  • Largest of All Terriers Airedales stand about 23 inches tall and weigh between 50–70 pounds, making them the biggest terrier breed. Their size and versatility earned them the nickname “The King of Terriers”.

  • Born Rat Hunters Originally bred in the Aire River Valley of England, Airedales were used to hunt large rats. They even competed in rat-hunting contests, where ferrets flushed rats from burrows and Airedales chased them into rivers.

  • Military Heroes During World War I, Airedales served as sentries, couriers, and rescue dogs. One heroic Airedale named Jack delivered a crucial message despite being mortally wounded and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross.

  • Presidential Pets Three successive U.S. presidents—Woodrow Wilson, Warren Harding, and Calvin Coolidge—owned Airedale Terriers. Their dogs were named Davie, Laddie Boy, and Laddie Buck (later renamed Paul Pry).
