Steps to take to Help Prevent Separation Anxiety

Separation anxiety is a problem for dog owners all over the world. When you understand and recognize separation anxiety you can take steps to solve it and/or prevent it. Separation anxiety usually affects young dogs. You can take steps to prevent it from ever showing it's ugly face of symptoms.
Symptoms of separation anxiety include:
  • may act as if he or she is scared to death to be in the house alone which for the dog is equivalent to a panic attack
You can start right away laying a good foundation for your new puppy to hopefully avoid separation anxiety. This includes:
  • appropriate puppy training
  • socialization
  • crate training
  • teaching your puppy to enjoy himself alone
Separation anxiety can be a serious condition that goes way beyond sad crying and whining. The dog may become so upset he or she will find objects in the house to destroy while waiting for your return. It is not the same as being bored and/or just being a mischievous puppy. Separation anxiety is a real time of stress for your dog. Imagine how you feel while having a panic attack. I doubt you would destroy objects in your house, but you would be experiencing extreme emotional pain.

Be sure you separate potty accidents and destroying objects from it just being result of inadequate training. Some dogs train readily while others will take much patience. If inadequate training is the problem, take steps to train more efficiently.

True separation anxiety symptoms are:
  • behaviors like pacing, whining, or trembling while you are gone or as you are preparing to leave
  • a lot of barking or howling
  • chewing and digging especially around doors and windows
  • potty accidents
  • excessive salivation, drooling or panting
  • desperate and prolonged tries to escape from his or her confinement that sometimes ends in serious injuries
Causes of separation anxiety might be:
  • never previously being left alone and a traumatic separation such as happens sometimes with abandoned dogs into shelters
  • a single traumatic event such as the family's home being robbed
  • personality may play a part such as a dog who is very clingy as opposed to more independent dogs
  • a sudden switch in schedules and routines
  • a move to another house or apartment
  • a sudden absence of a family member by divorce or death or even a child leaving off to college
  • lack of daily exercise
There are many things that may trigger separation anxiety. It is far better to work on prevention.

Goal is to resolve the dog's underlying anxiety by teaching the dog to enjoy or at least tolerate time being left alone. Teaching your dog to be content alone should already be top of your list the minute a new puppy enters your home. Make this a part of your puppy's routine. See my other article on how to teach a dog to be content alone here: "Teach Your Dog How to be a Happy Camper at Home Alone."

Be sure to include appropriate exercise for your dog breed. All dog breeds are different. Some may do fine with a walk around the block with you, while others will require a lot of open space to run on their own.

If you have a puppy who is too clingy, teaching the puppy to be without you in short time periods while you are still in the house usually works. You can also find how to do this in the above article.

Sometimes diffusing calming essential oils in the room where your dog is confined helps to soothe them just the same as it helps humans.

If all your training fails, consult with your vet about keeping medication on hand to give to your dog when you leave or for additional treatment plans.

Life's Abundance does not require people to purchase product just to get paid for promoting product. This is one of the unique aspects of being in the network marketing company of Life's Abundance.

Most other companies will require YOU to purchase at least $100 of products just to gain commissions on hard work you do to bring in other customers and reps to the company. They pay you for promoting and bringing in more business to the entire whole and DO NOT REQUIRE YOU to purchase products monthly that you might not even be able to use.
