Canine Pregnancy Complications: What To Expect and What You Can Do

Dogs experience pregnancy complications. Two complications are:
  • resorption
  • abortion
Resorption: Your bitch's breeding pattern has been normal and is followed by actual signs of pregnancy, then suddenly, it is all gone. A breeder becomes heart broken and you wonder what happened. This happening is also sometimes called "phantom" pregnancy. In these cases, it is possible the bitch had a resorption of her litter.

Bitches conceive many fertilized eggs and resorb fetuses as a matter of nature until the size of her litter is within her ability to carry and whelp. When this process goes wrong, the resorption period of time can continue until the entire litter is resorbed. Usually there is no discharge or discomfort noted as an outward sign this is going on.

A bitch may experience resorption of her entire litter due to injury, illness, medication or hormonal problems. It will  usually occur before mid term and the owner may not even know for sure their bitch even became pregnant. In these cases, your vet should be able to determine whether the bitch conceived and why the resorption of her litter occurred. As a breeder you probably should remove this particular bitch from your breeding program as the condition could be hereditary and you don't want to pass this onto other puppies in the future should she conceive and have a normal litter.

Another complication to having a normal litter once the bitch is bred is abortion. In fact, canine miscarriages have been said to be extremely rare. Infection, injury, malnutrition or hormone imbalance may cause the loss of a litter. Abortion can occur any time from mid-term to the fifty-sixth day. The bitch usually suffers little discomfort because abortion usually occurs before the fetuses reach full size. The most your bitch will suffer from an abortion is "grieving and fretting" over the lost babies. As always if you see bleeding or colored vaginal discharge before your bitch is due to deliver consult with your vet. After an abortion, take y our bitch's temperature for about a week. Elevated temperature can indicate retention of fetuses or afterbirth which can cause further complications to your bitch and should be attended by your vet.

If your bitch looses a litter and is in apparent grief over the loss, try to pamper her with special treats, food and gentle grooming sessions providing her with as much of your attention as you can give.
