They stand nearly 28 inches at the shoulder as adults and often weigh more than100 pounds. The large head, alert expression and muscular frame all at a glance create quite the intimidating creature. The Cane Coso was bred as guard dogs for centuries. Their appearance, of course, is their first line of defense against intruders. The Cane Corso requires a lot of exercise as well as extensive socialization and training from an early age. They are affectionate to their owners and bond closely with children and family.

The Cane Corso  was known only in southern Italy prior to 1988 and considered rare.
