Breaking Chewing Problems in Dogs

If you want to break your dog from destructive chewing behaviors start with some basic obedience training. Teaching a dog the fundamentals of the dog-human relationship is the foundation for further more specific training. You want to be sure you and your dog understands each other as you maintain a daily relationship with each other.

It is important your dog understands that you are in control and the alpha figure of the relationship. In addition, the dog must be able to trust you knowing that you will be fair and dependable. Basic obedience training includes:
  • walking at your side on leash
  • sitting upon command
  • staying in a sitting position until told can get up
  • laying down on a dog bed when asked
  • and more
Once your dog learns these simple and basic commands he also learns that you are in control.

Begin training with a 3 to 4 week basic obedience course. When your dog begins to respond well to basic commands of sit, lay down, and can walk on a leash without pulling begin to correct destructive chewing.
What kind of chewer is your dog? There are 3 basic reasons a dog chews destructively. Each one has a different way of approaching for correction. Three basic reasons your dog chews destructively:
  1. he chews out of anxiety: He will chew on different kinds of items, items really important to you, items not so important to you, items you had under your bed and forgot about. This kind of chewer does not seek out a particular item. An anxious chewer chews during stressful situations, during a car ride, when you leave the house, if he is bored or not getting enough exercise and stimulation
  2. teething chewer: Even after puppyhood is gone these chewers continue chewing and is not particular about what he chews on. This kind of chewer is usually easier to break as he chews because the pressure feels good on his gums and teeth.
  3. dominant chewer: Will pick up all kinds of things, but particularly loves to chew on things that are valuable or important to you such as your cell phone or favorite pair of shoes. This is your most serious kind of chewer. Seek professional help for this kind of chewer.
For the teething chewer work on cleaning, massaging their teeth and gums giving them items to chew on specifically designed for this purpose.
For the anxious chewer: Crate the dog when you are not able to watch it carefully. Purchase acceptable chew items. Do not purchase toys that your dog can chew and tear apart. Put the dog in the crate with the acceptable chew item. For this, I truly recommend one of Life's Abundance chew treats that are nutritious plus long lasting. Porky Puffs would be a good choice.

When you are able to be with the dog and/or watch him carefully, let the dog out of the crate, and allow the treat to be always accessible. The moment you find your dog chewing on something inappropriate, say in a loud, firm tone "NO" and pick up whatever the item is, take it away, then instantly provide the acceptable chew toy or treat. Continue this for 5 to 7 days, each day giving your dog more and more time unsupervised. If you find that while  unsupervised your dog chewed up something inappropriate, decrease the unsupervised time until he gets it right.
