Random Object Recognition Brain Training for Dogs

Dogs need brain stimulation just like us humans do. Fun brain games are an excellent way to strengthen the bond between you and your dog. Stretch the training out over days and weeks. Don't give up if your dog does not learn everything in a few tries. Take as long as it takes to teach him correctly. Like humans, dogs learn at different speeds. Keep the sessions short and fun. Provide the dog with plenty of nutritious and tasty treat reinforcements to keep him interested. Here are some simple steps to follow:

  1. Gather up your objects in advance. You can use toys or items that mean nothing to him like an ordinary pencil, coffee cup or canned goods. Just look around your home and choose items at random. You might be better off to choose items difficult for him to put in his mouth. A pencil might not be a good idea for every dog, whereas, for some, it might be. There are plenty of random objects you can use for brain stimulation lying around all over your house. You of course want to avoid teaching him inadvertently behavior you don't want such as triggering a game of chase after something. Larger items can be easily targeted with his nose.

  2. Get into a proper sitting position with your dog. Command your dog to sit or lie down and then  sit on the floor face to face with him.

  3. Place one of the items on the floor directly in front of him. Place the item close enough that the dog can reach it with his nose. As soon as he leans towards it to sniff it, click with a clicker (for clicker training) or simply say YES with plenty of gusto and instantly give him a treat. Life's Abundance provides some excellent tasty and nutritious treats I highly recommend for "object recognition brain training." They are Tasty Rewards Training Treats

  4. A dog new to random object recognition training will require patience. Reward even the slightest movement of his nose towards the object to encourage curiosity and interaction with the object.
  5. Notice the moment your dog targets the item with his nose and immediately give the item a name. Say the name of object as he is leaning toward it. For example, if it is a coffee cup, say "Coffee Cup" just before he touches the cup with his nose. Use your clicker or say YES with gusto and give the reward treat. Repeat the sequence several times so the dog hears the name of object, "Coffee Cup" often. You want him to associate the word with the object.

  6. After many repetitions of saying the name of the object, marking/rewarding the dog for touching the object with his nose, move onto a second object. Keep the first object and a new object on the floor in front of your dog. He should begin to explore the first object with  his nose. IGNORE THIS AND DO NOT MARK OR TREAT. Simply say the name of the object, "Coffee Cup" or whatever your first object was. Give your dog a moment to think about it, then mark/treat for touching the first object.
  7. Move the two objects to a new location, even just a few feet away from where you were a moment ago will work fine for this step. Place these first 2 objects about two or three feet apart and give your dog a cue to go touch the first object. Your cue of course will be the name of the first object, which in my example, I am using a "Coffee Cup." Mark and reward the dog if he goes to the right object.
  8. Add a third object to your brain training game, however, continue to ask your dog to identify the very first object presented to him (the Coffee Cup).
  9. Start the entire process over again to name another item having only the new item to be named in front of your dog. Say the name of the new object just before he touches it, mark and reward when he completes the action correctly. Repeat this action several times so he associates the object with its name, for example, "small box." Keep your patience and you will be able to place more than one named item on the floor and ask your dog to touch the object by name. For example, "touch the Coffee Cup." Always mark and reward when he gets it right. Remember: Learning these exercises of discriminating between items by name can take a lot of repetition for some dogs, and others may learn to play the game quickly. This is a brain game that should be enjoyable for you and the dog. There is no hurry to learn, but always a challenge to see how many objects you can teach your dog to name.
