Sniff, Search and Find Treat Game

All dogs need exercise and to let go of energy. Some dogs need this more than others. It is all according to what breed you own. The "Search and Find" game can be a lot of fun for owners as well as will tire out even the most active of dog breeds.
 Mary Williamson
Start this training using treats as most dogs will happily hunt for food. As you progress with the game and training you can teach the dog to look for hidden objects like favorite toys and even "your lost items like a set of keys or cell phone." Here are the steps:
#1: Start with your dog sitting and staying. If the dog does not know this command yet, have someone else hold his leash to begin the game/training. Walk 6 foot or so away, show dog the treat, remind him to stay, put treat on floor or ground. Go back to his side and don't let him up yet, turn to the treat, then give the command "Search." Give your release command if he won't budge from the sit/stay position. Dog should go straight to the treat and eat it. Repeat this about six times. Break your treats into small bites so you don't risk over feeding treats during the game.
#2: Command your dog to sit and stay. Now...let him watch you hide a treat in his plain view anywhere you choose that dog can see you hiding the treat. If you are inside, you might try hiding it beside a favorite chair or some other object. Outside, try hiding the treat next to an outside chair, etc. Dog should run, retrieve the treat and eat it. Repeat about 6 times.
#3: Command the dog to sit and stay. Let dog watch you hide several treats in plain view. Return to side of your dog, but don't let him get up just yet, turn and face the treats, rub one of the treats you are using on a paper towel, hold the towel in front of his nose but don't let the dog eat it, just give the command of "sniff." Now give the command "Search." Dog should run out and eat the treats. Repeat about 6 times and be sure to have the dog "sniff" before each set.
#4: In this step the dog should start learning to use his nose to find the object/treat. Let him watch you hide a treat, but not in a place where he can immediately see it (like instead of in front of the chair, hide it behind the chair). Return to the dog. Don't let dog up. Turn and face the treat and give command "sniff." Then say, "search." Don't help him find the treat even if he is having trouble in order to teach him to "sniff" for the object. If dog really can't find treat, then reset the scene, hide it in an easier spot and be sure dog sees you hiding treat. Repeat about 6 times. Over time, hide the treat in harder places training him to sniff the paper towel before each set and then sniff his way to the treat.
You can progress to hiding objects/favorite toys and having him sniff his way to the objects in the same way he sniffs for the treats. This makes a great rainy day game for inside dogs!
