Charitable Work is an Important Mission of Life's Abundance

Charitable work is at the core of the Life's Abundance mission. Every order placed contributes to homeless animals. The work is done through the non-profit branch of Life's Abundance.

The Dr. Jane Foundation provides financial support to small and medium size rescue groups who work to prevent animal homelessness, abuse and chronic neglect. They made this commitment because they understand the need, which is so huge, that any animal lover would be overwhelmed knowing the huge numbers of homeless, abused and chronically neglected animals. At least we as animal lovers who purchase Life's Abundance products can feel as though we are contributing to the help for these helpless animals.

We are in an era where many shelters self-identify as "no kill," yet it is shocking to find out that euthanasia is still responsible for the deaths of nearly three million dogs and cats every year.
There is an alarming number of between 5 and 7 million animals entering shelters every years.
Help in any form for this worthy cause is incredibly worthwhile. The rescue groups the Dr. Jane Foundation and Life's Abundance supports use very effective strategies. Since 2007, they have awarded funding to more than 100 deserving groups. Your purchases of Life's Abundance products helps to make this possible.

Most of our grant recipients utilize one or more programs that have proven successful in curbing pet overpopulation and reducing the number of pet kids euthanized. These initiatives include low-cost spay and neuter surgeries, trap-neuter-return, management of feral cat communities, affordable adoption feeds and community education efforts regarding proper care of companion animals and the dangers of animal abuse and neglect. In addition there is day-to-day activities going on by committed rescuers to place their animals in loving adoptive homes.

Breaking Chewing Problems in Dogs

If you want to break your dog from destructive chewing behaviors start with some basic obedience training. Teaching a dog the fundamentals of the dog-human relationship is the foundation for further more specific training. You want to be sure you and your dog understands each other as you maintain a daily relationship with each other.

It is important your dog understands that you are in control and the alpha figure of the relationship. In addition, the dog must be able to trust you knowing that you will be fair and dependable. Basic obedience training includes:
  • walking at your side on leash
  • sitting upon command
  • staying in a sitting position until told can get up
  • laying down on a dog bed when asked
  • and more
Once your dog learns these simple and basic commands he also learns that you are in control.

Begin training with a 3 to 4 week basic obedience course. When your dog begins to respond well to basic commands of sit, lay down, and can walk on a leash without pulling begin to correct destructive chewing.
What kind of chewer is your dog? There are 3 basic reasons a dog chews destructively. Each one has a different way of approaching for correction. Three basic reasons your dog chews destructively:
  1. he chews out of anxiety: He will chew on different kinds of items, items really important to you, items not so important to you, items you had under your bed and forgot about. This kind of chewer does not seek out a particular item. An anxious chewer chews during stressful situations, during a car ride, when you leave the house, if he is bored or not getting enough exercise and stimulation
  2. teething chewer: Even after puppyhood is gone these chewers continue chewing and is not particular about what he chews on. This kind of chewer is usually easier to break as he chews because the pressure feels good on his gums and teeth.
  3. dominant chewer: Will pick up all kinds of things, but particularly loves to chew on things that are valuable or important to you such as your cell phone or favorite pair of shoes. This is your most serious kind of chewer. Seek professional help for this kind of chewer.
For the teething chewer work on cleaning, massaging their teeth and gums giving them items to chew on specifically designed for this purpose.
For the anxious chewer: Crate the dog when you are not able to watch it carefully. Purchase acceptable chew items. Do not purchase toys that your dog can chew and tear apart. Put the dog in the crate with the acceptable chew item. For this, I truly recommend one of Life's Abundance chew treats that are nutritious plus long lasting. Porky Puffs would be a good choice.

They are easily digestible and therefore a safe alternative to rawhide, which can cause choking, throat irritations and potentially dangerous intestinal blockages.
Since the digestive system is the first line of immune defense, treating your dog to a Porky Puff won’t put a strain on his or her health, like other highly-processed products on the market today. You’ll feel better providing a treat they’ll love, while helping to maintaining a healthy digestive system. And Porky Puffs are appropriate for dogs of all ages.
Give your sweet pup something to be truly thankful for – yummy Porky Puffs! Porky Puffs is an excellent long lasting chew perfect for breaking the anxious chewer.
When you are able to be with the dog and/or watch him carefully, let the dog out of the crate, and allow the treat to be always accessible. The moment you find your dog chewing on something inappropriate, say in a loud, firm tone "NO" and pick up whatever the item is, take it away, then instantly provide the acceptable chew toy or treat. Continue this for 5 to 7 days, each day giving your dog more and more time unsupervised. If you find that while  unsupervised your dog chewed up something inappropriate, decrease the unsupervised time until he gets it right.

Dog Owners are More Active than Those Without Dogs

There are millions of dog owners in the United States and if you are one of them chances are you are more active than most people without dog companions at home. There are several other potentially heart protecting benefits of owning dog. They are:

  • dogs provide love, companionship and a sense of purpose that helps propel you every day to walk outside in the sunshine, or in the fresh air all year round when possible
  • studies show dog walkers walk an average of 20 more minutes per day and took about 2,700 additional steps when compared with people who did not have a dog at home
  • most of the extra exercise shown in these studies was done at a moderate pace, defined as 100 or more steps a minute
  • most of the dog owners in the studies show adults were meeting the recommended amount of physical activity each week
  • dog walks offer more than a fitness boost in that you are more likely to connect with people in your neighborhood that otherwise you would not
  • taking your dog to parks, the woods, or another green space may also help relieve stress
  • back home, petting your dog and gazing into its eyes triggers a release of the feel-good hormone oxytocin
All the above helps to contribute to healthier hearts. source: Harvard Heart Newsletter
