Choosing the Right Dog Collar

Choosing the right collar for your dog to wear depends upon the type of dog, your personal taste, training goals and needs. There are safe and dangerous collars. This article gives a quick review of both types.

Dangerous collars are designed to work through the application of pain, discomfort or aversive sensations. The kind are:
  • choke chains
  • prong collars
  • shock collars
  • citronella spray collars
  • any other kind of collar designed to "force" compliance
Recent studies tell us old-fashioned, force-based training methods work, but also come with a great risk of causing injury and creating behavior problems.
Today we value dogs who are confident, not fearful, and calm, not aggressive. We want our dogs to "offer behavior" which is seldom accomplished using the old fashion behavior-suppressing methods. Training your dog using behavior-suppressing methods are not good training philosophies.
Head halters or head collars come in many different varieties and brands. Head halters and head collars give the handler a lot more physical control of the dog's head. Of course, where the head goes, the dog's body must follow. A dog who pulls on a leash while wearing a conventional collar will find it difficult while wearing a head collar.
The greatest fault with head halters and head collars is that the majority of dogs just plain do not like them. Any collar a dog does not like consistently is not a force-free training collar even without the prongs or shock treatments. If the handler is skilled in properly conditioning the dog to a head collar or halter it is very possible some dogs learn to accept them and become reasonably comfortable with them.
Perhaps the dog just learns to shut down the undesirable behavior while stressed by the head collar stopping the unwanted behaviors. He has not learned to show you behaviors you want and/or enjoy more in order to earn rewards from you. Don't surprised to find that your dog is one of the many dogs who never accepts this type of collar training. If you don't know what you are doing while using these collars you can severely injure your dog.
Slip lead/show lead/loop lead collars are often used in:
  • animal shelters and rescues
  • conformation showing
This type of collar can tighten without limit and has the potential for choking dogs. They are acceptable for quick movement and brief use. For extended use you should use a flat collar or front-clip harness. Since show dogs are usually trained to walk with their handlers, while the collar sometimes look tight, it is unlikely this is the case. They all function the same and all have the same potential to choke a dog and cause trachea damage if the dog pulls hard and persistently or if the handler jerks on them.
Some of the safest and best collars to use are:
  • flat collars
  • martingale collars
  • safety or breakaway dog collars
  • dog collars for unique situations
Keep in mind that even the best collars have potential to cause harm to your dog if not used correctly. Safe collar use includes:
  1. Never leave a collar on an unattended dog
  2. Never leave collars on playing dogs
  3. Pay attention to dangling tags that can catch on crate wires or heater vents
