In German, Dachshund means "badger dog." They are known well for their long and low bodies. If you are looking for an eager hunter that excels in both above and below ground work, the Dachshund should serve you well. He is also said to be "fun" to have around.



The Dachshund comes in 3 different coat varieties:

1. smooth
2. wirehaired
3. longhaired

They can be a miniature size or a standard size with a somewhat active energy level. He is highly intelligent and bores easily. You will need to keep him busy. He is known to have a spunky kind of a personality.

You will need to supervise him with children and other dogs. Grooming needs are occasional and shedding is seasonal. Train him appropriately and he will respond well.

The miniature Dachshund stands about 5 to 6 inches and weighs 11 pounds and under. The standard size Dachshund stands around 8 to 9 inches and will weigh about 16 to 32 pounds full grown. If taken care of properly and has no congenital issues, you can expect the Dachshund to live 12 to 16 years.

He was an eager hunter so be aware he can be a bit stubborn and may seem to wonder why you are not in line with his plans for the day. Basically, this is an upbeat kind of dog. Fans of the Dachshund say he is fun to have around. He is curious and friendly.
