The Cheerful Cocker Spaniel is an Extremely Popular Dog Breed

The Cocker Spaniel is one of the most popular breeds. They are a sturdy dog with a compact body and silky, flat or wavy coat. His overwhelming popularity may be due in part to  his "merry" personality. He is a well-balanced dog capable of considerable speed and great endurance. The Cocker Spaniel can be black, black with tan points, parti-colored or any solid color other than black. (source: AKC)

Notice the long ears. These long ears help to hold in moisture which can lead to severe ear problems. You especially want to keep the ears of a Cocker Spaniel clean. You do not want to end up with a condition as pictured below:

Ear infection in cocker spaniel

I highly recommend keeping the Cocker's ear clean with Life's Abundance ear cleaner to help avoid severe ear infections such as is in the above photo. Life's Abundance ear cleaner is not a cure, it is an aid to help "prevent" severe ear infections.

Small Dogs are Dogs of Charm

Small dogs have charm and personality. Over the course of time more and more new breeds have been created by selectively breeding dogs with a certain external appearance and certain character traits.

Small dog breeds came into our existence for various reasons. Some small dogs, like the dachshunds and Yorkshire terriers performed specific tasks by hunters. Other small dogs like the Pekingese, Shih Tzu and Maltese were created especially as companions for the well-to-do and the noble. Every land in the world has produced its own breed of small dogs. These small dogs as a result of trade became known in countries all over the world.

The Chihuahua comes from Mexico. The Pekingese and Shih Tzu originated in Tibet and China. Many types of terriers were bred in the Scottish Highlands. It is possible that the ancestors of the petit chien lion and of the poodle were from ancient Greece. The Chinese crested hairless dog is a descendant of the Aztec kingdom and China.

In earlier times to own an expensive purebred dog such as the Pekingese or the Shih Tzu was reserved only for the wealthy and privileged individuals. The situation changed, however, with the French Revolution when privilege based on social class was called into question. The middle class began to own expensive pedigreed dogs that were easily distinguished from a mutt. The popularity of the purebred dogs began to soar.

Breed standards in every breed describe from head to toe, height, weight, general appearance and character traits. A breed standard specifies how the ideal representative of each breed should look. Nature does not permit complete uniformity to these breed standards set by people. A standard only represents a goal to which breeders are suppose to come as close as possible of creating.

Unfortunately, these rigid standards call for things that have created unnecessary health problems and unnatural characteristics for a dog. For example, noses that have been bred to be excessively short hindering the dog's breathing and can cause pinched nostrils, which can lead to heart problems.

Some breed standards call for legs so short that the dogs can no longer walk normally. It is the goal of responsible dog clubs and associations to work against excesses of this kind.

Small dogs differ from large dogs only in terms of their size. A small dog does not need to be overly protected. It is untrue that small dogs are more susceptible to disease just because they are small. On the contrary, small dog's life expectancy is even higher than larger dogs.

One of the added enjoyments of the smaller dogs is dressing them up in cute tiny dog clothes and accessories. Larger dogs can be dressed up as well, but there is just something extra sweet and cute about the teacup dog clothes, to see a cute little Yorkie in dog clothes is eye opening, and the Chihuahua dog clothes sometimes are the cutest of all.

All dogs, large and small benefit from skin and coat supplements.

    Skin and Coat Supplements
Omega-3 fatty acids from flaxseed & fish oil
  • A total of seven B vitamins
  • Vitamins E, C & zinc
  • Irresistibly tasty, chewable tablets

  • How would you rate your companion animal’s skin and coat health? Does your pet have …
    • Dry, flaky skin or a dull, brittle coat
    • Oily, foul smelling skin or a matted coat
    • Thin coat, excessive hair loss or red, blotchy skin
    • Excessive scratching (especially, seasonally)
Keeping your companion animal’s skin healthy and coat shiny can prove very challenging. There’s more to skin-and-coat health than regular shampooing and daily brushing.

Even though the skin is the body’s largest organ, it takes a backseat to other organs when it comes to nutrition. In fact, the nutrients eaten by your pet go directly to the other vital organs first (such as the brain, heart, lungs and liver); as a consequence, the skin often suffers. Even if you are already feeding your companion animal a high-quality, nutritionally dense food, sometimes it’s just not enough to ensure skin and coat health. In fact, problems relating to the skin and coat are much more common than you might think as they account for a significant percentage of trips to the vet.

Skin & Coat Formula Can Help!

A comprehensive nutritional supplement, Skin & Coat Formula for Dogs and Cats addresses skin and coat health in a holistic way. Unlike ordinary skin and coat supplements that contain fatty acids and a few other ingredients, this formula supplies a whole host of additional nutrients that work together to address the complex factors that play a role in supporting skin and coat health. The nutrients featured in this formula can yield several health-promoting benefits. Here are just some of the highlights of how this supplement works …
    • In addition to skin-nourishing omega-3 fatty acids, this formula contains vitamin E and zinc, which help increase the effectiveness of the fatty acids.
    • The vitamin A in this formula helps cells to grow and supports the naturally-occurring layer of oil on the skin, helping to keep it healthy and supple.
    • This formula also contains vitamin C, which supports healthy collagen development.
    • And to top it off, our new and improved Skin & Coat now contains seven different B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, d-pantothenic acid, niacin, pyridoxine, B12 and biotin), all of which work with the other nutrients in this formula to aid in the many complex chemical reactions required for healthy skin and coat.
If your companion animal’s skin or coat is less than perfect, try a bottle of  Skin & Coat Formula with a comprehensive line-up of nutrients that work together to help support healthy skin and a shiny coat.

Create an Emotional Bond During Training Sessions with Your Dog

I have read and continue to read books on training. At this point, I feel like whichever method (without cruelty, of course) you use that works for your dog is the type of training to stick with. Not every method works for every dog. We just all have to continue to read and research and find what works best for our unique situations. As we learn what works for our dog and we practice the lessons with the dog consistently, we create a much needed emotional bond with them as well that is just as valuable as the actual behavior we want our dog to learn. Most companion dogs want nothing more than to please and hang out with their human friends.

In this article I would like to speak about teaching your dog what "sit" actually means. Try it. If it works for you, then you have solved a problem for yourself. I believe you can use this same method with any behavior you want your dog to learn.

You want to teach your dog to "sit" on cue. You will need to have a bowlful or pocket full of small treats your dog just loves. You can use a clicker if you desire. You will need lots of time and patience. I suggest you feed a nutritious training treat such as is offered through Life Abundance. The Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats are an excellent choice, however, try all the flavors to find which treat your dog likes best and use that one during training.

    Tasty Rewards Training Treats
    Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats

    • Positive reinforcement has never tasted so good
    • Perfectly sized for carrying in your pocket
    • Gluten free, no artificial preservatives, colors or flavors
    • Made in USA with Chicken and lamb from New Zealand
Good behavior should be rewarded, but often training treats are empty-calorie treats with no nutritive value and include undesirable ingredients. At Life's Abundance, we strongly believe that you should only feed treats that can help to support overall health.

Tasty Rewards are wholesome nutritional treats made from New Zealand-raised chicken and lamb.
They’re loaded with proteins, minerals, vitamins and essential fatty acids. And, like all of our foods, supplements and treats, you’ll find no added artificial preservatives or colors..
With Tasty Rewards Nutritional Treats, discipline can be delicious!

First hold the delicious treat in front of your dog's nose. Move the treat slowly back over the top of the dog's head. As the dog moves up to follow the treat, her rump will begin to move down. And....wa-la......your dog is sitting without you laying a hand on her.

As soon as your dog's rump is on the ground, use your clicker and click, or say your "command" word or "phrase" you want the dog to associate with this behavior (teaching your dog what "sit" actually means). Now give the treat. Start playing with your dog again to get her out of the sitting position.

Now do the exercise again. If your dog jumps up to get the treat, you are holding it too high. You don't want the dog to think she is suppose to "jump" to get the treat. Use a word or phrase you have chosen to use consistently for behavior that is not reward-worthy if the dog jumps up for the treat (decide upon this word and use it consistently with all your training sessions for behaviors that do not deserve a treat). You want the dog to learn to "sit" for her treat.

When the dog folds into a sit as soon as you hold your hand out, add the word you want the dog to connect with this action (say "sit" or whatever keyword/command you have chosen), hold your hand out in the same motion as before, but DO NOT give a treat. Click or say your keyword when the dog sits. Now come forth with the treat (when the dog is in the sitting position).

The dog will appreciate the time you spend with he or she. This is "attention" the dog absolutely adores from its human friends. You have not only taught the dog a valuable lesson for her and yourself, but you have created an extra emotional bond as well.

    Common Parasites in Dogs

Some common parasites affecting dogs in general are: Chiggers, coccidiosis, fleas, flies, giardia, heartworm, hookworms, lice and mange.

Cara de quem caiu do caminhão... (cropped)

There are three basic forms of parasitism: Internal organs, blood and skin. The geographical region in which you live will determine which parasites can affect your dog.

Worms are a common parasitic infestation and one cause of diarrhea. The presence of diarrhea, however, does not mean a definitive diagnosis of "worms." Definite diagnosis is made by a veterinarian, under microscopic examination, of a fresh fecal or blood sample. Only a veterinarian who has made the determination of the type of parasitic infestation should prescribe medications to treat the infestation.

Chiggers affect man and dogs and are prevalent in southern U.S. Areas. Eradication if chiggers is generally best achieved by manual removal. Prevention is somewhat effective if you will limit your dog to manicured grass.

Coccidiosis cause an enteritis condition of cats and dogs. Coccidiosis is most common in puppies and kittens. Symptoms are mild to severe bloody diarrhea, lethargy and weakness from dehabilitation of nutrients caused by the diarrhea, anorexia and death if not treated. Coccidiosis is seldom fatal when treated with the proper medication by the veterinarian who diagnoses the parasite in a timely manner. Coccidiosis is always present among canines. Some canines become carriers and have no symptoms themselves. Excessive stress can cause symptom producing coccidia in very young puppies and kittens that can become life threatening if not treated properly.

Fleas are most common to dogs of any breed. Fleas constantly bite and can produce allergic reactions in some dogs. A sensitive dog will scratch and chew to relieve the itch, only to produce a "hotspot" or some other type of skin dermatitis which can lead to a secondary infection.. Fleas can also act as temporary hosts in tapeworms' life cycles. A dog can acquire a tapeworm as it chews and ingest the fleas. Tapeworms can be effectively treated by your vet. The best protocol is to avoid fleas altogether. Flea control is comparatively easy through a wide selectin of products including soaps, shampoos, sprays, powders, dips, natural and herbal treatments.

Giardia is usually found around remote bodies of water. It can occur in dogs of any age and can be transferred to humans. Onset is usually sudden. Symptoms are diarrhea, lethargy, lack of appetite and weight loss. Diagnosis is made by fecal microscopic examination. Resolution is successful provided treatment is initiated early.

Heartworm occurs in two forms throughout the lower forty-eight states. One is harmless, the other if left untreated is deadly. The heartworm is carried by mosquito bites. Diagnosis is made through a blood test. Regular prophylactic treatment is available and highly recommended.

Hookworms are found primarily in the southern portions of the United States. Infection may also be transferred to puppies from the mother's milk. For this reason, all newborn puppies need to be regularly dewormed starting at 2 weeks of age up until at least 12 weeks of age following the recommendations and schedule of your own personal vet. There are a variety of dewormers available that completely eradicate the problem of hookworms.

Mange occurs in one of two forms: Demodex or Sarcoptes. Positive diagnosis can be made only by a veterinarian under microscopic examination of skin samples taken from an affected area. If treated early, mange can be completely cured. Treatment is usually by therapeutic shampoo or dips once a week for several weeks. Prevention of the mite infestations that can cause Sarcoptes mange is recommended. Ask your vet for appropriate mange mite medication to prevent the disease. The same mites that cause mange in dogs can cause ear mites and ear infections.

In addition to keeping your dog free from parasites, a regular schedule of ear cleaning is also ideal to help keep ear infections at a minimum. Use Life's Abundance Ear Cleaner for best results:

    Bottle Feeding Orphan Puppies

Nursing bottles for orphaned puppies can be obtained through the veterinarian, pet supplier, wholesale catalogs or the internet. You should purchase several nipple styles to see which works best for you and your dog.

    ACD Silverbarn's Ronja x

Puppies can become colicky just like human newborn babies. Be careful about allowing a puppy to ingest air when either tube or bottle feeding. Always turn the bottle and nipple end down, before offering it to the puppy. All the air in the bottle will rise to the solid end. When puppy is nursing freely bubbles rise in the bottle. The bubble flow should be fairly rapid, small and uniform in size, rising in even response to the puppy's nursing. If the bubbles are large the puppy may also be ingesting air. Check the nipple cap.

Occasionally remove the bottle from the puppy's mouth to allow a return passage of air back into the bottle. A return passage of air occurs either through turning the bottle upright or by momentarily loosening the cap. Do not abruptly pull the bottle from the puppy's mouth. Place a finger in the corner of the puppy's lip to break the nursing hold.

Some puppies may instinctively resist the unnatural feel of a manufactured nipple.

    1. If the dam is available, rub the bottle and nipple and a towel over her mammaries.
    2. Drape this towel across your stomach and lap.
    3. Hold the puppy on your lap against your abdomen.
    4. Express a small amount of formula from the bottle and wipe it over the nipple.
    5. As you introduce the bottle's nipple to the puppy's mouth, move your legs slightly, jiggling your lap.
    6. Also jiggle the bottle up and down in the puppy's mouth using tiny motions. The movements re-create the dam's breathing and puppy's nursing position on the dam that should cause the puppy to instinctively and reflexively latch onto the nipple.
    7. Have lots of patience.

You will need to burp the bottle fed puppy after each feeding. Do not allow the puppy to nurse the bottle dry to avoid a colicky baby. You can burp your puppy the same as you would a newborn human baby on your shoulder with gentle pats and rubs between the shoulder blades.

When you wean your puppy start them out on softened Life's Abundance dog food for puppies (the appropriate size formula of either small/medium or large breed).

Also, once your puppies turn 12 weeks old, start cleaning their ears with Life's Abundance Ear cleaner to help keep down ear infections that can be costly to treat at your vet's office.

    Stimulating Puppies to Life

Some puppies will be active the minute the sac is broke, others will seem lifeless and you will think for sure they are dead. I have rubbed and rubbed on lifeless puppies and then almost give up only suddenly to realize they were starting to move and respond a little bit, so I kept on stimulating them to come more and more to life. The worse I ever had to act like that was my Smokey. He was the only puppy born to me that was this beautiful steel grey color, which now I have learned is a "true blue." He has a blue nose and the light eyes. I almost gave up on him, it took so long for him to finally come to life. He is a big boy now and has not had a problem since, except for a slight sinus infection as a young puppy unrelated to his initial slow start to breathe on his own.

    Chihuahua puppy 001

I use just a plain dry wash cloth and briskly rub the puppy all over, tumbling and rubbing in all directions until it will finally yell. I also take a small baby ear syringe and place it in the puppy's mouth to suck out any fluid or mucus. This helps to stimulate the puppy to breathe on its own as well. The nostrils need to be free of fluid as well.

Once the puppy is dry and breathing I hold it to the mom to see if she will sniff the puppy. If she does and starts to lick the puppy, this is nature's way of stimulating the puppy to life and making it breathe better. Sometimes mothers are so distracted by the whelping or tired or probably just a little frightened, they don't want anything to do with the puppies at this point. If that is the case, the doggie midwife will have to continue rubbing and stimulating the puppy. If she does start to lick the puppy and accept it, the puppy will be fine to lie with mom for awhile until the next one arrives. Try to keep the bedding dry and warm and the puppy as warm as possible during this time.

The above "human/doggie midwife" procedure is only done if the mother does not do as her instincts should allow her to do with newborn puppies. Most mothers will do all the stimulating. This procedure is only for those few times mom does not do her job.

Puppies are born unable to urinate or have bowel movements unless stimulated by the mother's tongue. If the mother does not do this, you will have to do it with a piece of cotton or gauze that has been softened with a little baby oil. If you ever hand raise a litter of puppies this is important to know. It has to be done, and is not difficult. You just rub the anus of the puppy with the moistened cotton ball until the puppy defecates, and then do the same for urination until they urinate. It will be tiny little drops.

Once you notice the mother about to deliver another puppy, you should remove this one and put it in the warmed puppy box you have kept next to the whelping box. Sometimes mothers will really put up a fuss about me taking their new whelps and putting them in a puppy box, but I have to, and I insist regardless of what a fit she throws about it.

Puppies need to be warmed up after birth and kept warm. This is impossible when left in the whelping box with the mom delivering other puppies and the fluids running all over the place and back onto the puppies already delivered. They definitely will get chilled and you do not want this to happen.

Once whelping is over and it is time to feed your matron, feed her a messy, wet canned food for a few days, then spread the canned food over her dry meals for extra pampering. Use Life's Abundance Pork and Venison Grain Free or any of the canned formulas your matron prefers:
