Other names for the Caucasian Ovcharka dog include Caucasian Owtcharka,
Caucasian Sheep dog, Caucasian Shepherd, Kawkasky Owtscharka and
Kaukasische Schaferhund. His main job has been a livestock guarding dog
of greater than average size and power. He possesses a robust
constitution and exhibits an inherent distrust of strangers.
This dog is also popular in Armenia and Azerbaijan. It is extremely popular in Georgia of the United States. Georgia has always been the principal region for Caucasian shepherd dogs. As you can see from the above photo the Caucasian Ovcharka dogs are strongly boned and muscular. They are said to be even tempered. Mountain dog types have a heavier coat and are more muscular built. Weight for a male is common at 110 pounds. Weight for females is less topping out at about 99 pounds. Height for a male is about 27 inches, for a female it is about 26 to 28 inches.
This dog is generally healthy and has a long life span of about 10 to 12 years. Some dogs may have health issues including hip dysplasia, obesity and occasional heart problems. The majority of them are healthy if taken care of properly. Feed him properly from the beginning and you have won half the battle toward serious problems.
The Caucasian Ovcharka dogs are intelligent, however, they can exhibit a stubborn streak and refuse to listen. They also can be fairly aggressive towards people they do not know and with incorrect handling this condition can become problematic. Of course, with proper training, the dog is able to overcome aggressiveness.
Exercise and play time are crucial for this dog's life to help prevent obesity as well as problem behaviors. They will require specific and detailed training from puppies. An expert should train the dog between the ages of 7 to 8 months. Early puppy training should be standard obedience classes with light guidance. They do not tolerate other dogs very well and have been known to get out of control easily.
He is an excellent herder if trained properly. He is capable of herding different types of livestock and defending them if the situation arises. It is most important to expose the dog to extensive amounts of socialization to teach he or she that not all humans are enemies starting from a young age.
