Why Should You Dress Your Dog?

Dog fashions can be fun! Your dog can look flirty, funky, flashy or glamorous. Never before in the history of our dog have there been so many fun choices to make. There are clothes and shoes, and an overwhelming choice of collars, leashes and dog carriers, as well as clothes made especially for holidays.

Dog fashions can also practical. If all you are interested in  keeping your dog warm on chilly days and nights, you can find the perfect sweater, jacket of fleece shirt. We as humans really share a common trait with our dogs. We both love attention! We enjoy dressing our dogs up in the latest of dog clothes, hats and jewelry because it is interactive. People stop and talk about it. The same is true when we humans dress up in the latest of fashion. It's fun. It opens up channels of communication with others and gives us attention, whether we admit it or not, we all crave.

For those of us with little toy dogs, the days of putting on a plain acrylic sweater are over. Top dog clothes designers are making trendy, fashionable dog clothes. There are dresses out there that match the same little dresses you might have worn as a kid. There is rain wear, real leather and faux fur, boots and hats, necklaces and hair jewelry by the dozens.

It is actually enough to make your head swim! If you are indecisive like I am, that is. This revolution in dog fashions is just as varied as human clothing. You can spend hundreds of dollars on an outfit or very little and still have your little dog looking fabulous. Dressing your dog is here to stay.

Clothes for Warmth:

If you and your little toy dog will go outside in Maine in the winter, it truly matters that your little guy is in a nice, warm coat. Sure your main objective here is to keep the little guy warm, but it is more fun if that coat is mink, or even faux fur. Wow! How cute can that be? Real cute! Even long-coated little dogs sometimes need a little help keeping warm. Small dogs do lose their body heat much faster and are prone to hypoglycemia. A fleece t-shirt inside is also great to help keep your little guys from losing too much body heat.

Clothes for Worried Dogs:

When you are a Teacup size dog and you only weigh 5 pounds, you will have lots to worry about if the larger size dogs are around. Dressing the little guys in clothes will actually relieve some of the tensions between them and their rivals: the bigger guys. It creates calming to wrap up your little guy in something warm and cozy like a fleece t-shirt or sweater for inside. It gives the little guys more confidence.

Dogs like attention. When you dress up your dog in a beautiful party dress, people pay them the attention they naturally crave. Your little dog will probably respond with lots of tail wagging and an increase in self confidence. Most dogs love to interact with people and clothes are very good conversation starters. Dress your dog up in something really, really pretty and unusual and have fun watching her/his reactions when people stop and tell him or her just how precious they look. People won't be able to resist smiling and petting your little dog. Dressing up your pet in beautiful dog fashions is definitely a way for the two of you to meet new people anywhere you decide to go.

Always feed your dog a high quality diet such as that offered through Life's Abundance.

Dogs and Appropriate Toys

Inspect your dog's toys often. If there are pieces bit off the toy, discard it. Usually small pieces of a toy or chew will pass through a dog's system, but they could end up causing an intestinal blockage instead.

Flimsy vinyl or plastic toys or balls with squeakers and bells in them usually don't hold up. Some dogs will just tear at the toy until they get the squeaker out. The squeakers and bells also pose a problem of your dog choking on them if he tries to swallow the objects.

Some dogs like to carry around stuffed toys in their mouth. Get stuffed toys made especially for dogs. Children's stuffed toys will usually have noses and eyes that can be easily chewed off.

Kong toys are made of heavy rubber and are very durable, which makes a nice choice for your dog to chew on without worry of him chewing off small pieces of the toy and choking. They can be packed with small dog biscuits or bits of cheese to encourage the dog to play with them. They can keep your dog busy for quite a while as he works to get out the treats.

I do not recommend rawhide for any dog at all. A safe alternative rawhide chews are Life's Abundance Porky Puffs Chews:

Porky Puffs

  • Irresistible flavor and chewing satisfaction
  • 100% pork snouts
  • No harsh preservatives or artificial flavors and colors
  • Made in the USA
Dogs can’t resist the rich aroma of our delicious pig snouts. Packed with high-quality protein, Porky Puffs chewable treats are non-greasy and contain no artificial preservatives or flavors. And with no artificial colors, you won’t have to worry about hard-to-remove stains in your carpet!
They are easily digestible and therefore a safe alternative to rawhide, which can cause choking, throat irritations and potentially dangerous intestinal blockages.
Since the digestive system is the first line of immune defense, treating your dog to a Porky Puff won’t put a strain on his or her health, like other highly-processed products on the market today. You’ll feel better providing a treat they’ll love, while helping to maintaining a healthy digestive system. And Porky Puffs are appropriate for dogs of all ages.
Give your sweet pup something to be truly thankful for – yummy Porky Puffs!
Made in the USA.

Stay away from rawhide. Avoid commercially made pig ears and calf hooves as well.  Once you have tried the Porky Puffs and see how your dogs love them, you will forget all about any other kind of pig ears, calf hooves or rawhide treats that actually can be dangerous to your dog if those small pieces get hung in their neck or digestive system. You will end up in the emergency vet clinic.

Never, never give your dog chicken bones or any other type of bone that might splinter. Other safe chews from Life's Abundance include:

Buffalo Bully Sticks

Buffalo Lungs

Buffalo Meat Strips

Grooming Matted Dog Coats

Brushing and combing out the coat of hair is the most laborious and time-consuming chore in dog grooming. A knowledge of some 'tricks of the trade? will help cut down on this labor time, especially so in cases of badly matted  coats. The longer the coat of your dog, the greater the potential for matting.

If your dog's coat is very badly matted and tangled there is no alternative but to strip the coat of your dog. Stripping the coat of your dog means to remove the entire coat with clippers fitted with a fine blade, right down to the skin. If the coat of your dog requires stripping, obviously, there is no need for brushing and combing.

Coat conditioner:

If your dog's coat is not so bad, does not require stripping and can be saved, but still bad enough to require considerable brushing and combing, you can saturate the dog's coat with an oil-based coat condition to loosen the knots and tangles and ease the brushing chore. Coat conditioners that contain an oil base are beneficial for both the coat and skin. Mink oil is probably about the best dog coat conditioner on the market and especially for a matted dog coat. There are other methods professional groomers and handlers use for dealing with matted dog coats. This becomes a matter of personal preference between you and your dog. I recommend using Life's Abundance Grooming products.

Universal brush:

The Universal brush is a German import and is convex-shaped with fairly long, hard, wire bristles. Its shape and density enable it to pull out the dead hairs of your dog's coat more efficiently than any other brush. Unfortunately, it will also pull out the live hairs of your dog's coat and therefore should never be used for a show coat.

Oster mat comb:

The Oster mat comb is a major product that cuts down on grooming time. The comb is specially designed to cut through knots and tangles and much less time is spent in brushing and combing.

The Oster mat comb is used in the following manner:

Grasp the mat comb firmly with thumb resting on the thumb rest and the other fingers around the wooden handle. Place the mat comb directly behind the mat with the teeth flat against the skin. Pull the mat comb forward towards you. If the dog's coat is heavily matted, try pulling the comb through the coat with short vertical strokes that should result in slicing the big mat into several smaller ones. Continue the process until you can comb through the coat without catching.

Use your soft wire slicker or Universal brush to brush out all the remaining small mats and comb through the coat once again, until the comb runs through the coat smoothly.

Brushes and combs:

The brush you use to brush your dog is most important. A soft wire slicker brush is a happy medium between the too-soft brushes used for show dogs and the too-harsh slicker brushes sold in most pet stores.

The Universal brush or a fairly large slicker brush with hard fibers is used in cases of badly matted coats. This type of brush is harsher than the normal slicker and may take our more hair than desired.
The comb of choice for general use consists of half fine and half coarse teeth and does not have a handle. The best of these types of combs were formerly manufactured in Belgium but American companies now make equally fine combs. The comb can be used for roughing out to finishing touches of your coat.

The mat comb is a companion to the Universal brush for coping with badly matted coats. The mat comb is heavier with wider-spaced teeth and is not to be confused with the Oster mat comb, which is a tool especially for dealing with very badly matted coats.

My Dog Chews a Lot, Mostly On Me!

Puppies who chew are normal. Chewing is a natural and necessary puppy behavior. Puppies at about four months of age are more prone to chewing because this is when they usually start teething. Other dogs that chew, especially when you are not at home, may be suffering from separation anxiety.

Some things you can do is try to teach your puppy not to chew inappropriate items. You can sit on the floor with him, casually place an object before him like a shoe, or a pencil (something he has chewed on inappropriately). As puppy approaches the object, give a firm "No," and replace the item with appropriate chew toy or nutritious chew treat such as Life's Abundance Buffalo Lungs:

Buffalo Lungs

  • Free-range, grass-fed buffalo
  • No additives or preservatives
  • Pure chewing satisfaction without digestive upset
  • Product of India

Dogs know what they want, even if their people don’t always understand why. And without question, they’ll do the happy dance for these flavorful and oh-so-satisfying chews.

Made from free-range, grass-fed buffalo, these wholesome dog treats:

• Supply a leaner alternative to beef
• Are suitable for dogs with food sensitivities
• Contain no additives or preservatives
• Provide a rewarding chewing experience

Reward your pup with a bag of tasty doggy delights today!

When puppy takes the appropriate chew toy, or chew treat praise him. You might even offer him a treat to try and reinforce the appropriate behavior and also.....that chewing on treats is alright too. Offer puppy Life's Abundance Antioxidant Health Bars:

Antioxidant Health Bars

  • Helps maintain a healthy immune system
  • Powerful antioxidant system with vitamins C, E and beta-carotene
  • No artificial preservatives or colors
  • Made with care in a USA bakery
Millions of Americans eat health bars every day. They are a convenient and tasty way to supplement the diet with good nutrition. And the perfect health snack for your furry friend.

Packed with premium ingredients, Antioxidant Health Bars are a nutritious way to reward your sweet pup and boost his or her health. Featuring the great taste of apples, peanut butter and honey, dogs just can’t resist these delicious bars, which also include oatmeal, brown rice, ground flaxseed, dates, rolled oats, flaxseed oil, eggs, cranberries and carrots. Since antioxidants are so important to maintaining a healthy immune system, we’ve added a hefty helping of vitamin E, vitamin C and beta-carotene.

And the amounts of these important nutrients are guaranteed on the label, so you know exactly how much nutrition your dog is receiving on a daily basis.

In a market overwhelmed by nutritionally inadequate dog treats, Antioxidant Health Bars are the healthy alternative for canines.

Have a variety of chew toys and chew treats on hand. Give him no more than 3 or 4 chew toys at a time. Rotate the chew toys or treats to provide variety and to help stimulate interest. Puppies can be compared to children who enjoy a new toy or returning to a toy they have not played with in a while.

Keep plenty of Bitter Apple Spray on hand and use it on spots where you find puppy has chewed or is about to chew. This has been the absolute best trick I have ever found in keeping puppies/dogs away from objects I don't want them chewing on
.
My Puppy Bites my Hands When we Play!

If you have ever watched puppies playing together or moms playing with their puppies, you will notice how they nip and bite each other sometimes to the point of what sounds like a blood curling scream.....Very Normal Behavior, however. Not so pleasant though when puppy plays with you and attempts the same kind of antics.

You will need to teach puppy not to play biting games with you. Try screaming: "Ouch!" Walk away from her for several minutes. You don't want to give her attention for this behavior. You want to plainly tell her "THAT HURTS," and I do not like it!!! If she just barely touches your skin with a little nip, just gently say "No."

Try feeding her treats straight from your hand and do not throw them on the floor or leave them out for her to nibble on. Sort of like, puppies/dogs will not bite the hands that feed them, most usually, unless they have some kind of severe psychological disorder. You can also grab her mouth, hold it together firmly and say "NO BITE."

The Chihuahua Becomes Popular

When Xavier Cugat, the rumba king, appeared with his Chihuahuas in movies and on television in the late 1930s and 1940s the Chihuahua breed received great exposure and became quite popular.

Chihuahuapelolungosweetindeed

Because of the Chihuahua's exposure in movies and television, the Chihuahua began one of the most meteoric rises in numbers of any breed in American Kennel Club history. The Chihuahua reached its peak in 1964 and became the third most popular breed in the United States. About a century after its discovery, the Chihuahua became one of the most recognizable breeds. The AKC now registered an average of 40,000 Chihuahuas each year. Both long and short haired Chihuahuas are popular as lap dogs around the world.

For many people Chihuahua is the only dog for them. However, Chihuahuas are not for everyone. Chihuahuas can be quite challenging.

Size of the Chihuahua

For many people the size of a dog is most important. The Chihuahua's small size makes it convenient for matters such as space, food bills, grooming and exercise. However, small dogs don't make effective protection dogs, they run underfoot and people can easily trip over them. They can be easily injured by falling objects, larger dogs, and wild children. They are more susceptible to cold weather, missed meals and certain health problems. They are, however, extra cute dressed in t-shirts, coats, dresses, shirts and just about any kind of clothing on the dog market today.

Chihuahuas are not a good choice for homes filled with children or heavy-footed adults. Chihuahuas cannot live outdoors. They cannot withstand cold weather and need a lot of companionship with humans. Even long coated Chihuahuas cannot cope with cold weather.

Temperament of the Chihuahua

Chihuahuas are intelligent, willing to please and make trustworthy companions. They are one-family or one-person dogs. They can become devoted to the point of becoming clingy. They are definitely lap dogs. The Chihuahua can be bold and quick witted. Watch out for intruder's ankles who trespass with the Chihuahua's approval. Expose your Chihuahua to visitors at an early age so they will learn to accept them graciously. Chihuahuas are usually barkers. They usually bond well with other Chihuahua housemates. They are among the most devoted of all dogs.

They bond deeply with their family forming a lifelong commitment to their people. It can be particularly devastating to a Chihuahua to be uprooted from loved ones. Do not get a Chihuahua unless you plan on keeping him for a lifetime.

What Kind of Dog Clothes Should You Choose?

Dress up your little dog in fabulous pet fashions. The two of you will meet new people. It would be hard for others to notice how cute your little guy is in that Hawaiian shirt as you stroll along your usual walking paths. He will definitely enjoy all the attention and you may find yourself making new friends. Most dogs like to interact with people. Dog fashions are a wonderful conversation starter for the both of you.

Here are few tips on teaching your little dog to accept putting on a sweater for extra warmth in public:

1. Practice getting clothes on and off at home. Give your dog treats and make dressing your dog a very happy time for the both of you. Use Life's Abundance Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats:

Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats

2. Take your time when dressing your dog.
3. Select clothes that are easy to get on and off. Look for clothes with Velcro closings or snaps and generous sized arm holes. Select your dog's clothes for comfort as well as for style.

Once your dog is accustomed to getting clothes on and off at home, you should not have any problem pulling out a sweater if a sudden chilly wind blows up somewhere and you want your dog to stay warm.

When choosing your dog's clothes take his personality into account. Fashion for dogs is like fashion for humans, it is all about a personal style.

It is fairly easy to put a pink bow and a dress with matching lace on a little girl dog, but what about those 'males.? What kind of personality does your little boy have? Is he the Protector type? Or a playboy type of guy who thinks himself the coolest dude in town? Whatever his personality, match up his clothes to create a style that matches his personality. For example, if he is an Alpha Male and the little girl dogs think he is so very charming, he most likely can wear about anything from a fun T-shirt to a classy looking hat. Just don't ever put anything pink on him.

Do you have a little girl dog that is definitely a Princess Dress her up in anything that is pink. She never gets dirty even when she romps and plays with the tom-boys of the group. I have a Shih Tzu named Ginger and every time I groom her hair, put ribbons and topknots in her hair, she sits quietly on the steps of the porch as if she does not want to mess up herself. The rest of the time, she runs around squawking like a chicken  at those times I nickname her Rooster. Every dog has its very own unique personality. Have fun with your dog clothes and dress your dogs up according to their personalities.

Talking to Your Dog

First you want to ask yourself, why did you purchase a dog? I have seen people with dogs, even who chain the dog to a backyard tree and visit the dog only to provide water and food. I think to myself, that has to be a very lonely life for that dog. I also know those owners are missing out on a lot of the enjoyment of owning a dog. If you never  communicate with your dog or you never try to communicate with your dog, you truly do not need to purchase one.

Talking to your dog is not necessarily communicating with them. We need to learn how our dog understands what we say to them and we need to understand what the dog says back to us. When you communicate effectively with your dog you will find you possess more influence over your dog's behavior without having to resort to punishment of any sort.

Our dogs are so much a part of our human community and separated from their lives in the wild, they no longer are able to fend for themselves. They provide us with beauty, loyalty and a connection with nature. We have to provide them with food and care. We are also responsible for providing mental stimulation and social graces needed to live well in our human world.

If we will try to understand our dogs and develop true communication with them, the understanding will open up new ways of looking at this world. I have gained a virtue since owning a dog. That virtue is "patience." How my dogs have taught me patience is actually a mystery to me that I cannot put into words at this time. I just know I have greater patience with all aspects of my life since living with a dog.

I believe dogs have emotions much like humans. I witness these emotions more at times of  mothers raising puppies. I have seen them express great joy and times of grief. I have seen them wipe their eyes with their paws as if to wipe the tears away at the loss of one of their babies.

For this reason, there is no researcher that could ever convince me shih tzu at least do not have emotions, and these emotions are much like humans. Because of these times of their emotion expressions, we have a stronger bond to each other and both our lives have been enriched.

We need to pay close attention to what our dogs are saying to us. In the case with a grieving mother, it is my responsibility then to try and comfort her during a difficult time. We owe our pets much more than the material things of life such as food, water, toys, soft beds to sleep in, etc. We need to learn how to effectively communicate with them.

Always feed your dogs high quality dog products such as those offered through Life's Abundance.
