How Do We Identify the Important Place a Dog Has In Our Life?

When we bring a new puppy into our home, what is one of the first things we try to do? Well, of course, we show them their new home, where to eat and drink water, where they will be sleeping. All these things are very important first steps to bringing a new puppy into our home and life. One other aspect, however, really defines the very important place this new puppy has in our life. Nothing illustrates the importance of this new puppy in our life than "giving the puppy a unique name."

Two important things occur when we give our new puppy a unique name. These are:

  1. the new puppy now has an individual identity that indicates "significance" in our life
  2. the new name assigns a particular sound to the new puppy as dogs come to respond to the "sound" of their name more than anything else
In the wild animals do not need individual names. Each animal knows its place within the group it was born and interacts appropriately without any vocal identifying labels. It is only in the world of people that dogs learn this small piece of receptive language.

We all know naming a new baby into the family is a very special thing. One of the first tasks God completed when he created Adam was to give Adam his name and then assigned Adam to name all other living creatures.

In many cultures the name of a person contains a special essence of that person. Speaking that name may even give someone control over that person in a magical way. In some cultures a child is given a "true name" at birth that is never spoken. The name is only known to the child and whomever gave it to prevent any kind of magical control of the child. The child is then given another name in which they will be called in their everyday life.

Only very special creatures in the animal kingdom are given "names." Let us take for instance the farmer who has cows, chickens, horses and perhaps many other animals on his farm. The farmer most usually does not name each of these animals on his farm.

When we give a name to something or someone we are acknowledging it is an individual with an identity and personal feelings. Most pet owners do acknowledge their pets as individuals. Therefore, one of the most important ways we identify this important place is by giving the dog or new puppy a unique name.

If you have ever read anything about the Eskimo culture you most likely will come across how they give names to their dogs. They believe dogs do not have a soul unless they are given a name. They give special human names to their dogs often the name of a deceased relative and only a few of their dogs are given these precious names. The dogs who receive these special names are not the dogs who pull their sleds, but the ones they take into their homes and become their pets. The Eskimos name their working dogs for identification purposes names based upon their physical characteristics. Some of these names are Gray, Blackie, Long Tooth, Spotted Tail Runner, Braveheart.

 Buffalo Bully Sticks
Buffalo Bully Sticks help reduce tartar and maintains dental health.

Regardless of how you choose to name your new puppy, keep in mind, this is a very important decision, just as important as naming a new infant just born into your family. The new name will identify the important place this puppy/dog has in your life.

Even though the name of your new friend is extremely important, more important is what you feed he or she. Many pet owners today are highly concerned about what their dogs are really eating. Commercial foods made in large batches and within facilities of many hands are far more likely to come in contact with "something" you would not personally feed your dog. This is why Life's Abundance cooks their dog food products in "small batches." They practice safety considerations second-to-none and boast the fact of NEVER have a recall on any of their products. This ensures your precious new family member stays happy and healthy, just as happy and healthy as a newborn baby that just arrived into your home.
