The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog (GSMD) is a powerful, affectionate, and striking breed that blends rugged working ability with a gentle family-friendly nature. Known as the “Swissy,” this breed is one of the oldest and largest of the four Swiss mountain dogs.

🏔️ Breed Origins & History

  • Origin: Swiss Alps

  • Purpose: Originally bred as a draft and drover dog—used to pull carts, herd livestock, and guard farms

  • Nickname: “The Poor Man’s Horse” due to its strength and utility

  • Revival: Nearly extinct by the late 1800s, but rediscovered and revitalized in the early 1900s thanks to Swiss dog expert Albert Heim
