Dog Napping is on the Rise: How Can Your Dogs Stay Safe?

We are living in a time in history in which dog theft is on the rise. Dog napping is another term often used for this crime. It is something most pet owners don't want to think about and may not even think about. In this article I will share some tips to help you keep your dog safe from dog napping.
Why do people steal dogs? It is most usually to make a "quick buck." In other cases it could just be to have a nice beautiful pet the thief could not afford otherwise.
Dog flipping is a dog napping technique involving people who take dogs from their owners' homes or offices, claims to be a lost dog's owner, or gets dogs from shelter with the intention of reselling the dog. Just imagine the heartbreak this brings to a family and/or pet owners.
Types of dogs stolen the most include:
  • high value dogs of any kind such as bulldogs, shih tzu, yorkies, chihuahuas and more
  • small breed dogs of high value that are easy to grab and run fast
Situations that pose a high risk for dog theft include:
  • people who take their dogs on simple errands
  • leaving your dog alone in a car, it just takes a matter of minutes for dog thieves to smash the windows and get away with your dog
  • in some areas it is not uncommon to leave dogs tied up outside a storefront, which creates perfect opportunities for dog theft
  • leaving dogs unattended in a backyard even with fences poses a problem if there are dog thieves around as they can climb the fence and be off with your dog in a matter of minutes
  • leaving a dog off leash while in parks, leashes often provide safety nets for dog owners keeping the dog safe by owner's side
Tips for keeping your dog safe from dog napping/theft:
  • micro chip your dog and keep contact information up-to-date
  • keep it quiet about where you live, places you go frequently with your dog or even how much you paid for your dog as thieves will search for a high-value dog to steal
  • if your dog is stolen, immediately report it to the police, call your micro chip company and lost-dog or stolen-dog lists or databases online, include local shelters
  • start distributing flyers EVERYWHERE
  • announce the loss on social media
  • be aware of the different situations where your dog could fall victim to being stolen
  • some radio stations may help out making the announcement of a stolen dog
