Teach Your Puppy or Dog To Sit and Stay on Command

It is so nice to have a puppy who obeys the "stay" command. It is even nicer when your puppy obeys the "stay" command plus the "release command." A puppy who learns these commands is exhibiting "duration behavior." The goal in teaching your puppy to sit and release the sit upon command is a goal well worth accomplishing. Add distance to your training once the puppy learns the basics of this routine.
  1. Teach the release word first. Very important is to choose a word you will use and be consistent using that word. The word can be something like "Okay" or "Free" or even "Up Now." Whatever command word or phrase you choose is fine. The key is to remain consistent. Don't say "Okay" one time and the next time say, "Okay Up Now." Keep your command words and phrases exactly the same every time.
  2. Stand with your puppy in a sit or a stand.
  3. Toss out a treat on the floor or ground. I recommend using Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Training Treats.
  4. Say your command word or phrase as puppy steps forward to get the treat.
  5. Repeat the above a few times until you can say the word first and then toss the treat AFTER he begins to move to teach the puppy that the release command means to "move your feet."
  6. When the puppy learns the release command and to sit on command, put puppy in a sit turn and face puppy, then give the treat.
  7. Wait a few seconds, and give him another treat for staying in the sit position.
  8. Gradually increase the time period you wait between giving treats. You can time yourself with a watch or you can count numbers in your head. Be consistent in the time periods you wait as well.
  9. If the puppy gets up before you give the release command, know that this is perfectly fine. It only means he is not ready to sit for the period you specify, so then, you need to go back to a shorter time period in which puppy can obey, and start the gradual waiting times over again.
  10. Once your puppy sits for several seconds, start adding distance.
  11. Place puppy in a sit and say your command for "staying in the sit," take one step back, then step back to the puppy and give a treat plus your release command.
  12. Continue building as you keep it easy enough that your dog can stay successful.
  13. Practice the routine both facing him and walking away with your back turned.
  14. When your puppy can stay the time you specify, gradually increase the distance. Do the same for the "sit command."
  15. Don't expect too much, too soon.
  16. Short and successful training sessions yield the best results.

Teach Your Puppy to Sit

Two common methods of teaching a puppy to sit are called:
  • Capturing
  • Luring

Capturing Method:
  1. Hold some treats in your hand and stand in front of your puppy
  2. When puppy sits to get his treats, say "yes" and give puppy a treat.
  3. Step backwards or sideways. Puppy should now stand up following your lead.
  4. Now wait for puppy to sit.
  5. Give another treat as soon as puppy sits.
  6. Repeat the above several times.
  7. After a few repetitions of the above, begin saying "sit" right as he begins to sit.

Luring Method:
  1. Get down in front of the puppy while you hold a treat for luring.
  2. Put treat right in front of pup's nose
  3. Slowly lift food above puppy's head.
  4. Puppy should sit as he lifts his head to nibble or try and catch the treat.
  5. Let the puppy eat his treat as soon as puppy's bottom touches the ground or floor.
  6. Repeat the above routine one or two times.
  7. Now remove the food and use your empty hand while continuing to reward the puppy after he sits.
  8. When puppy understands the hand signal to sit, begin saying "sit" right before you give the hand signal.

Note: Avoid physically putting your puppy into the sitting position as this can be confusing or upsetting to some dogs.

Teach Your Dog Loose Leash Walking

A well trained dog is a joy to own. Training a dog to walk on your left side with his head even with your knee while you hold the leash loosely is a professional skill termed: "Heel."
Training a puppy to walk politely on a loose leash without pulling can be a little more relaxed. Your goal is to train the puppy to walk politely on a loose leash without pulling. Instead of using the word "heel," your training command can be:
  • let's go or
  • forward
The goal is to create a routine of easy walking together.

Choose your favorite command word before starting to train, and be sure to use the same command consistently. Decide which side you prefer your puppy or dog to walk on, the left or the right; this decision is completely up to you. The main thing is to remain consistent in all you do.

Training begins:
  1. Be sure your puppy is comfortable wearing the leash. Most dogs react to a leash as if it feels a little strange and some will try to remove the leash or bite at it. This is a normal reaction. Just imagine someone putting a collar and leash around your neck for the first time. You probably would tug at it trying to remove it because the new gear is a foreign object. Don't give in to the dog's persistence to remove his leash.
  2. Give your puppy or dog a treat when he or she accepts the leash without resistance.
  3. Stand next to your pet with the leash in a loose loop and give him several treats in a row for standing or sitting next to your leg. Of course, you should NOT treat if the pet objects to this step. Only give treats for the behavior you desire.
  4. Take one step forward and encourage the pet to follow by giving another treat as he or she catches up with you.
  5. Continue giving treats at the level of your knee or hip as you walk forward.
  6. When the pet runs in front of you, turn in the opposite direction, call out his name, reward the pet with treats when he comes to you.
  7. Continue on. Begin giving treats spaced out like from every step to every other step, then every third step and so on.
  8. With enough repetition your pet should start to walk happily at your side whenever on the leash.
  9. Allow the pet to explore his immediate environment of flowers, grass, etc. while on your walks. After they sniff the flowers on the side of street or whatever it is took their interest, give them the command, "Let's Go! Use a very happy voice as you give this command and reward them with treats for coming back into position and walking with you.

For best results I recommend using Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats.

  • Positive reinforcement has never tasted so good
  • Perfectly sized for carrying in your pocket
  • Gluten free, no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors
  • Made in USA with Chicken and lamb from New Zealand

Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.
Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised chicken and lamb.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors..
With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

Breeding Dogs is Art, Science and 100% Complete Devotion.

Breeders receive all types of calls from potential buyers. Conversations between a breeder and caller revolve around:

  • does the breeder have the right animal for caller
  • the home situation is evaluated
Calls from potential buyers can range from very welcome to extremely scary. For example a very welcome call might be, a potential buyer calls and says "we lost our beloved dog companion at age 15." "We are lonesome and now ready for a new puppy to enter our home."

A scary call might sound like this: "We own 4 pit bulls, and would like to add a small dog for our little girl who just now turned four years old." Scary because a home with 4 Pit Bulls may not be at all suitable for a tiny Yorkie to take up residence regardless of how much the little girl needs a small dog companion. In these cases, most breeders would think twice before placing a little Yorkie in a home with 4 Pit Bulls.

Pit Bulls are usually wonderful family pets when raised and trained correctly. This fact is something you as the breeder would have a hard time evaluating. The potential of harming a smaller dog intentionally or in play is great regardless of how well the Pit Bull is trained.

What is the best way to handle potential buyers who are not a good fit for the breed of dog you raise? You don't want to discourage them from interest in your breed. The best response might be simply to discuss why your small dog breed "might" not be the right dog breed to add to their family at the time in question.

Offer encouragement to the potential buyer. Point out other more suitable breeds the family might consider. Even this blog could be a resource you could refer your callers to learn about other dog breeds that may be more appropriate for their family.

The breeders you will find on this blog are 100% devoted to their breed and can give you loads of information about their particular breed. They realize dog breeding is an art, it is a science and a profession in which they have to protect the dogs they raise and place them only in homes where their complete safety and potential happiness exists.
