How Often Should You Bath Your Dog?

Have you noticed how dogs have different coats of hair? Watch the dogs in the show ring or just watch pets walking down the street in your neighborhood. You will soon realize what a wide variety of hair and coat types every dog has. Even dogs that do not require a lot of daily grooming have to be kept clean and healthy using the right kind of shampoo and other grooming products.
How often should you bath your dog?
This will depend upon the breed and coat specific needs. You want to look for a shampoo formula especially designed to benefit the kind of coat your dog has.
When shopping for a shampoo formula it is a good idea to keep in mind the ingredients in the formula. You don't want to add harsh chemicals to your dog's body and coat as they do penetrate through and into the dog's system causing possible health problems you would not have to deal with otherwise.
Dogs with fine or thin fur or hair such as Chihuahuas and Basenjis often have a single-layered coat and no thick undercoat. It makes sense that these dogs with thinner coats may be more sensitive to hot and cold environments. It also makes sense they will need a shampoo that will be kind to their fine coats. A single-coated dog does not need baths as frequently as other breeds with thicker coats. When you do bath these dogs it makes sense to use a shampoo that will condition their skin and coat, leave them clean and shiny without any residue.
Dog breeds with a medium-density coat such as the Poodle, Rottweiler, Coton De Telear, and Cavalier King Charles may have an undercoat. For the most part, their coats are normal to medium, not too thick, not too thin. Use a shampoo that lathers up quickly and nicely and then a thorough rinse. These dogs often require bathing at least every two weeks.
The fluffy coats and those with double coats require a lot more grooming and baths. Breeds such as the Shih Tzu, the Pomeranian or Bernese Mountain Dogs need a mild shampoo with conditioning properties to help condition their thick coats. You want to use a shampoo paraben and dye free, formulated to prevent itching and help retain the skin's healthy essential oils.
In all the cases an excellent choice is Life's Abundance Revitalizing Shampoo.
