The English Setter Gundog with a Unique Speckled Patterned Coat

The English Setter is part of the Setter family of dogs which includes the red Irish Setter, White Setters and black and tan Gordon Setters. You will find the English Setters to have a medium length long silky coat of fringes on the back of the legs, under the belly and on the tail. The body is mainly white. The coat of an English Setter is unique with flecks of color referred to as "belton."

The English Setter's purpose or main role in our life is to hunt for game such as quail, pheasant an grouse. They will hunt methodically for the airborne scent of its prey. The English Setter bred for show will generally be of a different build and more coat.

The English Setter is said to be gentle but at times strong-willed and mischievous. He should stand from 24 to 27 inches depending upon the sex of the dog. The eyes should be dark and with a kind, gentle expression. They have a long muscular neck and strong powerful hindquarters.

The English Setter's standard temperament is best described as a "Gentleman by Nature," although as mentioned above they can be strong-willed and mischievous especially if coming working/field breeding lines. They are energetic, people-oriented dogs will suited to family life that intends to give them lots of attention and activity. They are said to be particularly happy with children. English Setters are said to be very intelligent and can be trained to do just about any task another breed can do with the exception of "herding." Their natural bird instinct tends to distract them in outdoor environments. Use positive reinforcement training methods using treats and praise works best with this breed of dog.
