Two common methods of teaching a puppy to sit are called:
- Capturing
- Luring
Capturing Method:
- Hold some treats in your hand and stand in front of your puppy
- When puppy sits to get his treats, say "yes" and give puppy a treat.
- Step backwards or sideways. Puppy should now stand up following your lead.
- Now wait for puppy to sit.
- Give another treat as soon as puppy sits.
- Repeat the above several times.
- After a few repetitions of the above, begin saying "sit" right as he begins to sit.
Luring Method:
- Get down in front of the puppy while you hold a treat for luring.
- Put treat right in front of pup's nose
- Slowly lift food above puppy's head.
- Puppy should sit as he lifts his head to nibble or try and catch the treat.
- Let the puppy eat his treat as soon as puppy's bottom touches the ground or floor.
- Repeat the above routine one or two times.
- Now remove the food and use your empty hand while continuing to reward the puppy after he sits.
- When puppy understands the hand signal to sit, begin saying "sit" right before you give the hand signal.
Note: Avoid physically putting your puppy into the sitting position as this can be confusing or upsetting to some dogs.
