The Faithful, Family Oriented and Dependable Greater Swiss Mountain Dog

The Greater Swiss Mountain dog was first developed in the Swiss Alps mating large mastiff types brought to Switzerland. The breed is large and heavy boned with great physical strength. He is agile enough to perform all purpose farm duties as was the original working role. This breed loves being part of the family and normally is quite calm, sociable and dignified.

The coat is a beautifully striking tricolor of black, red, and white. The head and muzzle typically have a white marking called the blaze which gives this dog a "sweet expression." Several big mountain-dog breeds are called majestic.

The Greater Swiss Mountain dogs do well on a variety of diets. Do not overfeed. Use a high quality dog food formula such as those offered through Life's Abundance.

They are a double coated breed that are basically wash and wear. A bath every two weeks is sufficient followed by a thorough brushing with a rake or shedding tool. Use high quality grooming products such as those offered through Life's Abundance. Do not overlook cleaning the ears. Use Life's Abundance Gourmet Dental Treats to help keep the teeth clean.

They require moderate exercise, a walk around the block or a good romp in the woods satisfies their daily exercise needs. The breed is very suited for people looking for a hiking companion. They respond well to training using food rewards. They might present you with a stubborn streak now and then, however, careful and consistent training can overcome their stubborn streaks.

This breed does not have specific  health disorders, but can have health problems that affect large-breed dogs.
