Housetraining Puppies Means Giving Your Pet Plenty of Chances to do the Right Thing: Here's How

Housetraining a puppy means "you do not give your puppy the chance to make mistakes." Training consists of giving the puppy lots of chances to do it right. Simply said, yet not necessarily and always an easy task. It is a task that can be successfully accomplished with every puppy if "training" is appropriate and successful.

Training actually means making a consistent commitment to manage your pup's behavior 24 hours per day until he or she is old enough to be trusted with house freedom for increasingly long periods of time. Don't blame your puppy if you fail to train properly!
The following basic 3 step procedure will train and/or change any dog/puppy behavior (if applied correctly and consistently). Housetraining is one of the most crucial behaviors of all dog training for your puppy or dog to live at peace and harmony as a new family member. Take it as serious as the food you choose to feed.
  1. Envision within your mind the behavior you want by creating a mental image of what the end result of your training will achieve. In the case of housetraining, it is for the puppy or dog to consistently and reliably go to the bathroom in any designated toilet spot YOU choose. This step is important because you need to be able to see it clearly in your mind to successfully train the puppy or dog to do it. This takes some creativity, not on the part of the animal, but on YOUR part as the trainer. If there is one thing I really dislike hearing from people it is, "that dog just could not be housebroken." This is not true at all. The entire procedure and success of the procedure depends upon YOU, the trainer and not the dog.
  2. Never reward the animal for behaviors you do not want. Always reward  the animal for behavior you want instead. This step also requires YOU as the trainer to manage the animal's behavior so he or she does NOT have the opportunity to be self rewarded by going to the bathroom in spots you do not want him to go. Give the animal plenty of chances to do it correctly and when the correct behavior appears, reward them with a nutritious and tasty treat every time. Of course there will be mistakes. Do not punish or make a big deal out of the mistakes, but give the animal less opportunities to make mistakes and many, many more opportunities to do things the correct way, always rewarding the correct behavior with a nutritious and tasty treat. He will eventually forget about the incorrect behavior.
  3. Help your dog or puppy to do it right consistently and reward the right behavior consistently. Go outside or to the spot with the animal and be ready to reward and lavish great praise upon him when he performs correctly. He will learn to be happy to please you because it always brings him great affection, praise and tasty reward treats. Don't just let him lose in the back yard and then give him a treat when he returns inside the house. You really don't know if he did the right thing or not. Coming back in the house for his treat may be the behavior he learns the greatest instead, so he waits by the back door for you to open it, let him back in and he gets his treat, so then he proceeds to pee on the rug inside instead.
The old fashion suggestions of rubbing your dog's nose in the mess or smacking his face with the newspaper are inappropriate and abusive. Don't fall into these old ways of doing. You will fail as the trainer and the dog will never learn what it is he is really suppose to do.
