The Cute Canine Behavior of Head Tilting: What does it mean?

Have you seen your dog tilt his head to one side? I have seen this many times. What does it mean? It is as if they are perplexed about something and just wondering "what the heck is going on?" It is cute and oh so sweet looking. I always smile to see my dogs tilt their head to one side as if in a sudden questioning mode. I usually respond with something like, "you are so cute."
According to some animal behaviorists dogs probably tilt their head to one side for many different reasons including trying to get a better view of YOU or trying to hear you more closely. Each time you respond with a smile or a sweet statement, it probably reinforces the behavior and you will begin to see the behavior more often even though it a spontaneous reaction from your dog in the beginning.
It might be that the dog does have a bit of a problem "hearing" you or even "understanding" you. I honestly think one of my dogs who does this is having a hard time understanding something about me.
He is curious about me and almost like in awe of me. He is the one who jumped in my lap and buried his head in my left arm when I first got the shingles virus pain. He knew exactly where the pain was. He looked up into my face and showed me compassionate eyes. I could him saying, I feel so sorry that you are in pain and right here is where it hurts. Right?
Dogs are notorious for having keen hearing. So why would a dog have to tilt its head to hear better? I really think it is to get a better "understanding" of YOU more than to actually hear your spoken words.
I think it is a tilt of keen curiosity about YOU. I reinforced his behavior by a smile and "baby talk," which indicates a joyous feeling I feel for him. I also believe he tries to get a better eyesight view of me.
If you like this cute behavior, here are some ways to positively reinforce the head tilting. Ask questions such as:
  • do you want a cookie?
  • do you want a treat?
  • do you want to go for a walk?
  • do you want to go for a ride in the car?
After you ask the question, then reward the dog with whatever your questions asks. For example, do you want a treat? Give your dog a tasty and nutritious treat such as one of those offered through Life's Abundance. Try them all to find out which one your dog likes best and use that particular one each time you want to reinforce this behavior. Check out the Sampler Pack:

If your question is, "do you want to go for a ride in the car?" Immediately after asking the question get the things together for you and your dog and go for a ride in the car. Soon, you will find your dog trying to gather up his things to get ready to go for a ride in the car.

To make it more fun, decide what you would like for your dog to gather up and then watch him in action when you ask the question, "do you want to go for a ride in the car? When the dog gathers up his gear, reinforce the behavior even more with praise and perhaps a treat at this time as well. Then, head out for your ride in the car.

Dogs repeats behaviors that are rewarded. Our positive reaction to the head tilting will increase the "cute tilting of his head."

A word of caution here might be if you see your dog persistently tilting its head that seems to be related to not much of anything at all, consult with your vet to find out if there is another cause such as an ear infection or something wrong with his eyes. Otherwise, if it is just in cue to some of the things I have discussed here, just enjoy this heartwarming and cute canine behavior.
