The Appenzeller Sennenhunde Also Known as the Appenzeller Mountain Dog

It is speculated by dog researchers the Appenzeller Sennenhunde descended from a mix of Roman and Germanic breeds. The Romans, long considered as great dog breeders, ruled a Switzerland territory for several centuries. As Rome's power faded, German tribes settled in the region bringing with them Pinscher farm dogs.

Dashing in to a cow to nip at its heel is how the Appenzeller controls the cow. This breed's ears are small and triangular, set high and hangs down against the dog's cheeks. These dogs are medium to large in size and are very active working dogs. They should be well socialized early in life with other dogs and people. Provide them with regular activity and training if they are to be kept safely as a pet. As a whole they are a very healthy dog breed. A lifespan on the average of 13 to 17 years is not uncommon.

They are a lively, high spirited, athletic dog who are generally suspicious of strangers. They are not recommended as an apartment dog, as they need plenty of fenced in and secure space to exercise. They were originally kept primarily as a cattle herding dog and flock guardian or a general farm dog. This breed is well known for their ability to both herd and guard with devotion that they would give their life to protect their charge.

Today, they are primarily kept as companion dogs and excel in agility/flyball competitions and obedience competitions. They are also still used as working cattle dogs. They are of very high intelligence and learn quickly.
