The Affectionate, Confident and Bold Gordon Setter Dogs

The Gordon Setter Dogs are the largest of the setters. Males might stand 27 inches tall and weigh nearly 80 pounds. They develop a stunning, glistening black coat with tan markings having long hair on the ears, belly, legs, chest and tail. They were bred to withstand their homeland's tough terrain and foul weather.

Gordon Setters are known as the "black avenger of the Highlands." They are a substantial bird dog named for a Scottish aristocrat. These dogs make great outdoor companions as they are athletic, bold, confident and resolute in the field. Take them home after a day outdoors and notice how sweet and affectionate they can become by the fireside.

Nutrition:

It is NOT recommended to feed a Gordon Setter food high in protein (over 26  percent). Health issues can result with rapid growth on a diet high in protein. Life's Abundance has a high quality formula with right at 26 percent in protein that should be perfect for the Gordon Setter. It is called All Stage Dog Food, which means you can start the Gordon Setter puppy out on this formula and feed it straight through the senior years.

This breed is at risk for "bloat." Owners should never exercise the dog one-half hour before or after feeding.

Grooming:

You will need to brush the Gordon Setter dogs at least weekly to prevent matting. Use the Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist to comb through mats, to untangle the coat and keep it smelling fresh plus "shiny." I also recommend using all their Pet Care Products. They provide an excellent ear cleaner, a shampoo with fresh scent kiwi and mango and a soothing mist for sensitive skin. Bath them monthly and use the Bath Fresh Mist in between the baths.

You might also try Life's Abundance pet friendly and family safe floor wash. This is an excellent product:

Life's Abundance Pet Safe and Family Friendly Floor Wash

  • Secret ingredient - microbial grease digestant
  • Effectively rids dirt, grime & odor
  • Safe on tile, carpet, trash bins hampers & more
  • One bottle makes up to 64 gallons of floorwash

The Gordon Setter Dogs job roles include:

  • hunting
  • and serving as nannies
You will find they love to cuddle by your side or at your feet and equally love just as much running in a field. They are genetically inclined to run and will require lots of opportunities for exercise. They can live apartment life, but if so, you will need to give them daily exercise walking, jogging or biking, hiking, mountain climbing, etc

Training:

Teach them a few simple lifesaving training commands as mandatory on your schedule. Gordons can be stubborn yet also very soft and loving and like most dog breeds they  love to please their human owners and companions.

Health:

Gordon Setter dogs are in general healthy dogs. Cancer has been documented as the most common cause of death in senior or elderly dogs of all breeds.

Responsible breeders always screen their breeding stock for conditions common to their breed

The Friendly, Intelligent and Devoted Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is a muscular and sturdy dog. Adults will be medium size. These dogs are famous for their dense, lustrous coat of gold, hence, "Golden Retriever."

Breed Hallmarks include:
  • friendly
  • intelligent eyes
  • short ears
  • straight muzzle
Watch them move with a smooth, powerful gait and a feathery tail. Lovers of this breed call them in motion, "a merry action."

Record books kept from 1835 until about 1890 by the gamekeepers at the Guisachan, estate of Lord Tweedmouth at Inverness-Shire, Scotland are the most complete records of the development of the Golden Retriever. The records were released to public in Country Life in 1952 by Lord Tweedmouth's great-nephew, the sixth Earl of Ilchester who was a historian and sportsman. The published material had been left by his ancestor providing factual confirmation to stories that had been handed down through generations.

Typical personality traits of a Golden Retriever include:
  • outgoing
  • eager-to-please family dogs
  • relatively easy to train
Their joyous and playful approach to life seen in puppyhood continues throughout adulthood. They are bred to retrieve waterfowl for hours on end. Swimming and fetching are their natural pastimes. He is an exuberant Scottish gundog of great beauty who stands among America's most popular dog breeds.

They take their job role in our human life very seriously. Some of the job roles to humans include:
  • workers at hunting and field work
  • guides for the blind
  • used in search-and-rescue efforts
  • enjoy obedience and other competitive events
You will find the Golden Retriever has an endearing love of life when not at work.

Feed them a high quality dog food appropriate for age (puppy, adult or senior) such as those offered through Life's Abundance. I recommend starting a Golden Retriever puppy on the Life's Abundancy Agility Supplement as well:

The ability to move freely and comfortably is crucial to your companion animal’s well-being. Unfortunately, aching and stiff joints are often a symptom of growing old for them as well as us. And some breeds are simply more prone to these issues and need extra support.

Typical supplements treat the joint as an isolated target. This approach proves inadequate because joints are part of a complex, interdependent system. To effectively address joint health, grain-free Agility Formula supports the entire musculoskeletal system.

This formula helps maintain healthy joint cartilage and connective tissue, and to aid in the production of healthy synovial fluid, which lubricates the joints. This supplement features Glucosamine, MSM, sea mussels and hyaluronic acid. Agility Formula is a holistic, multi-action joint support formula containing scientifically tested ingredients.

Glucosamine helps maintain and promote joint and connective tissue health. It has been shown to be essential in the healthy development and ongoing maintenance of connective tissue and synovial fluid. Research studies indicate that Glucosamine supports healthy joint flexibility, mobility and lubrication. Methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) is a natural source of organic sulfur, integral to many body functions and particularly vital to the maintenance of a healthy musculoskeletal system.

Sea mussels also contain Chondroitin Sulfate, which works in tandem with Glucosamine. And hyaluronic acid (from kollaGen II-xsTM) helps to keep cartilage strong and flexible to better cushion joints.

All of these nutrients work synergistically with the other ingredients in Agility Formula (vitamins E and C, boswellia serrata, alfalfa leaf extract, chondroitin sulfate, manganese and boron) to provide for the comprehensive joint needs of dog or cats, to help maintain the health of bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.

With no fillers or additives, Agility Formula has a delectable flavor they’ll love! Join thousands of satisfied customers, and help your companion animals lead a healthier and happier life with Agility Formula.

Grooming:

Golden Retrievers shed heavily once or twice per year. You will notice they also shed moderately on a continuous basis. You will need to give them a good brushing out with a slicker brush once or twice per week to help remove much of the dead hair before it falls onto you and your home belongings. Use the Life's Abundance Bath Fresh Mist to help keep the coat smelling fresh in between baths and to help untangle the hair as you brush.

Exercise:

Be prepared to provide your Golden Retriever plenty of daily exercise. They make great companions for bikers, runners, mountain climbers and just about any other kind of outdoor activity you participate in. They also enjoy hunting trips, field trips, canine sports such as agility, obedience and tracking.

If you are looking for a dog breed that wants nothing more than to please you and your family, the Golden Retriever is a good match. They are outgoing, loyal, easy to train and eager to please.

Health:

Golden Retrievers are in general a healthy breed. Responsible breeders will screen breeding stock for health conditions common to the breed.
