Watching T.V. Peacefully With a Barking Dog

Some dogs watch T.V. while others just stand and bark at it. Barking dogs on T.V. may start an orchestra of barking in your home as well. If the barking is annoying to you consider some of the following suggestions.

Dog3
Above: 8 week old Newfoundland Dog Breed. The Newfoundland dog full grown is a large working dog that can be either black, brown or white-and-black. In Canada, the country of their origin, the correct colors are either black or Black and White. They were originally bred and used as working dogs for fishermen in the Dominion of Newfoundland. They are known best for their GIANT size, intelligence, tremendous strength, loyalty and calm dispositions.

Figure out what it is that triggers the dog's barking. If it is just occasional and/or specific and visual only, you can probably calm him down by blocking his view. If not, the dog may be better off crated during T.V. watching time.

I had a dog one time who could not stand to hear telephone rings even on T.V. The ringing of a telephone would send him into some kind of alert phase barking session.

Your dog's triggers could be anything and everything. A dog who responds negative all the time to T.V. is usually better off entertained in another room.
Bellalagotto1
Above: Lagotto Romagnolo Dog Breed. The Lagotto Romagnolo comes from Romagna, a sub-region of Italy. The name means "Lake Dog from Romagna" originating from the Italian word lago meaning lake.  The traditional role of a Lagotto was to function as a gundog or more specific a water retriever.

Give him a long lasting and nutritious chew during your favorite programs. The dog may be so interested in the chew treat he or she will not even respond to other stimuli including T.V. while chewing. Try the Life's Abundance Porky Puffs chew treat for dogs. This chew treat is a safe alternative to rawhide chews.

Lower the T.V. volume. Your volume may be too high for the dog's sensitive hearing and overwhelming.
Do you have ear phones to your T.V. If so, this would be a good time to use them. There is a such thing as dog ear muffs originally designed to protect the dog's hearing in small planes or in other abnormally noisy areas. You can probably find a pair easily from an internet search. Sunglasses for dogs is another option if the triggers are visual.
If all else fails get yourself a container of the Life's Abundance Tasty Reward Training treats.
Set your T.V. at low volume. Sit on the sofa or chair with your dog on leash at your feet or sitting next to you on the sofa, just wherever is his normal hang out spot with you at the T.V. As soon as he notices something that triggers the barking feed him a treat (you should break these treats down to small, very small tidbits, you don't want to overfeed with the treats of course). As you feed a tiny bite of the treat you will draw his head and attention toward you. The goal is to begin feeding before he has a chance to bark or respond to the trigger on T.V. If you miss the exact moment, go ahead and feed him a tiny bite treat anyway.
Feed a few treats, then take a pause and allow your dog to look back at the screen....now....feed again. Continue this until the bark-inducing figure has left the screen. Relax. Wait for the next opportunity to divert the dog's attention from the T.V. trigger to bark to you and the treats. You might even try this with his own kibble instead of the treats if it gets to be too many treats at one sitting!
The above procedure done consistently will gradually get your dog glancing at you for treats when triggers to bark come on the T.V. Once this is accomplished, gradually wean him off the treats at the higher rate delivery to an occasional full size treat as you watch T.V. together.
I hope these suggestions help you and your dog companion watch T.V. together with peace!
