Shih Tzu Are Very Loving Dog Companions

What sets the Shih Tzu apart from other breeds? The Shih Tzu is mysterious and charismatic. Its charm, self confidence and alert countenance is certainly very alluring. The Shih Tzu is highly intelligent. The Shih Tzu's outgoing personality, big eyes with that warm and trusting expression is so hard to resist. Is a Shih Tzu going to be the right dog for you?

Shih Tzu Clube

First of all, the Shih Tzu want to be with their people more than anything else in their lives. They do not do well in lonely kennels or when left alone for long periods of time. They have been bred for centuries to be a quintessential companion, always at your side, always in your presence craving love and attention.

If you sit down, your Shih Tzu will want to immediately sit with you or an even better spot in the Shih Tzu's mind, would be to jump into your lap and lavish you with kisses. Your Shih Tzu will want you to pet and snuggle him. If you are eating, your Shih Tzu will either beg you for a bite or sit waiting patiently until you give him a bite. In essence, if you want a constant loving companion by your side at all times, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you.

If you have lots of time to stay home or are able to take your Shih Tzu along wherever you go, the Shih Tzu is probably right for you. By lots of time, I mean especially enough time to groom, socialize and exercise your Shih Tzu. The lifespan of a Shih Tzu is typically 11 to 15 years.

Shih Tzu are usually active, busy, curious and creative. You will need a variety of toys to help keep the Shih Tzu's mind occupied. You will need a fenced-in yard or an area where you are able to walk your Shih Tzu for exercise.

Shih Tzu are very good natured, but also very vivacious. Shih Tzu have a good sense of humor and would rather clown around than to be serious. Always keep in mind that Shih Tzu were bred to be ornamental or decorative pieces to have around, not for any particular work purpose.

A Shih Tzu thinks just their presence is enough and anyone should be pleased to just be in their presence. They are proud and arrogant with a slight stubborn streak. A Shih Tzu has a mind of its own.

The Shih Tzu is a palace-dweller. For thousands of years the Shih Tzu had addresses in such places as imperial palaces, chez Dalai Lama, and with top political figures and dignitaries homes. It was a status symbol of wealth and dignity to own a Shih Tzu.

To your small Shih Tzu companion, your safe and cozy home is its palace. Give your Shih Tzu a comfortable place to sleep (and I might add, the Shih Tzu discovers quite quickly that "your pillow" is the most comfortable spot to sleep), excellent care, high quality food and a loving family.

Your Shih Tzu could not be happier. Although their stubborn streak may appear from time to time, the Shih Tzu can be trained quite successfully. Just use consistency and patience with your training lessons.

The Shih Tzu is strictly a house pet. Shih Tzu cannot tolerate harsh weather, either too cold or too hot, especially the heat. Shih Tzu need good ventilation, fresh air and a cool, protected area in warmer climates.

Shih Tzu require careful daily grooming. Most of the hair that is shed from a Shih Tzu's coat will end up in the brush if you brush daily. They do very little shedding elsewhere. Shih Tzu are also less allergenic than most other breeds, which makes the Shih Tzu an ideal companion for adults or children who suffer from allergies and cannot house other types of pets.

Early Puppy Socialization

Teaching a puppy or a dog proper socialization skills is vital to the safety of both your dog and other dogs and people with whom he comes into contact. A properly socialized dog is a happy dog, and a joy to be around for both humans and animals. A poorly socialized  dog, or one with no socialization at all, is a danger to other animals, other people and even his own family.

Socialization is best done when the puppy is as young as possible The socialization lessons a young puppy learns are difficult to undo, and it is important to remember that the socialization skills the puppy learns will affect his behavior for the rest of his life.

A  dog that is properly socialized will be neither frightened of nor aggressive towards either animals or humans. A properly socialized  dog will take each new experience and stimulus in stride, and not become fearful or aggressive. Dogs that are not properly socialized often bite because of fear, and such a dog can become a hazard and a liability to the family who owns it.

Improperly socialized  dogs are also unable to adapt to new situations. A routine matter like a trip to the vets or to a friends house can quickly stress the dog out and lead to all sorts of problems.
Socialization is best done when the  puppy is very young, perhaps around 12 weeks of age.

Even after 12 weeks, however, it is important that the puppy continues its socialization in order to refine the all important social skills. It is possible to socialize an older  puppy, but it is very difficult to achieve after the all important 12 week period has passed.

There are some definite do's and don't's when it comes to properly socializing any  puppy. Let's start with what to do. Later in this article we will explore what to avoid.

Socialization do's

Make each of the socialization events as pleasant and non-threatening for the  puppy as possible. If a puppy's first experience with any new experience is an unpleasant one, it will be very difficult to undo that in the puppy's mind. In some cases, an early trauma can morph into a phobia that can last for a lifetime. It is better to take things slow and avoid having the  puppy become frightened or injured.

Try inviting your friends over to meet the new puppy. It is important to include as many different people as possible in the  puppy's circle of acquaintances, including men, women, children, adults, as well as people of many diverse ethnic backgrounds and ages.

Also invite friendly and healthy dogs and puppies over to meet your puppy. It is important for the  puppy to meet a wide variety of other animals, including cats, hamsters, rabbits and other animals he is likely to meet. It is of course important to make sure that all animals the  puppy comes into contact with have received all necessary vaccinations.

Take the puppy to many different places, including shopping centers, pet stores, parks, school playgrounds and on walks around the neighborhood. Try to expose the puppy to places where they will be crowds of people and lots of diverse activity going on.

Take the puppy for frequent short rides in the car. During these rides, be sure to stop the car once in a while and let the puppy look out the window at the world outside. Introduce your  puppy to a variety of items that may be unfamiliar. The puppy should be exposed to common items like bags, boxes, vacuum cleaners, umbrellas, hats, etc. that may be frightening to him. Allow and encourage the  puppy to explore these items and see that he has nothing to fear from them.

Get the puppy used to a variety of objects by rearranging familiar ones. Simply placing a chair upside down, or placing a table on its side, creates an object that your  puppy will perceive as totally new.
Get the puppy used to common procedures like being brushed, bathed, having the nails clipped, teeth cleaned, ears cleaned, etc. Your groomer and your veterinarian with thank you for this. Use Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner:

Ear Cleaner
  • Cleans ears and eliminates odor
  • Painlessly dissolves ear wax

This herbal formula contains a special botanical blend and gentle cleansers. Ear Care Formula safely dissolves waxy build-ups and effectively removes dirt and debris. Aloe vera soothes the sensitive skin of inner ears. With continued use, say ‘hello’ to healthy clean ears that smell terrific!

Introduce the puppy to common things around the house, such as stairs. Also introduce the  puppy to the collar and leash, so he will be comfortable with these items. There are of course some things to avoid when socializing a puppy. These socialization don'ts include:

  • Do not place the  puppy on the ground when strange animals are present. An attack, or even a surprise inspection, by an unknown animal could traumatize the  puppy and hurt his socialization.
  • Do not inadvertently reward fear based behavior. When the  puppy shows fear, it is normal to try to sooth it, but this could reinforce the fear based behavior and make it worse. Since biting is often a fear based behavior, reinforcing fear can create problems with biting.
  • Do not force or rush the socialization process. It is important to allow the  puppy to socialize at his own pace.
  • Do not try to do too much too soon. Young  puppies have short attention spans, and continuing lessons after that attention span has passed will be a waste of your time and your puppy's.
  • Do not wait too long to begin. There is a short window in which to begin the socialization process. A young  puppy is a blank slate, and it is important to fill that slate with positive socialization skills as early as possible.

Umbilical and Inguinal Hernias in Dogs

  • Umbilical and inguinal hernias are very common in many dog breeds.
  •  They may be congenital or acquired. In acquired hernias, there generally is some history of trauma such is at birth with the umbilical cord being cut to short or excessive pull on the cord during the cutting process.
  •  Congenital hernias involve the diaphragm or the abdominal wall.
  • There are three main types involving the diaphragm.
  • They are: peritoneopericardial where abdominal contents are found extending into the pericardial sac; pleuropetioneal, in which abdominal contents are found within the pleural cavity; and hiatal, in which the abdominal esophagus, gastroesophageal junction, and/or portions of the stomach protrude through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.

Clinical signs vary from no symptoms to severe and depend on the amount of herniated tissue and its effect on the organ it is displacing. Hiatal hernias may be "sliding" and result in clinical signs of reflux esophagitis (anorexia, salivation, and/or vomiting) that may come and go. Definitive diagnosis is done through radiology, and contrast studies are need for confirmation. Correction of all the aforementioned hernias is best done through surgery.

Hernias involving the abdominal wall include umbilical, inguinal, or scrotal. An umbilical hernia is secondary to failure of the normal closure of the umbilical ring and result in protrusion of the abdominal wall. In small animals, if the hernia is small, correction is best done at time of spaying or neutering and this is best done no earlier than 6 months of age.

Sometimes a small umbilical or inguinal hernia will have closed on its own by the time the dog reaches 6 months of age. If not, then it most usually is recommended to be closed during the sterilization process. If you are not planning to sterilize your animal, then the hernia can be repaired at 6 months of age, and preferably not before then, unless there is a medical reason to do so.

Normal Canine Births

A dog's mothering instinct to nurture begins with her first  puppy delivery. Praise your matron through labor and delivery. Try not to express disgust, fear or over excitement. A breeder's expressions and emotions can have a deleterious effect on the  mother's attitude. If you fail to offer your  mother adequate emotional support, she could, in the rarer cases, refuse care of her litter.

Whelping box

The first thing seen in a normal birth is a partial emergence of a grayish blue (slimy-looking) sac from the dog's vulva. However, I have seen many normal deliveries in which this sac does not appear. If the sac is present, do not be alarmed, and do not try to burst the sac. This sac contains the first  puppy. Usually the  is able to deliver the sac containing the  puppy onto the whelping box floor by her second contraction or third strong contraction. Remain calm. Your attitude right now can prove crucial to the mother's acceptance and care of her offspring.

Usually, but not always the dog will deliver the placenta (afterbirth) directly after each  puppy. Some dogs will turn to eat the placenta first, then go on to eat the sac, tearing it from around the puppy's face and body. As the mother ingest all evidence of a fresh birth, she will shake the new whelp still attached to the placenta by its umbilical cord.

Three events are taking place. First, instinct demands that all strongly-scented bloody evidence of a fresh birth be destroyed. In the wild, a fresh birth would attract predators to a whelping den's site. Instinct prepares the  mother to quickly get rid of all evidence of the fresh birth. Second, the placenta contains precise nutrients vital to the  mother that help to nourish her during a time when her strength is less than optimal.

Included in these nutrients are those assisting the whelping  to maintain strong contractions. Some breeders will contend the matron should not eat the placenta or at least not all of them. I believe in allowing instinct to rule and I allow my  mothers to eat all the evidence of a fresh birth. If timing is right, I may remove one placenta.

Thirdly, during these moments a  mother ingests the sac and afterbirth, she stimulates the  puppy to an independent life, toward breathing on its own. When the entire process is left to the  mother and assuming the  mother is abiding by her natural instinct, I have seen the puppies seem to become lively and thrive much better than if I have to help in the process. Not all  mothers do what they are suppose to do, and in these cases, a breeder must act quickly to save the newly whelped  puppy.

If the  mother is tending to the placenta first, you must act quickly and manually tear the sac from the puppy's head. Do not remove the puppy from its proximity to the  mother. Once the sac is torn especially away from the  puppy's face, carefully pick the  puppy up, holding it a few inches off the whelping box floor to make it easier for the  mother to crush and sever the cord. This action provides a clotting of blood coming from the cord and ties off the cord naturally. Allow the mother to grind and gnaw the umbilical cord. The grinding-crunching sound heard is that of the  mother severing the cord from the placenta.

If the  mother refuses to sever the cord within a few minutes of birthing a puppy, clamp the cord with sterilized hemostats approximately two inches from the  puppy's abdomen, and cut the cord with sterilized surgical scissors. Dot blood clotting powder on the cord to stop the bleeding (this is the same powder that is used to stop bleeding when clipping toenails). In some cases, you might need to apply some Neosporin Ointment to prevent infection around the umbilical cord.

First food to feed the mother should be a "wet" food. Feed any canned formula dog food from Life's Abundance. One my first choices is a tasty Turkey and Shrimp. This type of feeding lends a pampering touch to your matron. In a few days, switch back to Life's Abundance Puppy formula for whatever breed, large or small breed, that is appropriate to your dog. You can continue to top it off for special treats and pampering with the canned food.

Housebreaking Dogs Using a Crate

Crate training is one of the most effective ways of house breaking  puppies or dogs. Crate training is very efficient, and very effective, since it uses the natural instinct of the dog to achieve the desired result of a clean house and a well trained dog.

The concept behind crate training is that a dog naturally strives to avoid soiling the area where it eats and sleeps. By placing the dog in the crate, this instinct is enhanced. The dog will come to see the crate as its den, and it will try to avoid soiling its den.

The key to successful crate training for a  puppy or an older dog, as with other forms of dog training, is to establish a good routine. This routine will enhance the ability of the dog to do its business in the right place, and avoid eliminating in the wrong place. It is important to shower the dog with praise each and every time it eliminates in the established toilet area, and not to express frustration or anger when the dog makes a mistake.

It is important to confine the dog or puppy to a small part of the house, generally one puppy proofed room, when you are not at home. The room should contain a soft bed, fresh water and some favorite toys to prevent the dog from becoming bored and frustrated.

Crate training is different from confining the dog to one room, however. With crate training, the puppy or dog is confined to a crate when unsupervised. The idea is that the dog will think of this crate as its home, and not want to soil his home.

When crate training, it is important to remove the dog from the crate as soon as possible after returning home, and to take the dog promptly to the previously established toilet area. When the dog does its business in this toilet area, be sure to provide lots of praise and treats. It is important that the dog learns to associate proper toilet procedures with good things like treats and toys. Use Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats for good behaviors:

Tasty Rewards Training Treats

It is important to never leave the dog in its crate for long periods of time, as this will confuse the dog and force it to soil its sleeping area. The crate is simply a tool, and it should not be abused by leaving the dog in it for extended periods of time. If the dog is left in the crate for too long, it could set back the training program by weeks if not months.

The dog should only be confined to the crate when you are at home. Except for nighttime, the dog should be given the opportunity to relieve itself every 45 minutes or so. Each time the dog is taken out, it should be put on a leash and immediately taken outside. Once outside the house, the dog should be given three to five minutes to do its business. If the dog does not eliminate in this time period, it should be immediately returned to the crate. If the dog does its business during the set time period, it should be rewarded with praise, food, play, affection and either an extended walk or a period of play inside or outside the home.

During the crate training period, it is important to keep a daily diary of when the dog does its business each day. If the dog is on a regular feeding schedule, the toilet schedule should be consistent as well. Having a good idea of when the dog needs to eliminate each day will be a big help during the house training process. After the dog has used his established toilet area, you will be able to give the dog free run of the house to play and enjoy himself.

Dealing with accidents during crate training

It is very important to not punish the  puppy or  dog when it makes a mistake or has an accident during the crate training process. If there has been an accident, simply clean it up. Accidents during house training mean that you have provided the dog with unsupervised access to the house too quickly. The dog should not be allowed unsupervised access to the home until you can trust her bowel and bladder habits. If mistakes do occur, it is best to go back to crate training. Taking a couple of steps back will help move the house training process along, while moving too quickly could set things back.

Dog Kennel Designs

Many types of surfaces can be used in dog exercise yards. They all have problems to one degree or another. A very common surface covering for a dog exercise yard is crushed gravel. It keeps the dogs out of the mud and is relatively easy to scoop up droppings from the stone. Urine runs through easily, keeping it off the dog's feet.

One effective treatment for gravel exercise yards is applying dry lime. Sprinkle the lime lightly over the entire yard and then wash through the gravel with a hose. Use enough water to ensure that the top surface is free of any residue, and also to ensure that the lime solution reaches the dirt underneath where the parasites are.

Concrete patio blocks can be used as a substitute for crushed gravel in a dog exercise yard. They can even be used in addition to the gravel as a base in which the blocks rest. It is more difficult to pick up droppings from the patio blocks than from the bare gravel, but it can be done.

Another treatment for dog exercise yards is to pave the entire surface with concrete. Polish the surface of the concrete while it is drying to have a finish that will be easy to keep clean. However, a polished surface will be too smooth for the dog to run on efficiently. A brushed concrete finish is best for the dog to run on, but is much more difficult to keep sterilized. A concrete surface can easily be scrubbed down with hot water and soap on a daily basis to help prevent build-up that could cause problems for your dog.

One problem with concrete runs for a dog exercise yard is that urine does not disappear rapidly enough, which makes it possible for the dog to run through it. This quickly accumulates and forms a sticky substance on the dog's feet and the tips of the hair.

Many dog kennels maintain a large fenced running area adjacent to the regular individual kennel runs that are covered with grass. The dog is able to exercise on a softer material. The grassy areas, however, cannot be used in rainy weather, especially if you keep your dog in full coat.

Romping dogs can turn wet grassy areas into a mud field very rapidly. There is also the serious problem of keeping a grass covered area sterilized. Any chemical strong enough to destroy parasites and their eggs would also destroy the grass. In northern areas where there is severe ground freezing during several weeks of the year, the problem is less serious.

Large exercise areas are of great importance for the overall development of the dog. For any dog to develop and to maintain the proper musculature, he must have a large area in which he can run, play and romp freely.

Good joint health is crucial to your companion animal’s well being. The ability to walk, run and jump represents a large part of your pet kids unique ability to express emotion. Unfortunately, aching and stiff joints are just as much a part of aging for dogs and cats as it is for humans. In fact, tens of millions of dogs and cats experience some form of joint challenges.

Use Life's Abundance Agility Supplements to help build and maintain good joint health:

Training Your Dog NOT to Chase Moving Objects

Dogs by nature are predatory animals, and all predatory animals share the motivation to chase fleeing objects. While this may be a natural instinct, it is not appropriate when those fleeing objects are joggers, bicyclists or the mailman.

Training a dog not to chase people and bicycles is an important thing to do, and it is best to start that training as early as possible. Starting when the dog is still small and non-threatening is important, but particularly with breeds that grow very large, or with breeds that have a reputation for being very aggressive. Many people respond to being chased by a dog, especially a large dog, with understandable fear, and it is best for yourself and your that he be trained not to chase.

Some breeds are probably easier to train away from chasing than others. Breeds that have been used for hunting or herding often retain much more of their chasing instincts than other types of dogs.
No matter what breed of dog you are working with, however, it is important to not allow him off the leash until his chasing behavior has been curbed. Allowing an untrained dog off the leash is dangerous, irresponsible and illegal.

Before you expose your dog to a situation where he will want to chase someone or something, be sure to train him in a safe, controlled area like a fenced in yard. It is important for the dog to be able to focus and concentrate on you, and for him to understand what behavior you want. The dog must be given the opportunity to repeatedly perform the behavior you want while in this controlled setting.

The training session should be started indoors in the dog's home. The dog should be put on a leash and the owner and the dog should stand at one end of a hallway or a room. The owner then waves a tennis ball in front of the dog but does not allow him to touch it. After that, the tennis ball is rolled to the other end of the hallway or the room, and the command "Off" is used to tell the dog not to chase the ball. If the dog starts out after the ball, use the command "Off" once again and give a firm tug on the leash.

When doing this type of training, it is vital that the dog not be allowed to touch the ball. If he actually reaches the ball, he may think that "Off" means to get the ball. This exercise should be repeated several times, until the dog has learned the meaning of the "Off" command. When the dog responds correctly by not chasing the ball, he should be rewarded with a special treat. Feed Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats:

Tasty Reward Nutritional Treats

  • Positive reinforcement has never tasted so good
  • Perfectly sized for carrying in your pocket
  • Gluten free, no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors
  • Made in USA with Chicken and lamb from New Zealand

After the dog seems to understand his new game, move to another room and try the same thing. Repeat the exercise in several rooms of the house, in the garage, etc. After the dog has seemingly mastered the game and learned the meaning of the "Off" command, you can work with him without the leash, but still only in a safe area like your own home or a fenced in yard.

It may take some time for the dog to fully master control of his chasing instinct, and it is important not to rush the process, or to leave the dog off leash until you are sure he is fully trained.

To test the training in the real world, enlist the assistance of a friend to pose as a jogger. It is important that the dog does not see and recognize this person; he has to assume that it is a stranger in order for the test to be valid.

Stand with the dog on his leash and have your friend jog by a couple of times while you do the "Off" exercise. If the dog does as he is asked, be sure to provide lots of praise and treats such as the Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Training Treats (these are pocket size) If he starts after the "jogger" give a firm reminder by tugging on the leash.

Dog Ear and Nail Cleaning

Ear Cleaning: Cleaning the ears of your dog is a simple chore. With the dog being a long-haired breed, problems can arise if ears nor cleaned regularly. The hair in the ears of a dog will grow long, knot up, mat and eventually interfere with proper functioning of the dog's ear canal. Infection of your dog's ears can result.

Use Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner:

You will need a bottle or can of ear powder easily obtained through pet supply manufacturers. Squirt the powder directly into the ears of your dog. The hair will become dry and brittle and is easily plucked out with your fingers. Pluck the hair out of your dog's ears with a quick, firm motion until the ears of your dog look clean. You can also use a hemostat to pluck the hair out of your dog's ears.

Be sure to purchase ear canker powder as it has the additional benefit of helping to control canker and ear mites in your dog. Swab your dog's ears gently with a cotton swab dipped in mineral oil or rubbing alcohol.

Nail trimming: Keeping your dog's nails trimmed is important. Without regular trimming, your dog's nails may grow so long that they actually throw the dog off his natural balance and act as a source of irritation. Neglecting to trim your dog's nails also detracts from the look of an otherwise well-groomed dog.

Nail trimmers and techniques: Guillotine type nail trimmers are the best to use on your dog. Hold the trimmers vertically. Grasp the foot of the dog firmly, hold the leg up towards you, carefully trim each nail of your dog. It may sometimes be unnecessary to trim the nails on the hind feet of your dog as they seem to grow much slower than the fore feet.

If dewclaws are present on your dog, trim the dewclaws as well. The shorter you keep your dog's nails, the better, and frequent trimming will help tighten the feet and improve the dog's balance. Be careful about the "quick." The "quick" is a vein that can be easily observed in most white and light-colored dog when the toenails are "white." The "quick" is more difficult to identify in toenails of darker colored dog. More often that not, these are black rather than white in the darker colored dog.

Nail bleeding: If the nails of your dog bleed after trimming, or if you trim them to close to the "quick," there is no need for alarm. Always have on hand one of the antiseptic coagulants which you can purchase through any pet supply manufacturer for your dog. These substances will stop quickly any bleeding. Using a cotton swab dab a little of the powder on the bleeding toenail of your dog and hold it with a little pressure for a few seconds. The bleeding should stop quickly.

The best time to trim the nails or clean the ears is before you bath your dog so that all traces of blood or powder will be washed away. However, the nails of your dog will be softer right after bathing.

Nail grinding: A finishing touch in trimming nails is the use of a nail grinder for your dog. A nail grinder will polish off the rough edges of the dog's nails. The Oster Corporation makes a nail grinder favored by many professional groomers and handlers. Caution is advised when using a nail grinder on your dog's nails. If the dog bends his head during the process, some part of the fringes could get caught in the grinding wheel causing the dog considerable pain.

If your dog objects strenuously to nail grinding, it is advisable to not force the issue since grinding is mostly for a cosmetic effect.
