Teach Your Dog To Accept Ear Cleaning and Ear Medication

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to give your dog ear drops without a fuss, and without a fight? It can be done.

Westie pups
There comes a time in every dog owner's life in which they will need to medicate their dog's ears. If you can teach your dog to accept this practice you both will be happier campers together. The lesson learned will also help you to keep your dog's ears squeaky clean and smelling fresh.

Not everyone is blessed with cooperative dogs. For those of you who are not, read on for a minute or two.

Step 1: Build a positive association with the ear medication or ear cleaner. I recommend you starting the day you bring your puppy home. Start with an ear cleaning routine that will help you when and if the time comes you need to administer medication.
Life's Abundance distributes a superior ear cleaner formula. You just have to try it for yourself to see what I am telling you is truth.
  • Cleans ears and eliminates odor
  • Painlessly dissolves ear wax
  • No alcohol means no sting
  • Made in the USA
This herbal formula contains a special botanical blend and gentle cleansers. Ear Care Formula safely dissolves waxy build-ups and effectively removes dirt and debris. Aloe vera soothes the sensitive skin of inner ears. With continued use, say ‘hello’ to healthy clean ears that smell terrific!
Gentle enough for puppies and kittens over 12 weeks of age.

Directions:
Shake well. Gently apply enough drops into the ear canal so that it is moistened. Massage the base of the ear canal to help loosen wax. Remove liquid, dissolved wax and dirt with cotton or facial tissue. Clean applicator tip thoroughly after each use. Do not use cotton swabs or insert pointed objects into the ear. Use two times daily. If condition does not resolve itself after 4-5 days, see your veterinarian. For routine cleaning and maintenance, use 1-2 times weekly or as needed.

Step 2: Make it a point to handle the ear cleaner bottle several times per day where you dog can see. Put the bottle of cleaner on table or counter where the dog visits daily. Toss out several small treats to your dog. The dog may not pay much attention at first. Keep busy. Ignore the ear cleaner bottle and your dog. When your dog eats the treats, still allowing your dog to see what you are doing, move the ear cleaner bottle to a new location in the same room. Then toss out more treats. Change locations and repeat the process. Use any of the Life's Abundance Dog Treats you find your dog likes best. Practice this exercise.

Step 3: Perform a similar exercise. Hold the ear cleaner bottle in one hand while offering treats. You might try presenting the bottom of the bottle and ask the dog to touch it with his or her nose before earning a treat. Practice often.

Since cleaning the ears or applying medication requires many different steps such as:
  • reaching for the ear
  • touching the ear
  • lifting the flap if your dog has droopy ears
  • exposing the upper end of the ear canal
  • handling the ear cleaner bottle
  • correctly aiming the nozzle
It is probably necessary to break these steps down into separate lessons rewarding your dog for each of the steps along the way will make it less stressful for you both.

Step 1: Thoroughly investigate the ear with some tasty treats within reach. Put your dog in a sitting position. Now reach for one ear. You want your dog to remain sitting as your hand makes contact with the ear. If the dog remains calm, mark the moment with a clicker or a short verbal marker such as YES, OR GOOD. As your hand makes a quick contact with the dog's ear immediately deliver a treat. Repeat this exercise 4 to 8 times.

If your dog resists the above exercise, start with an easier step of just reaching toward but not touching the ear or gently touching the ear with one finger and not the entire hand. You want your dog to think about this and feel as though "this is easy and not painful, but just easy and fun, I even get treats for this." Go onto the next step when your dog allows these initial steps.

If the dog remains calm while you touch its ear, reach for the ear and lift the flap to show you the inner ear. Repeat this 4 to 8 times. Now...reach for the ear, lift the flap and quickly handle the ear so you can get better contact with the ear canal. Mark and reward the behavior you are after. Repeat 4 to 8 times.

Step 2: Now add the solution bottle. Repeat the previous steps while holding the closed bottle in hand. Mark and reward each step along the way.

Step 3: Concentrate and focus upon your task at hand. Go through the motions of applying the liquid with the cap on. Mark, reward and repeat several times.

Step 4: Now administer the ear cleaner for real. The difference here will be only a gentle squeeze of solution. Mark and immediately offer several small treats given one at a time. If your dog is alarmed by the direct solution try soaking a cotton ball and let the solution trickle into the ear from the cotton ball.

Step 5: Quickly go through the easier steps above in reverse order to end the session, and continue to reward your dog along the way.

Step 6: Now take your dog on a favorite trail walk or engage he or she in a favorite activity such as tug of war or fetch. You can even feed your dog a special meal. I always consider "wet foods" special meals. Try the Life's Abundance canned variety foods  such as their Canned Turkey and Shrimp in Broth for this final step.
