Buying dog toys can be a lot like buying toys for your kids. You most likely want the best you can find and want the proper toy for each intended activity. Simple criteria for buying balls might include:
- an irresistible quality that attracts the majority of dogs
- is the ball durable; you want to purchase balls that will last through hours of playtime keeping the dog happy and occupied
- is the ball safe
The price tag is of course something to consider, however, if you can find a ball that is durable able to last for quite some time, it might be better to pay a little more than buying a cheaper one that won't last long.
Consider "how" your dog like to plays with a ball. Not all dogs like to play fetch with balls. Some dogs like just mouthing around on balls while other dogs like pushing them around the house or yard.
It is fact, however, a ball is best for fetch playing. They "bounce," which provides an opportunity for the dog to leap and catch them in the air. Balls also roll since they are round. An intelligent dog can find ways to amuse himself when there is not a human around to play fetch. Think what fun it must be for the dog who can drop a ball down the stairs, off the sofa or porch or down a slope outdoors, then run like the dickens to fetch it back to himself.
Balls also make good batting material. A dog can bat the ball with a paw and make it roll under furniture.
When comparing balls to discs, balls offer the dog many more types of games to play. They might not fly through the air as well a disc, but face it, balls are better at a number of other things which makes them a better bargain in the long run.
The variety of different types of balls is endless. You have just plain balls and then balls with extra features such as:
- squeakers
- crackly material inside
- some are firm while others are more flexible
- some balls glow in the dark
- some balls dispense treats
When choosing balls for your dog consider safety first. If a ball seems a little small in your dog's mouth, it might pose a choking or swallowing risk.
Many products can be chewed up. If the pieces are swallowed, they pose a risk of choking or gastrointestinal problems.
Preference for USA made with chemically inert materials is also best. If you cannot find out what the ball is made of, just pass it up for another ball purchase.
Another important consideration is while playing fetch with your dog in areas where there is NO risk of the dog following a bad bounce into the street or into a river of swift running water.
My first dog gave me a fright while walking around a lake of water. She was on leash and suddenly ran out "almost" into the water after the ducks floating in the water. She almost pulled me in after her. Luckily I was strong enough to hold tight and luckily the leash didn't break, but stopped her right at the edge of the water.
Even more important than finding the right toys and/or balls for your dog is feeding the right foods. Dogs in general love to chew.
