February is Pet Dental Care Month

There is a reason why an entire month is dedicated to spreading awareness about the oral hygiene of our dogs and cats: it’s an easily remedied problem with potentially dire consequences.
Every February, we celebrate National Pet Dental Health Month in hopes that we’ll reach pet parents in a way that results in a change. According to the American Veterinary Dental College, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats will need dental care by age three. This is often due to genetics, neglect or poor diet. Sadly, tooth and gum problems in domesticated animals are nothing new. In fact, two Ancient Egyptian fossils of cats showed signs of tooth decay!
Does My Pet Need a Dentist?
According to the American Dental Association, almost 80% of adults brush their teeth daily. And on top of that, it is natural for us to schedule professional cleanings into our annual calendar. Why should the standard be any less for our precious companions?

There are several warning signs of an unhealthy mouth. Some are obvious and others, not so obvious. As a pet parent, it is important to investigate your pet's mouth on a regular basis and check for the following:
  • Breath: When your pup swoops in for a kiss, do you detect a foul odor? Unhealthy-smelling breath is a good indicator of the presence of unfriendly bacteria in your pet's mouth.
  • Teeth: Lift the lip and inspect the teeth. Are they healthy white or are they coated in a brown film? If it's the latter, it means your pet is long overdue for a cleaning.
  • Gums: Color should be medium pink, although some dogs and cats will have black or gray spots on the gums, which is normal for some breeds. If the gums are bright red and angry looking, that could indicate a serious problem.

If you detect any of these warning signs, your companion animal would greatly benefit from a veterinary dental screening. But why wait for warning signs? Why not be more proactive? The combination of routine home checks, regular veterinarian checks and a quality diet could go a long way towards ensuring your pet's lasting dental health.
Head Shape & Dental Health
Believe it or not, the shape of your pet's head (particularly the size of his or her muzzle) affects tooth alignment. And why is tooth alignment important for dental health? Well, perfectly aligned teeth naturally push food particles away from gums, while poorly aligned teeth can result in plaque buildups, possibly leading to an increased chance of infection.

While poor tooth alignment is typically a genetic issue, a pet's activities can also result in alignment problems. For example, tug-of-war games with towels or ropes played often over the course of years, can move teeth from their normal position. Therefore, you might want to limit such activities.

How Do We Identify the Important Place a Dog Has In Our Life?

When we bring a new puppy into our home, what is one of the first things we try to do? Well, of course, we show them their new home, where to eat and drink water, where they will be sleeping. All these things are very important first steps to bringing a new puppy into our home and life. One other aspect, however, really defines the very important place this new puppy has in our life. Nothing illustrates the importance of this new puppy in our life than "giving the puppy a unique name."

Two important things occur when we give our new puppy a unique name. These are:

  1. the new puppy now has an individual identity that indicates "significance" in our life
  2. the new name assigns a particular sound to the new puppy as dogs come to respond to the "sound" of their name more than anything else
In the wild animals do not need individual names. Each animal knows its place within the group it was born and interacts appropriately without any vocal identifying labels. It is only in the world of people that dogs learn this small piece of receptive language.

We all know naming a new baby into the family is a very special thing. One of the first tasks God completed when he created Adam was to give Adam his name and then assigned Adam to name all other living creatures.

In many cultures the name of a person contains a special essence of that person. Speaking that name may even give someone control over that person in a magical way. In some cultures a child is given a "true name" at birth that is never spoken. The name is only known to the child and whomever gave it to prevent any kind of magical control of the child. The child is then given another name in which they will be called in their everyday life.

Only very special creatures in the animal kingdom are given "names." Let us take for instance the farmer who has cows, chickens, horses and perhaps many other animals on his farm. The farmer most usually does not name each of these animals on his farm.

When we give a name to something or someone we are acknowledging it is an individual with an identity and personal feelings. Most pet owners do acknowledge their pets as individuals. Therefore, one of the most important ways we identify this important place is by giving the dog or new puppy a unique name.

If you have ever read anything about the Eskimo culture you most likely will come across how they give names to their dogs. They believe dogs do not have a soul unless they are given a name. They give special human names to their dogs often the name of a deceased relative and only a few of their dogs are given these precious names. The dogs who receive these special names are not the dogs who pull their sleds, but the ones they take into their homes and become their pets. The Eskimos name their working dogs for identification purposes names based upon their physical characteristics. Some of these names are Gray, Blackie, Long Tooth, Spotted Tail Runner, Braveheart.

 Buffalo Bully Sticks
Buffalo Bully Sticks help reduce tartar and maintains dental health.

Regardless of how you choose to name your new puppy, keep in mind, this is a very important decision, just as important as naming a new infant just born into your family. The new name will identify the important place this puppy/dog has in your life.

Even though the name of your new friend is extremely important, more important is what you feed he or she. Many pet owners today are highly concerned about what their dogs are really eating. Commercial foods made in large batches and within facilities of many hands are far more likely to come in contact with "something" you would not personally feed your dog. This is why Life's Abundance cooks their dog food products in "small batches." They practice safety considerations second-to-none and boast the fact of NEVER have a recall on any of their products. This ensures your precious new family member stays happy and healthy, just as happy and healthy as a newborn baby that just arrived into your home.

Dog Talk: Increase Your Dog's Vocabulary

It is quite apparent nature did not give the dog ability to speak as humans speak. However, never underestimate the ability of the dog's ability for their own language as well as understanding our language.

Whether our native language is English or German our dogs have great ability to learn exactly what we mean by simple words (without extensive professional training) such as:

  • Collar on
  • walk time
  • drop it
  • find the glove and more
  • repetition of words and phrases is key
What is the language of the dog? We know deaf people are able to use signs rather than sounds as their form of language. The dog has no ability to have facial flexibility, the voice box, and the voluntary control needed to create human speech sounds. It is still possible dogs can use other ways to communicate. And we as dog owners must never underestimate the receptive language ability of our dogs. Just because they are unable to produce human sounds to communicate with us does not mean they do not comprehend human words. The dog can obey a spoken command or produce an intelligent or appropriate behavior in response to our spoken message.

People who have lived with dogs know they quickly learn to respond to a number of human words. It is easier than we realize to increase the vocabulary of our dog companions. The words and phrases our dogs learn reflects the owner's lifestyle and the way owners interact with their dogs. Words and phrases dogs understand also depends upon their age and present level of training as well as the breed of dog. Some breeds are just plain more word and phrase intelligent than other breeds.  Consider some of the following seemingly complex phrases in which any dog can learn the meaning thereof:

  • who wants a cookie?
  • who wants to go for a walk
  • Where's your ball?
Teaching your dog the words and phrases reflecting your unique lifestyle is quite easy and loads of fun. Increase their vocabulary and enhance your relationship with each other.

In addition to communication skills, pet owners are increasingly concerned about what their pets are really eating. This is why Life's Abundance cooks dog food in small batches with safety considerations second-to-none, which ensures your pet stays happy and healthy. As we learn to communicate more effectively with our dogs others are learning how we can keep them happy and healthy for years of enjoyment. Life's Abundance has a record of "no-recalls" of any of their dog products.

Dog Folk Tale: Truth is Far Better

I find folk tales about anything intriguing. One folk tale about dogs that always captured my attention is the one about King Solomon.

This traditional story says King Solomon had a silver ring that bore his seal and the true name of God. This ring gave him the ability to understand and to speak with animals. The folk story goes on to tell us when King Solomon died this silver ring was hidden in a great house with many doors.

Just imagine having a special ring that gave you the ability to speak with your dog. Fact is all of us can learn to communicate with our dogs with or without a special silver ring. The true magic is having an understanding of how animals communicate. We can go a little further here and imagine that the house of many doors is actually research on the subject that then allows us as pet owners to learn how to communicate even more effectively through training techniques and more.

Life with anyone, animal or human is always more satisfying and less confusing when we can communicate with each other effectively.

What makes up the language of dogs?

  • a vocabulary all his own using his eyes, tail, ears, face and body language
  • even a grammar of his language is apparent and can be learned by humans so we can translate the ideas the dog is trying to transmit
  • dogs speaking to other dogs
  • how dogs understand messages from humans
Dogs communicate the truth of their feelings and wants in life. Humans, whether we want to admit it or not, are often deceitful in what we communicate to others, which makes our life with each other uneasy, uncomfortable, and more confusing. Dogs are not the same. I think this one fact is basic to why humans sometimes love their dogs so deeply.

Leonardo Da Vinci once said:

"Man has great power of speech, but the greater part thereof is empty and deceitful. The animals have little, but that little is useful and true; and better is a small and certain thing than a great falsehood."

Of course, it is impossible to have deep or profound conversations with our dogs such as discussions about natural history, moral philosophy or our favorite Hollywood films, actors and actresses. On the other hand most dog owners will agree their communication and relationship with their dog is often richer with emotion and feelings than their relationships with family and friends most likely just because everything our dogs communicate to us is absolute TRUTH.

One story comes to my mind now about my Dog Duke who was waiting patiently at the door for me one night as I battled through the worst weather rain storm of my life trying to drive a short distance back home.

Duke knew I was in trouble and when I opened the door, there he sat ready to tell me just how worried he was about me and how happy he was that I was now safe at home. I understood it all completely. I knew he did not tell me one lie about his feelings.

As a result of this incident our love for each other increased. His welcome was worth more to me than had it been my own father sitting at that door waiting upon my safe arrival home (and that occurred several times as well). Incidentally had it been my father, his welcome would have been a strong scolding as well. Duke did not scold me. He only showed me how much he was worried about me and how much he loved me and how much he was glad I was back safe at home with him now.

Communication with our dogs is simply priceless. Wouldn't you agree? It is a language we learn as we live with them from day to day. The many doors within science helps people to learn how to communicate with our dogs in ways that helps us all live happier with them through appropriate training and conditioning techniques.

If you are a pet owner, you are probably just as concerned about what your dog is really eating. This is why Life's Abundance cooks dog food in small batches with safety considerations second-to-none, which ensures your pet stays happy and healthy.
