Dog Talk: Increase Your Dog's Vocabulary

It is quite apparent nature did not give the dog ability to speak as humans speak. However, never underestimate the ability of the dog's ability for their own language as well as understanding our language.

Whether our native language is English or German our dogs have great ability to learn exactly what we mean by simple words (without extensive professional training) such as:

  • Collar on
  • walk time
  • drop it
  • find the glove and more
  • repetition of words and phrases is key
What is the language of the dog? We know deaf people are able to use signs rather than sounds as their form of language. The dog has no ability to have facial flexibility, the voice box, and the voluntary control needed to create human speech sounds. It is still possible dogs can use other ways to communicate. And we as dog owners must never underestimate the receptive language ability of our dogs. Just because they are unable to produce human sounds to communicate with us does not mean they do not comprehend human words. The dog can obey a spoken command or produce an intelligent or appropriate behavior in response to our spoken message.

People who have lived with dogs know they quickly learn to respond to a number of human words. It is easier than we realize to increase the vocabulary of our dog companions. The words and phrases our dogs learn reflects the owner's lifestyle and the way owners interact with their dogs. Words and phrases dogs understand also depends upon their age and present level of training as well as the breed of dog. Some breeds are just plain more word and phrase intelligent than other breeds.  Consider some of the following seemingly complex phrases in which any dog can learn the meaning thereof:

  • who wants a cookie?
  • who wants to go for a walk
  • Where's your ball?
Teaching your dog the words and phrases reflecting your unique lifestyle is quite easy and loads of fun. Increase their vocabulary and enhance your relationship with each other.

In addition to communication skills, pet owners are increasingly concerned about what their pets are really eating. This is why Life's Abundance cooks dog food in small batches with safety considerations second-to-none, which ensures your pet stays happy and healthy. As we learn to communicate more effectively with our dogs others are learning how we can keep them happy and healthy for years of enjoyment. Life's Abundance has a record of "no-recalls" of any of their dog products.
