Teaching Puppies for Future Agility Competitions Tips

The canine obstacle course of dog agility involves the dog going through a tunnel, over jumps, and around weave poles. It is fun to watch and fun to do.

Pure breed and mixed breeds may participate in agility. They must be at least 15 months of age. Don't wait until your dog reaches this age to start prepping for agility. Young puppies can benefit from age-appropriate agility training and preparation.
Choose agility prep activities appropriate for your puppy's age to reap the full benefits. Introduce puppies to foundation exercises and low-level equipment. It will prepare them for full-height obstacles once they are older. These activities will also help to build a human-canine bond and will teach puppies how to learn.
Agility participation boosts a dog's self confidence which is particularly important for young puppies. One of the greatest components of socializing puppies is helping them become comfortable with the world around him. Train a puppy to conquer the tunnel or walk across a low board and you will boost his confidence tremendously. The puppy thinks in its mind: "Wow, I did that." It really is a big accomplishment for puppy that helps build their confidence.
Avoid ever saying "no" to your puppy. Instead, reward his positive behaviors while ignoring negative ones. Puppies do well with reward treats such as Tasty Reward Nutritional Treats from Life's Abundance.
All the self confidence puppy will gain will help boost abilities on the agility field as your dog will need to run the course off leash and use independent skills.
Teaching self control is another important skill for puppies to learn and is essential for future agility competitions. Train your dog in self control by teaching them to wait for permission before taking things out of your hand. Teach them they must wait until you release them to take the treat from your hand. Then move onto using toys. This is a good way to teach  your puppy self control.
Another good way to teach self control is to teach your puppy to go to his bed for rest when he is released to go.
Introduce your puppy to new surfaces as this is an important part of socialization and agility competition. Remember running across dog walks, through tunnels and other various surfaces may feel strange to their feet. You can prepare them for these strange feeling surfaces by introducing them as  young puppies to various surfaces. Do this by:
  • putting crinkly tarps on the ground for them to run over
  • climbing different types of stairs such as wooden, carpeted or slick surface stairs
Introduce a puppy to these surfaces slowly while using lots of positive reinforcement with tasty and nutritious treats such as Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats.

Moving surfaces are also important for a puppy to learn to walk upon such as a wobble board. Try teaching your puppy to put his paws up on something.

Basic behaviors for future agility competitions are:
  • knowing how to sit, the command down and to stay.
The above tips should give you a pretty good start training your puppy for future agility competitions.
