able to take on the "lead role." The independent nature of this breed might make training a little more difficult with anyone who cannot take on the Alpha role appropriately.

These dogs are in general quite healthy.
Height: 19-21 inches
  • Weight: 79-99 pounds
  • Life Expectancy: 10-14 years
